Growth and engagement helped platforms solve real problems when the internet was expanding: connecting people, helping them find information and filtering abundance. Konstantinos Komaitis argues that those measures no longer match the central challenge as well: people now need to decide which information deserves their trust. His essay asks whether the assumptions that made platforms successful still fit the digital environment they helped create.
This article is Part IV of a ten-part essay series on the platform economy. In “The Metric Is Not The Mission: The Digital Climate,” Konstantinos Komaitis, PhD, examines the gap between what platforms can readily measure and what people increasingly need from them.
Why growth and engagement once made sense
In an earlier phase of internet growth, the basic challenge was often discovery: more people were coming online, information was multiplying, and users needed ways to find relevant material. Measures such as growth, engagement, scale and network effects were not arbitrary in that setting. Connecting more people and filtering information could create genuine value.
Komaitis’s argument is not that these measures were always misguided. It is that a measure useful in one environment can become an inadequate guide when the environment changes.

From finding information to judging it
The essay describes a shift in the user’s problem. When information is abundant, discovery and filtering matter. But finding something is not the same as knowing whether it is reliable. The harder question, in Komaitis’s account, is increasingly which information deserves confidence and how people can exercise discernment.
That shift creates a mismatch: platforms remain oriented toward attention and relevance, which are comparatively measurable, while trust and reliability are harder to quantify. The essay argues that this difference matters because the objective a system can measure most easily is not necessarily the objective society most needs it to serve.

What the digital-climate analogy means
Komaitis compares attention to individual platform scandals with attention to individual weather disasters. Focusing on one storm at a time can obscure changes in the atmosphere that make certain storms more likely. Likewise, treating election interference, harmful content, privacy violations, harassment, polarization and deepfakes as separate malfunctions may distract from the wider conditions that allow recurring problems to emerge.
This is a rhetorical analogy about where attention should be directed, not a claim that social platforms and physical climate systems are scientifically interchangeable. Its point is to look beyond the latest incident and ask whether the surrounding digital environment is changing in ways that make such incidents more likely.

A system can work as designed and still be poorly matched
The essay’s diagnosis is structural rather than a claim that every platform or user behaves in a particular way. A system can operate according to its design and incentives while those objectives become poorly suited to the conditions around it. If measurable attention continues to guide platform decisions while trust and discernment become more pressing needs, the resulting friction cannot necessarily be explained as a string of isolated failures.
Komaitis also frames user resignation and institutional lag as parts of this wider picture. These are elements of his analysis, not findings presented as an empirical study establishing universal behavior.

What the essay does—and does not—prescribe
The article raises a question about whether platform business-model assumptions need rethinking. It does not establish a validated replacement metric, offer a tested remedy, or prove that one alternative would resolve the problems it describes. Its contribution is to challenge the assumption that continued success on familiar measures—growth, engagement and scale—necessarily means platforms are serving the needs of today’s digital environment.
The essay is by Konstantinos Komaitis, PhD, whom the page describes as a veteran of developing and analysing Internet policy in support of an open and global Internet. The series announcement says installments would appear twice weekly over five weeks and that a complete essay would later be assembled as a PDF; that announcement does not confirm that the PDF is available.
