Buy the PS5 version if you want the clearest documented value, offline play and optional PS VR2 support. Choose Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop play is the deciding feature. Choose PC if you already own a suitable gaming computer and want the flexibility of Steam settings, but current authoritative information does not prove that PC runs at a higher resolution or frame rate than either console.
The short answer
The Midnight Walk is the same single-player dark-fantasy adventure on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam. The important differences are how and where you play it, not a documented difference in the story or core gameplay. You play as the Burnt One, travelling with a lost lantern creature called Potboy. Potboy’s flame can distract or help you evade monsters while you move through a world created from real clay sculptures that were 3D-scanned and animated in a stop-motion style.

| Platform | Best for | Documented facts | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Most straightforward console purchase; players who want optional VR | Current US PlayStation listing shows $29.99; offline play is supported; PS VR2 play is optional | No authoritative resolution or frame-rate comparison with the other versions |
| Switch 2 | Handheld and tabletop play | Handheld, tabletop and TV modes; 14.7 GB listed digital download; released March 26, 2026 | No confirmed performance, resolution or frame-rate figures in the available listing |
| PC (Steam) | People who already have a suitable gaming PC and want adjustable settings | Available on Steam; normal-screen play is supported | No controlled evidence that it is categorically better than PS5; no verified figures here for resolution, frame rate or hardware requirements |
For a US buyer choosing only from the documented information, PS5 is the safest default recommendation because its current price and offline capability are explicit. Switch 2 is the better choice when portability matters more than a living-room-only setup. PC makes sense when you already own compatible hardware; buying or upgrading a computer solely for this game requires checking the current Steam requirements yourself.

What is the same on every version?
One dark-fantasy adventure
All three releases deliver the same core premise: a single-player journey through a threatening, strange world. The player controls the Burnt One and travels with Potboy, a small lantern creature that has become separated from its owner. Potboy’s flame is central to avoiding danger, because it can be used to distract or evade monsters. Nothing in the documented platform information indicates a different campaign, character roster or story route for Switch 2, PS5 or PC.

Clay-built visuals and stop-motion movement
MoonHood built the game’s visual identity from physical clay sculptures. Those sculptures were 3D-scanned and then animated in a stop-motion style, giving the characters, creatures and environments a deliberately handcrafted appearance. This is not simply a filter applied to ordinary 3D models: the clay origin is part of the production method and the reason the game looks unlike a conventional fantasy adventure.
Nintendo Life’s April 4, 2026 Switch 2 review compared the mixture of horror and charm to Tim Burton’s style. That is a reviewer’s description, not a statement from the developer, so treat it as an aesthetic comparison rather than an official classification.
Normal-screen play is available
Fast Travel Games’ March 26, 2026 launch announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam) as supported platforms and confirms normal-screen play. The PlayStation edition additionally has a VR option, but VR is not required to experience the standard game.

Price and purchase scope
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current US PlayStation listing, accessed in 2026, lists The Midnight Walk at $29.99. That is the clearest current price in the available platform information and should be read as a US digital-store listing, not a worldwide price or a guarantee of a physical edition. Prices can vary by country, tax and later promotions.
The available information does not establish a disc release, cartridge, soundtrack bundle or collector’s edition. If you are shopping for a physical copy, confirm that a retailer is actually listing one before assuming it exists.

Offline play
The official PlayStation product information states that the PS5 edition supports offline play. You still need to download or install the game first, and your console may require a connection for system or game updates, but the documented product feature means an ongoing internet connection is not required for ordinary play after installation.
PS VR2 support
The PlayStation description says: “Fully playable both on PS5 and in VR – with PS VR2.” In practical terms, PS5 is the only version in this comparison with a documented optional VR mode. You can therefore buy it for standard television play and add PS VR2 later, or choose it specifically if you already own Sony’s headset.
The wording does not say that every section must be played in VR, nor does it establish a separate VR-only campaign. It confirms that the game is playable on PS5 normally and in VR with PS VR2.
Who should choose PS5?
- Choose PS5 if you want a clearly documented US price of $29.99.
- Choose PS5 if offline play is important.
- Choose PS5 if you own, or may buy, PS VR2.
- Choose PS5 if you prefer a dedicated console and do not need to play away from a television.
Switch 2: the portability-first version
Three play modes
Nintendo’s US listing identifies the Switch 2 edition as a single-system game supporting TV, tabletop and handheld modes. Handheld mode lets you play with the console’s built-in screen and controls. Tabletop mode uses the system’s screen while the console is propped up, allowing separate controllers or a shared viewing position. TV mode places the game on a television through the dock.
These are the meaningful reasons to choose Switch 2. The listing does not claim a different story or exclusive content; it gives you more places to play the same adventure.

