The meme behind A Summer in Northeast China is usually called “Once Upon a Time in Dongbei,” or 东北往事 / 东百往事. It began with a 2016 Kuaishou feud between livestream personalities known as Brother Hu and Captain Shamate. Viewers treated the loud confrontations as performances, clipped and reposted them, and built a shared catalogue of quotations and “classic” moments on Bilibili.
In 2023, creator Zhuangbuchun turned that archive into a free Steam visual novel. The game keeps recognizable names, looks, attitudes and callbacks, but fictionalizes the cast, gender-swaps the source roles, and puts them into a more linear story about Xiaoliang and her companions. Understanding the game therefore requires seeing both halves of the journey: a Northeastern internet performance that became participatory folklore, and an adaptation that gives that folklore a plotted, character-driven form.

What “Once Upon a Time in Dongbei” refers to
“Once Upon a Time in Dongbei” is an English rendering of the Chinese meme labels 东北往事 and 东百往事. The names suggest a single historical saga, but the source was not a verified chronicle. It was a stream of online confrontations, boasts, arguments and comic set pieces associated with Brother Hu and Captain Shamate.
The material spread because it was unusually quotable and performative. Northeastern dialect, slang, emphatic delivery and deliberate exaggeration made short clips easy to recognize out of context. A viewer did not need the complete backstory to reuse a gesture, line or persona in a new edit. Over time, the collection of clips mattered as much as any individual incident: fans remembered a repertoire of characters and scenes rather than a settled factual timeline.

Brother Hu and Captain Shamate
Brother Hu and Captain Shamate were the two best-known names attached to the feud. In the clips, each presented a strong, theatrical persona, which gave audiences material for imitation and remixing. Their public identities are important to the meme’s history, but the available reporting does not establish the episodes as straightforward autobiography.
Performance rather than documented biography
Sixth Tone reported on October 16, 2026, that the feud was widely believed to be staged or scripted, “a scripted collaboration designed for dramatic effect,” quoting game researcher and author Chen Menghan. That qualification changes how the meme should be read. It is more accurate to call it internet performance and participatory meme culture than to repeat every clip as a factual account of two men’s lives.
How a Kuaishou feud became a Bilibili canon
The meme’s development depended on two platforms serving different functions. Kuaishou supplied the original livestream performances. Fans then recorded, reposted and edited the material for Bilibili, where users could preserve clips, add commentary and quote them in new videos.
- Raw performances on Kuaishou: The 2016 feud produced the voices, mannerisms and visual details that made the personalities identifiable.
- Archiving by viewers: People saved and circulated fragments, allowing moments from fast-moving livestreams to survive beyond their first audience.
- Remixing on Bilibili: Editors combined clips with captions, sound, reaction formats and references to other online subcultures.
- A shared canon: Repeated circulation turned scattered footage into a set of “classics” that fans could recognize and newcomers could study.
This is why “the meme” does not mean one clip or one joke. It names a community-built archive. The Kuaishou material provided the raw performances; Bilibili gave them a durable vocabulary and a social context in which quoting a scene signaled membership.
Why the Northeast Chinese setting matters
The regional identity is not decorative. Northeastern Chinese speech has a distinctive rhythm and vocabulary, and Northeastern comic performance already had a prominent place in mainland popular culture, including through the sketches associated with Zhao Benshan. The feud’s slang, bravado and comic timing therefore landed inside an existing tradition of exaggerated Northeast characters.

Kuaishou’s short-video and livestream environment amplified those traits. A strong accent or repeated phrase could become an audio signature; a dramatic reaction could function as a reusable meme template. Once clips reached Bilibili, users could detach those features from the original exchange and redeploy them in edits, parodies and commentary.
The result is a cultural mixture rather than a simple regional stereotype. The meme uses local speech and humor, but its afterlife also reflects platform behavior: clipping, ranking, quoting and remixing. Someone unfamiliar with Northeastern Mandarin may miss some wordplay, yet still understand the larger performance through posture, pacing and visual exaggeration.

A Summer in Northeast China (东北之夏, DongBeiZhiXia) is a free Steam game released on January 9, 2023, by Zhuangbuchun Studio. It is presented as a gal game—a character-focused visual-novel format associated with routes or relationships involving female characters—while also functioning as an adaptation of the Dongbei meme archive.
| Element | What is established |
|---|---|
| Platform | Steam |
| Price | Free digital release |
| Developer | Zhuangbuchun Studio, created by Zhuangbuchun |
| Release date | January 9, 2023 |
| Format | Gal game / visual novel |
| Protagonist | Xiaoliang |
| Source relationship | Fictionalized, gender-swapped versions of recognizable meme figures |
The game follows Xiaoliang as she tries to recover memories with help from female companions inspired by the original cast. It is not a recording of the livestream feud and does not ask the player to reconstruct a factual case file. Instead, it uses familiar traits and references as ingredients in a linear, character-driven story.
How the game transforms the original material
Gender-swapping the source roles
The most conspicuous change is that the male livestream roles are reimagined as women. The adaptation retains names, signature visual traits and personality cues in altered form, so fans can identify the connections without treating the game’s characters as documentary portraits. Gender-swapping also changes the social dynamics: confrontational public personas become relationships that can develop through dialogue and shared memories.

