NVIDIA raised the US price of the Shield TV Pro to $299 on October 2, 2026—about $100, or 50%, above its reported $199.99 launch price in 2019. NVIDIA attributes the increase to higher component costs, including memory. That explanation is plausible as a company statement, but it is not a detailed cost breakdown. The price is especially hard to accept for seven-year-old hardware, even though the Pro still offers features many basic streaming devices do not.
What changed in the Shield TV Pro’s price?
Ars Technica reports that the new US price took effect October 2, 2026. NVIDIA’s current US product page also lists the Shield TV Pro at $299. The reported $199.99 launch price makes the nominal increase about $100, or roughly 50%; this is a list-price comparison, not an inflation-adjusted one. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement listed the Pro at $199.
NVIDIA spokesperson’s explanation, quoted by Ars Technica on October 2, 2026, was: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” That identifies the company’s stated reason, but it does not reveal the Shield’s bill of materials, how much of its cost is memory, or how much of the retail increase reflects costs rather than other pricing decisions.
Why the price feels especially hard to justify
The Shield TV Pro is built around NVIDIA’s Tegra X1+ and has 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. NVIDIA’s official specifications also list Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, AI upscaling to 4K at up to 60 frames per second, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b, two USB 3.0 ports, Android 11 with Android TV, and GeForce NOW support. Those features give the device a more specialized role than a basic streaming stick, but they do not change its age: the Pro was introduced in 2019.

There is an uncomfortable irony in an AI-focused company pointing to memory costs as it raises the price of a consumer device. NVIDIA is a key player in AI computing, and its 2019 Shield announcement highlighted AI-powered upscaling. That makes the broader tension between demand for AI infrastructure and consumer hardware costs fair to question. But the available reporting does not quantify NVIDIA’s contribution to memory-market prices or prove that its data-center business caused this particular increase. Saying NVIDIA’s AI business caused the Shield price rise would go beyond what the evidence establishes.
Does the Shield TV Pro still earn a place at $299?
That depends on whether you will use its particular strengths. The official specifications include USB storage expansion and Plex Media Server functions, alongside the video features and GeForce NOW support. A buyer who wants a compact device for ordinary app-based streaming may not need those capabilities; someone who values local storage expansion, media-server use, or NVIDIA’s gaming ecosystem may weigh them differently. These are listed product features, not independent test results.

At $299, the Pro is a difficult recommendation as a default streaming-device purchase. Its feature set can still make sense for a buyer with a specific use case, but the price increase makes it more important to compare what you will actually use rather than assuming that a higher price means a broadly better streaming experience.
What about the cheaper base Shield TV?
October reports say NVIDIA ended production of the base Shield TV model, so it is no longer a dependable current alternative. Earlier, in July, NVIDIA said the base device was largely out of stock because of demand and that it had no update on future availability; that was not an announcement that production had ended. The distinction matters: limited stock at that point did not establish discontinuation, while the October reporting does.

What alternatives should you compare?
Android Authority points to the Google TV Streamer and Walmart Onn 4K Pro as alternatives to consider. The available reporting does not establish their current prices or provide a verified feature-by-feature comparison, so treat them as candidates to check rather than direct equivalents. Before choosing, compare:
- Current price and availability: check what each device costs where you live today.
- Video and audio formats: confirm support for the formats your television and sound system use.
- Software and apps: make sure the platform has the apps and support you want.
- Storage and media use: check whether USB expansion or Plex Media Server features matter to your setup.
- Gaming: decide whether GeForce NOW support is a genuine requirement or an unused extra.
The Shield’s listed features are documented by NVIDIA’s product specifications. The alternatives are identified in Android Authority’s coverage; compare their current specifications and prices directly before buying.
