The sleep range linked to the lowest dementia risk in a large 2026 review is 7–8 hours a night. Compared with that group, people sleeping under 7 hours had an 18% higher relative risk of developing dementia. People sleeping over 8 hours had a 28% higher relative risk. These are associations from observational studies. They don’t show that sleep length causes dementia, and they don’t show that changing your sleep would prevent it.
Where the 7–8 hour figure comes from
Oye-Somefun and colleagues published “The Relationships between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep, and dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies” in PLOS ONE on April 8, 2026. The review pooled prospective cohort studies of community-dwelling adults aged 35 and older who were followed for incident dementia. The authors searched five databases from 1946 through August 2025 and used random-effects meta-analysis.

The 7–8 hour range is not a threshold the authors derived from the data. It is the reference category: the group every other group was compared against. That matters, because the finding is “people outside this range had higher relative risk,” not “scientists calculated that 7.5 hours is ideal for everyone.”
The sleep results
| Nightly sleep | Pooled relative risk (95% CI) | Heterogeneity (I²) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 7 hours | 1.18 (1.09–1.28) | 41.1%, moderate |
| 7–8 hours (reference) | 1.00 | not applicable |
| Over 8 hours | 1.28 (1.15–1.43) | 66.9%, substantial |
The sleep analysis covered 17 studies and 1,344,170 participants, and all 17 examined both short and long sleep. Heterogeneity measures how much the individual studies disagreed. Results differed more across studies for long sleep than for short sleep, so the 1.28 figure is the less settled of the two.

What a relative risk does and doesn’t tell you
- A relative risk of 1.18 means the rate of dementia was 18% higher in short sleepers than in the reference group. It is not 18 percentage points.
- It is not your personal probability. Age, genetics, cardiovascular health and many other factors dominate individual risk, and the figure says nothing about absolute chances.
- It is an average across many cohorts with different definitions, populations and follow-up lengths.
Why this doesn’t prove sleep causes dementia
The evidence is observational. Several limits apply:
- Direction is unclear. Early, undiagnosed brain changes can disturb sleep or lengthen it years before a diagnosis. Long sleep in particular may be a marker of underlying health changes rather than a cause, as secondary coverage in ScienceAlert (April 26, 2026) also noted.
- Study quality is mixed. The authors rated most sleep studies at moderate risk of bias.
- Sleep was measured at a point in time. The authors call for longer follow-up and research that tracks how behaviours change over time, and for more cohorts of middle-aged adults.
- Open questions remain about dose-response, whether changing sleep changes dementia risk, and whether the associations hold independent of pre-existing health problems.
The paper’s own wording is cautious: regular physical activity, less sedentary time and appropriate nightly sleep (7–8 h) “may be associated with reduced risk of dementia and are potentially modifiable factors in the prevention or delay of dementia.”

Activity and sitting: the same paper, weaker or different evidence
The review also looked at movement behaviours, and the headline numbers shouldn’t be given equal weight.

The sleep evidence base is far larger than the sitting one, but it is smaller than the activity one, and each has its own weaknesses.

What to take from it
- If you usually sleep 7–8 hours, the study gives no reason to change anything.
- If you regularly sleep well under 7 hours, treat it as a general health question worth raising with a clinician, particularly if poor sleep is persistent or involves snoring, breathing pauses or insomnia. The study doesn’t show that adding sleep will lower dementia risk.
- If you sleep much more than 8 hours, especially if that is new, the association may reflect an underlying condition. It is not evidence that sleeping less is protective.
- Don’t treat the range as a personal prescription. The authors’ conclusion is that these behaviours are potentially modifiable factors, and that future work must show whether changing them alters dementia incidence.
Co-author Parmis Mirzadeh, quoted in York University’s coverage (YFile, April 22, 2026), described the aim as understanding “how daily habits like physical activity, sedentary time and sleep collectively shape brain health over time.” The study doesn’t test or recommend sleep trackers, supplements or other products as ways to cut dementia risk.
