Road Conditions is a Telegram group that collects checkpoint, closure and road reports from across the West Bank. Anas Hattab started it in 2019, after night-time newspaper deliveries showed him how little current route information drivers had. According to WIRED’s October 8, 2026 profile by Lama Rabah, the group now has nearly 350,000 followers, more than a dozen volunteer moderators, and information that local radio stations, a West Bank routing system and a local navigation app draw on. The group’s value is speed and local knowledge. Its limits are that conditions can change within minutes and that no one can verify every report in real time.
Who started Road Conditions and why
In 2019, Hattab was 30 and worked as a digital designer at a newspaper in Ramallah. He also drove newspaper deliveries at night, travelling north through Nablus and Jenin to his home in Tulkarm. On those routes he met unpredictable checkpoints, raids, and detours around settlements. Mainstream navigation apps did not account for these conditions, and drivers had no shared place to warn one another. He created Road Conditions so drivers could report delays, closures, and the presence of soldiers or settlers.

How a report becomes a post
The group’s workflow changed as checkpoints multiplied and delays grew. Hattab closed the public chat and invited active contributors to moderate, and WIRED reports that more than a dozen volunteers now help run the feed. The process has three stages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Intake. Drivers send reports to the group, often with a photo or video.
- Verification. Moderators check the update by contacting people on the ground, comparing it with other local pages, or driving the route themselves.
- Pre-posting checks. Before a closure is posted, moderators establish the location, identify who can confirm it, and consider what alternative a driver might take.
From open chat to moderated feed
The open chat became hard to manage when reports surged. Hattab has described large spikes in messages when checkpoints lock down cities. Moderation is what allowed the group to keep up with that volume while holding posts to a standard of location and confirmation, though the profile makes clear that the standard is applied by people working under time pressure.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route

- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Photos, soldiers and personal risk
Images are part of the reporting, and Hattab has thought carefully about what they show. WIRED reports that he avoids posting pictures of military jeeps or individual soldiers. He describes one incident in which a soldier searched his phone after he had received many checkpoint photos. The profile presents this as part of the context in which the group operates, not as a claim about the wider policy of Israeli forces.
Reach and downstream use
WIRED reports that nearly 350,000 people follow Road Conditions. Its dispatches are used in hourly road segments by local radio stations. A routing system used by West Bank companies also draws on Hattab’s information, as does a local application called A Ween Rayeh (“Where Are You Heading?”). The app was launched in 2025 by computer engineers Musab Nuirat and Ahmed Gharib and aggregates data into a real-time traffic heat map. The profile says it relied on Hattab’s data. These are reported uses. They do not indicate a commercial endorsement or an official arrangement with the group.

The figures, and what they can and cannot show
Several numbers in WIRED’s coverage depend on how the data was gathered. The table below lists each figure with its source and its limits.

| Checkpoint delays up more than 50 percent since October 7, 2023 | Change in checkpoint delays | WIRED’s September investigation, as summarized in the October 2026 profile. WIRED found no official data on delays or opening status, so the analysis drew on Road Conditions updates. |
| About 77 hours per year lost by the average West Bank commuter | Time lost on roundabout routes that avoid checkpoints | WIRED’s own estimate, not an official statistic. The underlying data was scraped from Road Conditions updates. |
| Nearly 5,443 settler attacks in 2025; about 4,766 in the first eight months of 2026 | Settler attacks | Figures from the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, as reported by WIRED. These are not WIRED’s own counts. |
The delay and travel-time figures are therefore estimates built on the group’s own reports, not official measurements. Readers should treat them as evidence of a pattern, not as precise totals.

Where the information falls short
- Timeliness. A checkpoint can open, close or clear within minutes, so a report can be out of date by the time it is read.
- Verification. Moderators check what they can, but the profile says no one can verify every update in real time, and mistakes happen.
- Coverage. During lockdowns and surges, the volume of reports can outpace the group’s capacity to check them.
- Status. The feed is a community channel. It is not guaranteed to be complete and is not an official traffic service.
Hattab in his own words
WIRED attributes the following statements to Hattab.
- “Ten minutes is a long time.” He was describing how quickly road conditions can change.
- “I make sure not to show the military jeeps, not to show one soldier.” He was describing the care he takes with images posted to the group.
- “My point is not sales,” he said. “It’s Road Conditions.” He was explaining why he took a sales-representative job that put him on different roads.
- “You know how a taxi driver has souls with him in the car, and he has to drive carefully? Same principle.” He was describing his sense of responsibility to the people who rely on the group.
Using a community road channel sensibly
A post from Road Conditions is one input among several. Before acting on one, check when it was published, since a report from earlier in the day may no longer describe the road. Look for a named location and a stated basis for the report, such as a confirmation from another source. Where possible, compare it with a second source before changing a route. The profile does not present the group as a substitute for a driver’s own judgment at a checkpoint.
