The first response to ChatGPT-assisted homework was a race to ban it and identify it. That approach is giving way to a governed, process-based model: each assignment states what AI help is allowed, students show how their work was produced, and assessments are redesigned to reveal understanding. A detector score may prompt a conversation, but it is not proof that a student cheated.
Why detector-led enforcement is losing credibility
Carnegie Mellon University’s Eberly Center advises “extreme caution” when attempting to detect whether student work was aided or generated by AI. Its guidance says that no AI-detection service had been established as accurate, with false positives, false negatives and inconclusive results all possible. That is a warning about the state of the evidence, not a claim that every tool will always fail.

Investigators have reached the same practical conclusion. In an ABC News report, Macquarie University academic-integrity head Kane Murdoch said: “As an investigator [of cheating] I’m unwilling to accept the detectors word on it.” Universities have switched off or limited detector services after accuracy concerns. A classifier can produce a probability-like signal, but it cannot establish who wrote a passage, what assistance was authorized, or whether the student understands the submitted work.
The historical numbers also show why blanket assumptions are unreliable. A 2023 Center for Democracy & Technology survey, quoted by ABC, found that 58% of students reported using generative AI in the prior year; 19% of that group said they had used it to write and submit papers. Those figures describe that survey and date, not current prevalence in every school or country.

Assignment-level rules replace blanket bans
The durable replacement is a clear rule attached to each task. Students often take several courses with different expectations, so a generic campus statement is not enough. The instructor should explain the policy in writing and, where possible, verbally.
Define the permitted level of help
- Allowed: activities such as brainstorming, generating questions, language feedback or outlining, if the assignment explicitly permits them.
- Restricted or prohibited: generating prose, solving assessed problems, fabricating sources or submitting AI output as the student’s own when the brief does not authorize it.
- Always required: compliance with the specific course and assignment instructions, even when another class has a different policy.
State disclosure and citation expectations
A policy should say whether students must identify the tool, describe what it did, preserve prompts or outputs, and cite generated ideas or text. “Use AI responsibly” is too vague to guide a high-stakes submission. The required disclosure should be proportionate to the task and accessible to students who use assistive technology or language support.

Evidence of learning replaces a detector percentage
Process evidence lets a teacher test understanding directly. Depending on the subject, an assignment can require:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- a topic proposal and research question;
- notes, an outline and dated drafts;
- version history showing substantive development;
- source checks and an explanation of why sources were chosen;
- records of AI prompts or outputs when those records are part of the approved workflow;
- a short oral explanation, demonstration or practical examination.
These artifacts are not a demand for unnecessary surveillance. They should be limited to evidence that serves the learning objective. An oral defense may be useful for a design project, while a supervised calculation, performance or lab demonstration may be more valid for another subject. ABC reported interviews and practical examinations as alternatives to relying on automated detection.

How assessment design is changing
Schools and universities are not simply trying to freeze technology at an earlier moment. They are asking whether a task measures the intended knowledge and skills when generative tools are available.
| Question | Detector-first approach | Process-based approach |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticity | Infers authorship from linguistic patterns. | Examines drafts, decisions and the student’s explanation. |
| Validity | Can reward writing that evades a classifier rather than subject mastery. | Aligns evidence with the stated learning objective. |
| Transparency | A score may be difficult to interpret or defend. | Teachers can point to observable work and reasoning. |
| Accessibility | May disadvantage multilingual writers or students whose writing has unusual patterns. | Offers multiple ways to demonstrate understanding, when appropriate. |
| Workload | Adds disputes and manual investigation around uncertain alerts. | Uses checkpoints or sampling while retaining teacher judgment. |
| Privacy | May send student writing to an external classifier. | Requires a deliberate decision about what data, if any, enters a third-party system. |
| Scalability | Looks easy to apply but can create inequitable appeals. | Uses structured milestones and proportionate checks that can work in large classes. |
What teachers gain and risk
A study of Swedish university teachers by Sporrong, McGrath and Cerratto Pargman found anticipated benefits from AI quiz generators, auto-grading and integrated assessment. Participants expected more consistent measures and possible relief from repetitive marking. One participant said, “it will probably be a fairer assessment. If it assesses everyone the same way. Because we don’t.”

The same study identified serious trade-offs: opaque automation can make grades harder to explain, weaken teacher judgment and strain teacher–student relationships. Automation should therefore handle routine support only when educators can inspect its operation, challenge an output and remain accountable for the final judgment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Read the assignment-specific rule. Do not rely on a school-wide statement or on what another teacher allows.
- Separate permitted from prohibited help. Brainstorming permission does not automatically authorize generated paragraphs, answers or code.
- Keep evidence as you work. Save notes, drafts, source checks and any AI interaction the policy asks you to retain.
- Verify every factual claim and citation. A fluent answer can contain invented sources, wrong calculations or missing context.
- Disclose use in the required format. Identify the tool and the role it played if the instructor asks for that information.
- Be ready to explain the submission. You should be able to defend the argument, method, sources and revisions without asking the tool to answer for you.
What schools should govern before adopting an AI tool
Procurement and classroom use need evidence rather than marketing claims. The UK government evidence board and testbed described in a 2025 UK parliamentary debate are intended to evaluate workload, pupil outcomes and inclusivity. That model points to a practical approval test:
Best Value
- Learning: Does the tool improve the targeted outcome, or merely produce faster text?
- Workload: Does it reduce repetitive work without outsourcing professional judgment?
- Inclusion: Can English-language learners and students with disabilities participate without being penalized by the format?
- Privacy: What student data is collected, where is it processed, and has the institution vetted the provider?
- Transparency: Can a teacher explain an automated recommendation or grade?
- Scale: Can the process be applied consistently without imposing an extra burden on students who need accommodations?
What the available use data actually says
Use is widespread but uneven. Evidence presented in the UK Parliament in 2025 cited a November 2024 omnibus survey in which 50% of teachers said they had used generative AI in their role, while only 6% said pupils were permitted to use AI in set work. The same debate estimated that between one in three and three in four children used AI in homework to some degree. That range is an estimate presented in debate, not a single nationally representative official statistic.
Those figures explain why schools are moving toward explicit permissions and process evidence. Students are already encountering the tools, but institutions still need to decide when use supports learning, when it undermines the objective and what proof is fair.
The new normal: governed use, not assumed authorship
The post-panic model treats AI as a condition of assessment rather than a problem a detector can solve. Clear assignment rules prevent accidental misconduct; drafts and explanations show whether learning occurred; redesigned tasks make the intended skill visible; and governance protects privacy, accessibility and teacher judgment. A school can still prohibit AI for a particular task, but it should do so openly and assess compliance through evidence of the student’s process—not an unverified percentage from a classifier.
