The February 2019 headline referred to Kalashnikov’s display of a KUB-UAV model at the IDEX defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi. “Suicide drone” was headline language for a military loitering munition—a weapon that can search for a target before diving into it. The later ZALA Lancet was a separate system, presented at Army-2019 in June 2019.
What Kalashnikov showed in February 2019
The Washington Post reported on February 23, 2019, that Kalashnikov displayed a model of the KUB-UAV at IDEX in Abu Dhabi. That display—not the later Lancet—was the event behind the “maker of AK-47 rifles just unveiled a suicide drone” wording.

The KUB-UAV is a military weapon, not a consumer quadcopter. The more precise term is loitering munition: it carries an explosive payload, flies toward an area or target, and is intended to destroy itself on impact. The available report identifies the exhibition model but does not establish an independently tested range, speed, payload, cost or combat record for it.
Why the KUB-UAV and Lancet are often confused
Kalashnikov’s unmanned-weapons announcements followed one another, but the systems should not be treated as the same product.

|---|---|---|
| KUB-UAV | February 2019, IDEX, Abu Dhabi | The Washington Post reported a Kalashnikov display model. The report supplied no independently verified performance set. |
| ZALA Lancet | June 24, 2019, Army-2019 | ZALA said Kalashnikov presented the system after testing had been completed and described its components and headline specifications. |
| Lancet-1 and Lancet-3 | August 2019 description | Rostec described variants with differences in flight time and payload; its Lancet-3 figures were 40 minutes and 3 kilograms. |
| Lancet-E | August 2024, Army 2024 | Rostec said Rosoboronexport presented an export system built around a Z-16-E reconnaissance drone and two loitering munitions. |
What ZALA said about the Lancet
In its June 24, 2019 announcement, ZALA described the Lancet as a system combining a strike element with reconnaissance, navigation and communications modules. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent findings.
The same dated announcement reported a strike radius of up to 40 kilometres and a maximum takeoff weight of 12 kilograms. Both figures belong to the 2019 announcement and should not automatically be applied to every later Lancet variant.
Reported Lancet-3 figures
Rostec’s August 2019 article reported 40 minutes of flight time and a 3-kilogram payload for the Lancet-3. These are corporate-reported specifications from that period, not results from an independent test.

What changed with Lancet-E
Rostec’s August 2024 announcement described Lancet-E as an export version. Rather than presenting it as one drone alone, the announcement described a package containing:
- One Z-16-E reconnaissance drone;
- Item 51-E loitering munition; and
- Item 52-E loitering munition.
The announcement establishes the advertised composition of the export system. It does not, by itself, establish current customer deliveries, export approvals for a particular country, battlefield effectiveness or performance figures for each component.

“Suicide drone” and “kamikaze drone” are informal terms used in headlines and public discussion. They emphasize that the weapon is expended when it strikes. “Loitering munition” is the more useful technical description because it identifies the weapon’s intended operating concept without implying that it is a general-purpose aircraft or a civilian drone.

The KUB-UAV display also should not be presented as proof that Kalashnikov had introduced a new consumer-drone category. The systems in these announcements were military munitions promoted through defense exhibitions and state or company communications.

Bottom line
The headline’s “suicide drone” was the KUB-UAV model shown by Kalashnikov at IDEX in February 2019. The better-known Lancet was a different, later ZALA presentation in June 2019, with separately reported specifications and subsequent variants, including the Lancet-E export package announced in 2024.
