Start The Midnight Walk by opening its Options menu before committing to the first long chapter. Check display, subtitles, audio, controls, and accessibility-related tabs, then make small changes in a shadow-heavy scene. On Switch 2, the best starting point is a readable image and subtitles at your normal viewing distance, not a blindly brighter picture or every visual effect switched off.
The Switch 2 release is built around dark, lighting-dependent scenes, clay-sculpted stop-motion imagery, and stealth moments in which Potboy’s flame distracts fire-eating monsters. Those choices make brightness, text contrast, motion comfort, and audio balance practical gameplay settings rather than cosmetic preferences.

What the Switch 2 edition includes
Nintendo lists The Midnight Walk as a digital Nintendo Switch 2 edition from Fast Travel Games, released on March 26, 2026. The listed download size is 14.7 GB. It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, one player on one system, the languages shown on Nintendo’s regional product page, and surround sound.

The presentation is unusual: Nintendo describes a world made from real clay, 3D-scanned and presented as stop-motion imagery. The result is intentionally tactile and atmospheric. A Nintendo Life review published April 4, 2026, describes the game as a stop-motion horror adventure and says its Switch 2 coverage was captured in handheld, undocked play.

Nintendo’s public Switch 2 listing does not publish a complete inventory of graphics, subtitle, control, or accessibility toggles. Therefore, treat exact option names, available sliders, and default values as features to verify in the current build rather than guaranteed specifications.
Why the first settings matter in The Midnight Walk
Many scenes depend on the difference between a visible edge and a nearly lost shadow. A screen that looks fine on a bright menu can become difficult when the game moves into a dark passage. Handheld viewing also changes the result because the screen is closer to your eyes and ambient light can fall directly across it.
Readability has a gameplay consequence. Potboy’s flame can distract fire-eating monsters while you hide and evade threats. If the flame, nearby cover, or a path through the scene disappears into black, you can misread a stealth opportunity. Subtitles matter for the same reason: dialogue can carry timing or context while you are watching an enemy rather than looking at the speaker.
Stop-motion imagery can also make movement feel different from a conventional real-time 3D game. Grain, blur, camera shake, or flashes may be artistically deliberate, but reducing them can help players who find rapid visual changes uncomfortable or who need a cleaner image to track objects.

- Pause the game and open Options or the similarly named system menu.
- Inspect the Display, Graphics, or Video section for brightness and visual-effect controls.
- Open Subtitles or Accessibility and check text size, speaker identification, background, and contrast options if present.
- Review Audio for master volume, effects, dialogue, music, subtitle-related cues, and surround output.
- Review Controls for stick sensitivity, inversion, vibration, and any remapping the current build exposes.
- Apply one change at a time, return to a dark or dialogue-heavy scene, and decide whether the change improved the way you actually play.
Do not assume that a control documented for a different edition appears on Switch 2. Reports of subtitle sizing and comfort controls on other versions are useful prompts for checking the menu, not proof of Switch 2 parity.
Set brightness for the screen and room you are using
Begin with the default brightness, then make a small adjustment while standing in a shadow-heavy scene. Increase it only until you can distinguish important silhouettes, paths, and interactable areas. Raising it too far can flatten the intended contrast and make the clay lighting look washed out.
Handheld checks
- Hold the console at your normal playing distance rather than close to your face.
- Check the darkest scene you expect to play, not just the opening area.
- Turn away from windows or strong lamps before deciding that the game itself is too dark.
- After changing brightness, verify that black areas still look distinct from dark gray surfaces and that highlights are not distracting.
TV and tabletop checks
- Use the distance and room lighting in which you normally play.
- Check the same shadow-heavy scene after docking; a setting that works handheld may look excessive on a larger display.
- Have another player sit at the usual viewing position if subtitle readability is a concern.
No cited Switch 2 source publishes a recommended brightness percentage, so there is no defensible universal number. The correct target is consistent recognition of scene detail without destroying the game’s intentional darkness.
Make subtitles readable before you need them
If the Switch 2 build exposes subtitle size, increase it until text is legible at your normal distance without leaning toward the screen. If it offers speaker labels, enable them when voices are difficult to place. A background panel, outline, or contrast control can help when pale lettering crosses a bright clay surface.
Use a short dialogue exchange to test the result. Read from your normal posture, with the game’s effects playing, rather than pausing on a static menu. If the text remains difficult to parse, adjust one of the following controls if the current build provides it:

| Control to look for | What to change | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Subtitle size | Raise it until lines are readable without moving closer | Larger text occupies more of the image |
| Speaker labels | Turn them on when identifying voices is difficult | Additional words appear with each line |
| Background or window | Use a solid or translucent panel behind text | It covers more of the stop-motion scene |
| Text outline or contrast | Choose the strongest readable contrast available | High-contrast text can look less subtle |
Nintendo’s listing does not confirm which of these controls are present on Switch 2. If a control is absent, compensate with your viewing distance, room lighting, system volume, or a quieter audio mix rather than assuming the game is malfunctioning.

