Digital-wellness products should not treat more time in an app as proof of success. A better measure may be whether people use a tool intentionally, get what they need, and can stop when they choose. That creates a real design and business challenge: helping someone reach an endpoint is different from losing them because the product failed, and current evidence does not show that products built around completion are automatically healthier or more profitable.
What does it mean for a digital-wellness product to have an ending?
An ending is a useful stopping point, not necessarily a permanent goodbye. A person might finish a course, establish a routine, complete a short-term goal, or decide they no longer need an app. The product can support that outcome instead of continually pulling the person back for another session.

This is purposeful completion, and it must be distinguished from unwanted abandonment. A user who leaves after meeting a goal has had a different experience from someone who leaves because the app is buggy, intrusive, expensive, or no longer useful. The available abandonment research records discontinuation and possible reasons; it does not establish how many users left because they had reached a healthy endpoint.

Why engagement and wellbeing can point in different directions
Many consumer technologies have traditionally been designed to maximize engagement. Digital-wellbeing features take a different tack: they can help users manage time spent or encourage breaks. In a CHI 2019 research-and-practice agenda, Cecchinato and coauthors argue that wellbeing features may be preferable to abstinence because technology is valuable in many people’s lives. The aim need not be to reject technology; it can be to make its use more intentional. Read the agenda from Microsoft Research.

That distinction matters for product design. A tool that counts minutes or blocks access may help some people, but screen time alone cannot tell whether a session was useful, whether the person achieved a goal, or whether a limit fits their circumstances. A functionality review of digital-wellbeing apps found a strong focus on limiting screen time and distinguished monitoring use, tracking it against set limits, and intervening to support limited use. Its design implications include moving beyond screen time, supporting meaningful use, and using friction thoughtfully. See the functionality review.
What evidence says about intentional use and stopping
Intentional use is associated with better outcomes, but causation is not established
A 2026 cross-sectional study of 842 adults ages 18–65 examined technology use across social media, entertainment, information seeking, and communication. Intentional use was associated with higher attentional control and psychological wellbeing; passive use was associated with lower scores on both. The associations remained significant after the researchers controlled for overall screen time. Because this was observational, it cannot show that intentional use caused the differences. The authors also said the study was not preregistered and should be treated as hypothesis-generating, not confirmatory. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

Discontinuation is common, but it is not a wellbeing metric
A 2025 Journal of Medical Internet Research scoping review covered 18 studies and 525,824 participants using apps for physical activity, diet, alcohol, smoking, or mental health. Across those studies, the median discontinuation rate was 70% within the first 100 days. The review found that more users tended to stop soon after acquiring an app, with discontinuation slowing among those who remained. Those figures describe use patterns; they do not show that most people completed a goal or benefited before leaving. Read the scoping review.

- Technical or functional problems
- Privacy concerns
- Poor user experience
- Content or features that do not meet expectations
- Time or financial costs
- Changing user needs or goals
Its category-specific estimates varied substantially and came from small numbers of studies with differing methods: physical-activity apps showed 54%–75% abandonment across three studies; alcohol apps, 95%–97% across two; smoking apps, 40% in one; mental-health apps, 89%–92% across two; and diet apps, 86% in one. These are not harmonized forecasts for current apps. The review’s authors also cautioned that apparent differences in how quickly people left particular app categories rested on relatively few studies.
How to design an ending without mistaking failure for success
A product cannot infer that a person is better off simply because they stopped opening it. It needs ways to understand the user’s goal and the reason for nonuse, while leaving control with the user. These design questions are a practical synthesis of the evidence, not a validated scoring system:

- User agency: Can people choose a goal, limit, or stopping point, and revise it when their needs change?
- Session structure: Does the product provide a natural stopping point, an optional reminder, or a deliberate pause? Is a hard block genuinely needed, or would user-controlled friction be more appropriate?
- Meaning of nonuse: Can the team distinguish a reported goal completion from a technical failure, privacy concern, cost issue, or unmet need?
- Evidence quality: Are outcomes measured as time spent, self-reported wellbeing, goal completion, or longer-term behavior? Are findings correlational or causal?
- Business evidence: Does product-specific data show effects on willingness to pay, referrals, renewals, or support costs?
Tools such as iOS Screen Time, Android Digital Wellbeing, Forest, and Moment have been discussed in research as examples of monitoring or regulating smartphone use. A 2023 mixed-method study using a student sample emphasized that motivation, changing circumstances, individual needs, and device context matter. These examples are categories, not current feature recommendations or effectiveness rankings. See the 2023 study.

Can a product that helps users leave become a sound business?
That remains an open commercial question. The evidence cited here does not establish whether purposeful completion improves revenue, renewals, referrals, willingness to pay, or operating costs. Nor does it prove that a finite-use model is sustainable. A company making that case needs product-specific evidence, rather than treating falling engagement or high discontinuation as proof of success.

A more credible approach is to define what success means for a particular product and measure it directly. Depending on the product’s purpose, that could include user-reported goal completion, sustained behavior after leaving, or a chosen reduction in use. Businesses would also need to track outcomes such as retention among users who still need the service, referrals, paid renewals, and support burden—without assuming those results from wellbeing measures alone.
The central opportunity is not to celebrate every exit. It is to build products that respect a user’s purpose, make stopping a legitimate choice, and learn whether the person left satisfied or because the product let them down.