Storage requirement
Nintendo lists the digital edition at 14.7 GB. Treat that as the listed download size for the US Switch 2 product page, not as a promise that every future patch will fit within exactly 14.7 GB. Keep at least that much usable space, plus room for the console’s download process and updates. If your available storage is close to the limit, free space before purchasing rather than discovering the problem during installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRelease timing
Fast Travel Games announced the Switch 2 launch for March 26, 2026. That is later than the original console and PC release window: Nintendo Life’s April 4, 2026 review reports that the game first released on PS5 and PC in May 2025.
Who should choose Switch 2?
- Choose Switch 2 if you want to continue the game in bed, while travelling or away from a television.
- Choose Switch 2 if tabletop play is useful for your household.
- Choose Switch 2 if you want one purchase that supports handheld, tabletop and docked TV use.
- Choose Switch 2 if the 14.7 GB digital download fits comfortably in your available storage.
PC: flexibility, but no proven performance win
Steam availability
The PC release is available through Steam. Fast Travel Games’ March 26, 2026 announcement includes PC (Steam) alongside PS5 and Switch 2, and confirms normal-screen play. That makes PC a sensible option for someone who already has a gaming desktop or laptop connected to a suitable display and input devices.
What “better on PC” can and cannot mean here
A PC can offer adjustable graphics settings, display resolution and other options when a particular game exposes them. However, the authoritative information available for this comparison does not provide a controlled test of The Midnight Walk at matching settings. It does not establish a resolution target, frame-rate target, settings profile or patch-parity result for PC versus PS5 or Switch 2.
Do not therefore treat “PC version” as a guaranteed visual upgrade. Your actual result depends on the computer, graphics hardware, processor, memory, drivers, display and selected settings. A high-end system may give you more headroom, while an older laptop may be a poor fit. Before buying for PC, open the current Steam listing and verify its minimum and recommended requirements against your own machine; those specifications are not supplied in the platform information used here.

Who should choose PC?
- Choose PC if you already own hardware that meets the current Steam requirements.
- Choose PC if you want the possibility of adjusting display and graphics settings.
- Choose PC if your main screen and controller or keyboard setup are already there.
- Do not choose PC solely because you assume it has a higher frame rate or resolution; that comparison has not been established.
Platform comparison by the decisions that matter

| Portability | Not portable; designed for PS5 display setups | Handheld, tabletop and TV modes | Depends on the computer; no platform-wide portability claim is established |
| VR | Optional PS VR2 support; also playable normally on PS5 | No VR support is documented in the supplied listing | No VR support is documented in the supplied listing |