Look for entries such as film grain, motion blur, camera shake, screen effects, flashing effects, or reduced visual intensity. The public Switch 2 product information does not enumerate these toggles, so their names and availability are build-dependent.
When to reduce effects
- Film grain: disabling it can make fine details and subtitle edges cleaner.
- Motion blur: reducing it can make camera movement easier to follow, especially on a handheld screen.
- Camera shake: reducing or disabling it can help with discomfort and make stealth observation steadier.
- Flashes or intense patterns: use a reduced setting if one is provided and bright transitions are uncomfortable.
When to keep effects enabled
Some players prefer the intended cinematic presentation and find that grain or movement effects reinforce the handcrafted stop-motion mood. Change one effect, test it during normal play, and keep it enabled if it does not reduce clarity or comfort. There is no published Switch 2 performance profile establishing that any particular effect improves frame rate, so do not treat these options as a guaranteed performance mode.
Use separate starting profiles for handheld and TV play
Nintendo confirms that the game supports handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, but it does not publish mode-specific presets. Recheck the following after changing modes:
| Priority | Handheld starting point | TV starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Small increase only if room light hides shadows; verify at normal handheld distance | Start at default and adjust while seated at the usual TV distance |
| Subtitles | Use the largest comfortable size and strong contrast | Choose a size readable from the sofa; add a background if the room is bright |
| Motion effects | Reduce blur or shake if close viewing causes discomfort | Keep the intended effects unless camera movement is distracting |
| Audio | Favor clear dialogue and effects over excessive volume | Check speaker placement, surround output, and dialogue audibility from the seating position |
Tabletop play sits between these cases: the display is closer than a TV but may be viewed in a brighter room. Test it independently instead of copying either profile.

Review controls for comfort and stealth precision
Open the controls page and confirm stick sensitivity, camera inversion, vibration, and any remapping offered by the current build. A lower sensitivity can make slow observation easier; a higher value can reduce the effort needed to turn quickly. Inversion is personal, so set it before a tense encounter rather than learning it during one.
Vibration can provide useful feedback, but reducing it may help players who find repeated rumble distracting. If the game offers separate camera and aiming sensitivities, change them independently and test a short movement route. Nintendo’s public listing does not provide a Switch 2 control map or a remapping list, so only options visible in your installed version should be treated as confirmed.
Balance audio, subtitles, and surround output
Nintendo lists surround-sound support. If you use a surround-capable setup, check that dialogue remains easy to locate and that effects do not overpower speech. With headphones or small speakers, a subtitle-led mix can be more practical: keep dialogue audible, lower effects that mask voices, and use subtitles as confirmation rather than forcing the master volume higher.
After switching between handheld speakers, headphones, and a TV system, repeat a short dialogue scene. Audio balance can change more than the picture when you move between modes, so do not assume one volume setting works everywhere.

Nintendo’s product information carries a warning for people with epilepsy or unusual reactions to flashing lights or patterns. Consult a doctor if that warning applies to you, and read the Health and Safety Information in the Switch system settings. If the game’s current build provides a reduced-flash or similar visual option, use it, but do not treat an optional toggle as a substitute for medical advice.

Troubleshoot the most common readability problems
| Symptom | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dark areas merge into one shape | Room lighting and display brightness | Make a small brightness change, then retest a shadow-heavy scene without over-brightening the whole image |
| Subtitles disappear against the scene | Text size and contrast controls | Enable a background, outline, or speaker labels if available; otherwise improve viewing distance and room lighting |
| Movement feels uncomfortable | Motion blur, camera shake, and flashes | Reduce one effect at a time and test normal play rather than a paused menu |
| Dialogue is hard to hear | Audio output and speaker placement | Use headphones or a clearer mix, lower masking effects, and keep subtitles enabled if offered |
| Settings seem to change after docking | Mode-specific viewing conditions | Recheck brightness, text readability, and audio after every switch between handheld, tabletop, and TV |
Three sensible starting profiles
Atmosphere-first
Keep the default brightness and visual effects, use subtitles at a comfortable size, and retain surround audio if your room supports it. Choose this profile when you can read dark scenes and movement causes no discomfort.
Readability-first
Raise brightness slightly, use larger high-contrast subtitles or a subtitle background when available, and reduce grain or blur if they obscure details. Keep the change limited enough that shadows still define the scene.
Comfort-first
Reduce camera shake, motion blur, grain, and intense flashes when those controls exist, then set a calmer audio level with subtitles enabled. This profile prioritizes visual comfort over preserving every cinematic effect.

What is and is not publicly documented
Confirmed Switch 2 facts are the digital release date of March 26, 2026, Fast Travel Games as publisher, the 14.7 GB listed download size, support for TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, one-player support on one system, the listed regional languages, and surround sound. Nintendo also documents the clay, 3D-scanned stop-motion presentation and the safety warning.
Nintendo does not publicly enumerate a complete Switch 2 graphics or accessibility menu, does not publish default brightness values, and does not provide a Switch 2 control-remapping map in the cited listing. Subtitle sizing documented for other versions should therefore be verified rather than assumed. The reliable method is to inspect the current build, test each change in the scene where you need it, and keep a separate adjustment in mind for each play mode.
