The Modern F1 Pit Crew: The Engineers and AI Systems Behind Race-Day Decisions

Formula 1’s modern “pit crew” includes people who deploy technology, analyse performance and support decisions under race-weekend pressure—not just the crew working on the car. Atlassian Williams F1 Team uses that pit-crew metaphor for its trackside technology group, while describing strategy and operations, software engineering, and data and AI as distinct functions. Those roles support racing; public sources do not show AI independently making a team’s strategic calls.

What does “pit crew” mean when the work is software and data?

Williams describes its Technology & Innovation Group as having several related but different responsibilities. Its trackside technology team deploys software and systems, provides real-time performance insight, and supports quick decisions. Strategy and operations, software engineering, and data and AI are separately described areas of work. The team’s “pit crew” phrase is a metaphor for technology support, not a claim that every engineer has the same job or that all F1 teams share Williams’s organisational structure. • Trackside technology: keeps technology and software working at the circuit and helps make performance information available when needed.
  • Strategy and operations: concerns strategic direction and operational decisions. The public description does not disclose teams’ algorithms or precisely divide authority among roles.
  • Software engineering: builds and supports software systems used in the broader engineering operation.
  • Data and AI: works with data and analytical methods to develop insight. The available public account does not quantify how many AI specialists a team employs or their effect on race results.

Why race-weekend work is a deadline problem

A race weekend compresses the time available to collect information, check that systems are functioning, interpret performance and put useful analysis in front of the people making decisions. The pressure is real, but there is no single published countdown that applies to every team, role or decision. Some work is live support at the circuit; software and performance work can also extend beyond the immediate race session.

It helps to distinguish an engineer’s output from the sporting decision itself. A reliable deployed system or a useful analysis can inform a decision; that does not establish that an AI system chooses a team’s strategy. Williams’s role descriptions support a picture of technology and analysis serving race operations, not autonomous control.

How team engineering differs from F1 broadcast operations

Formula 1’s broadcast operation has its own technology workforce and remote infrastructure. F1 describes an onsite Event Technical Centre (ETC) that acquires content, data and feeds, which are sent to its UK-based Remote Technical Centre (RTC) for processing and publishing. That is a broadcast workflow, not evidence that team race engineers generally work remotely. Formula 1: remote broadcast operation

In a 2025 sustainability article, Formula One World Championship Limited reported approximately 140 people working remotely at each race weekend for this broadcast operation. That is not a headcount for team-side AI or engineering staff. In an account of the broadcast transition published in 2020, the organisation said the change reduced travelling staff by 36% and freight by one-third; those figures describe that historical transition, not a current universal staffing measure. What AI automation does at FIA race control

The FIA’s Remote Operations Centre (ROC) provides a separate example of automation in the sport. The FIA describes computer-vision and automated workflows that help process race incidents. Tim Malyon, identified by the FIA as Head of the ROC, explained one workflow: “What we’ve done this year is develop the systems to be a lot more automated so that from the ROC, we can pause the video, press a button, check the data is right and hit send to add the incident into the Race Control systems.” FIA: Remote Operations Centre

This is AI-assisted official incident processing, not a description of a team’s race-strategy engine. The example also shows the role of verification: the workflow includes checking that the data is right before sending an incident into Race Control systems. The FIA account does not establish that the system makes sporting judgments autonomously.

What a separate motorsport AI example can—and cannot—show

OpenAI’s account of its collaboration with Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) says the first-year focus was using AI to make sense of car-sensor data and race- and pit-crew performance data. CGR is not an F1 team, and this is the vendor’s description of its own collaboration. It illustrates a broader motorsport use for AI—finding patterns in complex operational data—but does not prove that an F1 team uses the same tools, achieves a particular result, or has automated its strategy. How the 2026 regulations change the engineering context

The FIA’s 2026 overview describes changes involving car design, power and aerodynamics. These shifts make engineering and performance analysis an evolving challenge, but the regulations page does not reveal any team’s specific AI roadmap, staffing plan or software implementation.