From clips to a linear narrative
Livestream clips are fragmentary and often depend on audience knowledge. A visual novel needs an entry point, sequence and emotional through-line. A Summer in Northeast China supplies those through Xiaoliang’s memory-recovery story and her interactions with the other characters. Longtime viewers can look for callbacks, while newcomers can follow the plot without having watched the original videos.
Regional speech meets ACGN style
The adaptation keeps Northeastern speech and humor as part of its identity, then combines them with shamate imagery, otaku culture and broader ACGN aesthetics. “Shamate” here points to the striking hair, fashion and self-presentation associated with an online subculture that became recognizable in Chinese internet culture. The game’s visual language lets that subculture coexist with the regional setting instead of treating either one as a museum piece.
Original meme and game compared
| Comparison axis | Original meme | A Summer in Northeast China |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Kuaishou livestream clips, later circulated on Bilibili | Steam digital game |
| Form | Short confrontational performances and fan edits | Linear visual novel / gal-game narrative |
| Character treatment | Male livestream personas known as Brother Hu and Captain Shamate | Fictionalized female characters inspired by those figures |
| Tone | Bravado, argument and comic exaggeration | Character-driven comedy shaped by memory and relationships |
| Cultural register | Northeastern dialect, slang and livestream performance | Northeastern humor combined with shamate, otaku and ACGN aesthetics |
| Audience entry point | Recognition of clips and shared quotations | A plotted story that can be followed without complete meme knowledge |
The table shows why calling the game a simple “port” would be misleading. Its source is audiovisual and communal; its destination is authored and sequential. The adaptation preserves recognition while changing the unit of meaning from a quotable moment to a character encounter.
How Zhuangbuchun developed the project
Zhuangbuchun developed the game in public rather than presenting a finished product without explanation. The project was self-funded and partly supported through an Afdian crowdfunding campaign. Audience members commented on character designs, voice acting, accents and delays, and the creator sometimes changed the game in response.
That feedback loop resembles the meme’s original circulation. The livestream feud became a canon because viewers selected, repeated and reshaped moments; the game likewise evolved through conversation with its audience. The difference is that the creator had to make editorial decisions—what to preserve, what to fictionalize and how to give the material a coherent ending.

Announcement and reception milestones
Before release, the gender-swapped adaptation drew a large audience. Zhuangbuchun’s Bilibili announcement video in April 2022 received more than 1.5 million views, 71,000 likes, 23,000 saves and 11,000 reposts, according to the figures reported by Sixth Tone.
At launch, Sixth Tone reported more than 12,000 positive Steam reviews and an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating. Those numbers describe the storefront snapshot reported on October 16, 2026; Steam totals and labels can change as new reviews arrive, so they should not be treated as a permanent score.
What newcomers should expect when they play
You do not need a complete meme history
The game is designed as a linear story, so a first-time player can approach it as a visual novel about Xiaoliang and the women around her. Prior knowledge mainly changes the pleasure of recognition: fans may notice a name, silhouette, accent or callback that a newcomer reads simply as characterization.
Expect adaptation, not reenactment
The source figures are transformed rather than copied. Their recognizable traits survive, but the game’s female cast, memory plot and relationship-centered scenes give those traits new meanings. Looking for one-to-one factual correspondence will obscure what the adaptation is doing.

Language carries part of the joke
Northeastern dialect and slang are central to the atmosphere. Translations can convey plot and broad humor while losing some rhythm, wordplay or social nuance. That is a limitation of transferring regionally marked speech across languages, not evidence that the game lacks a coherent story.
Why this adaptation matters
The journey from Kuaishou to Bilibili to Steam demonstrates how Chinese internet culture can move between media without remaining unchanged. A livestream performance becomes a clip; a clip becomes a quoted “classic”; a canon becomes a game with scenes, pacing and fictional arcs. Each stage adds an editor: viewers on Bilibili, then Zhuangbuchun as the game’s author.
It also shows why regional identity can survive a change of genre. The game’s ACGN presentation does not erase Northeast China. Dialect, comic timing and local references remain the material that distinguishes these characters from generic visual-novel archetypes. At the same time, the visual-novel format makes the material legible to players who encounter it through Steam rather than through Chinese livestream culture.
Sixth Tone summarized that movement by writing, “The game has traveled from Kuaishou to Bilibili to Steam, changing along the way. But for all the distance it has traveled, it has never really left Northeast China.” That is the clearest explanation of the adaptation’s appeal: it is both an archive of a specific regional meme and a new work with its own structure.

The essential takeaway
The Northeast Chinese meme is not a single catchphrase and not a reliable biography of Brother Hu and Captain Shamate. It is a participatory archive of performed conflict, regional speech and fan remixing. A Summer in Northeast China turns that archive into a fictional, gender-swapped visual novel: free on Steam, led by Xiaoliang, and shaped by the same Northeastern humor that made the original clips memorable. The game is best understood as a transformation of internet folklore, not as a literal recreation of the feud.
