What the fourth-generation Siri Remote adds
Apple announced the new remote alongside Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. The remote keeps the familiar design but adds two ways to locate it:

Apple says Find My support is available on Siri Remote (2nd generation or later), while Precision Finding is specifically associated with the fourth-generation remote and the qualifying iPhones listed below. The sound-playing feature is exclusive to the newest remote.

Which iPhone supports Precision Finding?

Apple’s compatibility note requires current iOS software, and regional availability can affect the feature. An iPhone that meets the model requirement but is not updated may not provide the directional experience.

Why older iPhones cannot provide the directional view
Macworld reports that the remote uses Bluetooth 6 Channel Sounding to calculate distance and direction. The implementation reportedly depends on Apple’s N1 chip in the iPhone, which explains why the supported families begin with iPhone 17-era hardware and include iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, while iPhone 17e and earlier models are excluded.
This is a reported technical explanation, not a complete engineering specification published by Apple. It also differs from the ultra-wideband approach used by earlier Precision Finding systems. In practical terms, the remote can still be registered in Find My with an older phone, but the phone cannot provide the same arrow-like, directional guidance.
What happens with an older iPhone?
Basic Find My locating
An older iPhone can still use ordinary Find My behavior for a compatible Siri Remote. You can check its reported location in the Find My app, subject to the normal limitations of wireless-device location.

A sound from the remote
The fourth-generation remote’s speaker can play a locating chime even when the iPhone cannot perform Precision Finding. That makes the $59 remote more useful than an older remote for finding it under cushions or in another nearby room, although it does not create directional guidance.
Does the new remote work with an older Apple TV?
Yes. Apple says the standalone remote works with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. MacRumors lists compatibility with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K generations 1 through 4. Those models cover Apple TV hardware released since 2015, so you do not need to buy the new television box merely to gain the updated remote features.

The standalone $59 purchase is the relevant option if your current Apple TV still works and you mainly want a remote that is easier to recover. Owners of iPhone 17e or an older iPhone should treat the purchase as a Find My and chime upgrade, not as a promise of directional Precision Finding.

Compatibility checklist before you buy
- Identify your iPhone model. Precision Finding requires iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e.
- Update the iPhone to the latest available iOS software.
- Check whether Find My hardware features are available in your region.
- Confirm that your Apple TV is an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K. The fourth-generation remote is sold separately and is compatible with those models.
- Decide whether a locating chime and standard Find My are sufficient if your iPhone is not eligible for the directional mode.
The practical verdict
The fourth-generation Siri Remote’s headline improvement is Find My with Precision Finding, but that benefit is hardware-gated. Qualifying iPhone Duo, iPhone Air and iPhone 17-or-newer owners can get directional guidance after updating iOS; iPhone 17e and older iPhones fall back to ordinary Find My, while the new remote’s speaker can still play a chime. Because the $59 remote works with existing Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K hardware, it is a targeted accessory upgrade rather than an Apple TV replacement.
