Contemporary reports called them the first smartphones manufactured entirely in Africa, distinguishing the phones from devices assembled on the continent using imported components. That description refers to the reported work at Mara’s factory—not proof that every component or raw material came from Africa.
What was described as “made completely in Africa”?
Fast Company reported that Mara’s new Rwandan factory manufactured the phones “from the motherboards to the packaging.” Futurism made a similar distinction: phone assembly already took place in Egypt, Algeria and South Africa, but those facilities used parts imported from China and elsewhere.

In this account, the difference was the reported scope of production at Mara’s factory, extending beyond final assembly. The reports do not establish that every component, material or upstream manufacturing step originated in Africa. “Made completely in Africa” is therefore best understood as the launch-era description used for Mara’s manufacturing effort, not a verified claim about the origin of every part.
Fast Company’s October 9, 2019 report and Futurism’s October 11, 2019 report both presented the phones as a first. Those contemporaneous reports support what was claimed at launch; they do not independently establish a comprehensive historical first.

What the “first-ever” claim does—and does not—establish
- What the reports say: Mara launched the X and Z in Rwanda in 2019 and described factory production extending from motherboards through packaging.
- What distinguishes the claim: Contemporary coverage contrasted Mara’s reported manufacturing scope with other African phone plants that assembled devices from imported components.
- What remains unproven: The reports do not show that every part or raw material was African-origin, or independently verify that no earlier smartphone made in Africa existed.
- What is not established now: Current availability, pricing and compatible parts are not confirmed by these launch-era accounts.
