The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition brings a distinctly 2011 action RPG back to modern platforms, preserving its northern Middle-earth adventure and three-player co-op while adding some modern conveniences. It is most appealing to Tolkien fans, returning players and groups who enjoy straightforward action role-playing. The familiar setting and party combat have aged better than the repetitive fighting and uneven systems, and launch-period technical problems reported by reviewers make this a less convincing choice for anyone expecting a thoroughly rebuilt or trouble-free game.
Is War in the North Legacy Edition worth playing?
It can be, if the appeal is revisiting Middle-earth with friends rather than discovering a newly designed action RPG. The story runs parallel to Frodo and Sam’s journey: a separate Fellowship confronts Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron gathering forces in the North. You play as Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; or Farin, a Dwarven Champion. The official listings describe distinct combat roles, character progression through skills and equipment, familiar characters and locations, and the option to switch between the heroes. The strongest reasons to play are the Tolkien setting and cooperative party combat. The main reservation is that the underlying game remains largely the same as the 2011 release, so the combat loop and systems can feel dated rather than transformed. Nintendo Life reviewer Ethan Zack found the Switch 2 version repetitive, with systems that were difficult to parse and launch bugs. TechRadar reviewer Matt Evans likewise found repetitive combat and technical problems in his original Switch review. These are platform-specific reported experiences, not proof that every player will encounter the same faults.
What changed in the Legacy Edition?
Think of this as a modern-platform return, not a full remake. The original game launched in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Nintendo Life describes the Legacy Edition as sitting between a basic port and a full remaster, with the underlying game largely intact. GamesRadar+ also framed it as the return of an older action RPG. Nintendo Life review GamesRadar+
#1 Best Overall
The new edition does include conveniences noted by reviewers, but the specifics differ by platform and review. Zack highlights hot-swapping and gyro aiming in his North American Switch 2 review, captured docked. Evans reports autosaves and improved framerates in his review of the original Nintendo Switch version. Neither account supports treating every convenience or technical result as identical across platforms.
How do the reviews describe performance and bugs?
Switch 2: Nintendo Life
Ethan Zack reviewed the North American Switch 2 version and praised its setting and co-op, while criticizing repetitive play, unclear systems and launch bugs. He reported audio problems, performance dips, visual glitches, and a miniboss disappearing in a way that blocked progress. In his experience, the bug combined with the save system and forced a restart. These are his review findings, not a guarantee that all Switch 2 players will see the same problems. Switch: TechRadar
Matt Evans played the original Nintendo Switch version for 15 hours across handheld and TV modes. He found it diverting for fans of the original and players who enjoy simple action RPGs, but noted repetitive combat, a weak story, technical problems, and awkwardness around character swapping and inventory. His assessment concerns Switch, not Switch 2, and should not be treated as a controlled comparison between the two systems. Read the TechRadar review

Does it have co-op?
Yes. Official store descriptions support solo play as well as local split-screen and online co-op with up to two friends. PlayStation lists online play for up to three players and requires PS Plus for online multiplayer. Xbox says console online multiplayer requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription. The official descriptions establish co-op availability, but not cross-platform play. Do not assume friends on different systems can join the same session.

Overall, this is a welcome chance to revisit a relatively unusual Tolkien action RPG, but its appeal rests more on setting and co-op than on refreshed combat. Treat it as the old adventure made available again with some modern conveniences—not as a rebuilt game.