| Internet after installation | Offline play is supported | Not stated in the supplied Nintendo information | Not stated in the supplied Steam information |
| Release timing | First released in May 2025 | March 26, 2026 | First released in May 2025 |
“Not stated” means the cited platform information does not establish that value; it is not evidence that the feature is absent. This distinction matters especially for PC and Switch 2 performance, where unsupported assumptions can turn into misleading buying advice.
What the release dates mean for a buyer
The PS5 and PC versions arrived first, in May 2025 according to Nintendo Life’s April 4, 2026 review. Switch 2 followed on March 26, 2026. A later launch does not, by itself, prove that the Switch 2 edition has extra content or improved performance. The documented difference is timing and hardware mode support, not a confirmed change to the adventure.
If you are choosing based on access to patches, saves or content, verify those details in the current store and support information for your platform. The available platform descriptions do not establish cross-save, cross-buy, cross-play, transfer tools or identical patch versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to buy and install the right version
Before purchasing
- Pick your primary place to play. Select television and optional VR for PS5, handheld/tabletop flexibility for Switch 2, or an existing computer setup for PC.
- Check the edition and region. The $29.99 figure is a current US PS5 listing. Store prices and availability can differ elsewhere.
- Confirm storage. For Switch 2, reserve space for the listed 14.7 GB download and future updates. For PS5 and PC, use the current store page because the supplied information does not give an install-size figure.
- Check hardware before choosing PC. Compare your computer with the current Steam minimum and recommended requirements. Do not infer suitability from the fact that the game runs on consoles.
- Decide whether VR is essential. If you specifically want a documented VR mode, PS5 with PS VR2 is the supported choice described by the PlayStation page.
After purchase
- Install the game from your platform’s official store or library. Allow the download to finish before judging available storage.
- Apply available updates when convenient. A later patch can change file size or behavior, so the original listing number should not be treated as a permanent total.
- On Switch 2, select the mode you need. Use handheld, tabletop or docked TV play according to where you are playing; all three are listed modes for the same single-system edition.
- On PS5, start in standard play or connect PS VR2. The game is documented as playable both on PS5 normally and in VR with PS VR2.
- On PC, begin with the Steam-recommended settings. If the game exposes adjustable options, change one setting at a time so you can identify the effect on image quality and smoothness.
Performance and image-quality expectations
The game’s scanned-clay models and stop-motion presentation are central to its look, but the available sources do not publish a measured comparison of resolution or frame rate between Switch 2, PS5 and PC. There is no responsible basis here for claiming a particular console runs at 30 or 60 frames per second, for naming an output resolution, or for declaring PC the definitive visual winner.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat limitation does not prevent a practical choice. PS5 is the platform with the strongest documented feature set in the supplied information: a current US price, offline play and PS VR2 support. Switch 2’s advantage is the display arrangement rather than a measured graphics target. PC’s advantage is potential configurability for owners of suitable hardware, not a verified benchmark result.
If exact performance is your deciding factor, wait for platform-specific testing or consult the current technical information for the version you intend to buy. Treat any retailer or forum claim about frame rate as a separate claim that needs its own evidence.
Decision guide: choose by your situation
You own a PS5 and do not own PS VR2
PS5 remains the least complicated recommendation because the US price is documented at $29.99 and offline play is explicitly supported. Switch 2 is worth choosing instead only if handheld or tabletop access changes when and where you can realistically play.
You own a Switch 2 and value portable play
Choose Switch 2. Its listed handheld, tabletop and TV modes directly answer the portability requirement, and the 14.7 GB download gives you a concrete storage check before buying.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You own both PS5 and Switch 2
Choose based on location and display. Select PS5 for the documented PS VR2 option, offline play and the known US price. Select Switch 2 when playing away from the television is more valuable than those features.
You already have a gaming PC
PC is reasonable when your computer meets the current Steam requirements and you prefer Steam’s ecosystem or adjustable settings. Do not pay for a hardware upgrade on the assumption that the game is proven to look or run better there; the available sources do not provide that comparison.
You are buying a platform specifically for this game
The game alone does not justify a platform purchase on documented evidence. PS5 has the most clearly stated features, Switch 2 has unique portability, and PC requires hardware you may already own. Compare the platform’s broader library and your existing equipment rather than treating an unverified performance claim as decisive.
Common buying mistakes
- Assuming the later Switch 2 release means extra content. The March 26, 2026 date establishes launch timing, not an expansion or different campaign.
- Reading $29.99 as a global price. It is the current US PlayStation listing accessed in 2026; other regions can differ.
- Assuming 14.7 GB is the final lifetime storage need. It is Nintendo’s listed digital size and does not account for future updates or temporary download space.
- Buying PC for an imaginary benchmark advantage. No controlled resolution or frame-rate comparison is established here.
- Expecting VR on every platform. The documented VR option is PS VR2 on PS5; the supplied Switch 2 and Steam information does not document VR support.
- Assuming a physical edition exists. The available information confirms digital-store listings and does not verify a disc, cartridge or collector package.
- Expecting cross-save or cross-buy. Those features are not established in the supplied platform descriptions.
Final recommendation
For most US console buyers, get The Midnight Walk on PS5: the current PlayStation listing gives a concrete $29.99 price, offline play is supported, and PS VR2 is available as an optional way to experience the game. Get the Switch 2 edition when handheld or tabletop play is the feature that will determine whether you actually play it; Nintendo lists all three display modes and a 14.7 GB digital download. Choose PC when you already have suitable hardware and want Steam-based flexibility, while keeping expectations realistic because no authoritative source in this comparison proves a PC resolution or frame-rate advantage.
