Short answer: The Legacy Edition requires Windows 11 on a 64-bit system, DirectX 12, and 25 GB of free storage. The minimum tier calls for 8 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, and a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290X. The recommended tier doubles memory to 16 GB and moves to an Intel Core i5-12400F or Ryzen 5 5600X with a GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 6600.

Controller play is supported. Epic lists a gamepad as an input device, while SteamDB records full controller support and gamepad-preferred status for Steam. SteamDB also marks the game Verified on Steam Deck, although an external Bluetooth or USB controller can require manual selection from SteamOS’s Quick Access Menu.

What the PC requirements mean

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition launched on Steam on August 11, 2026. Aspyr publishes the same requirements on Steam and the Epic Games Store. They are vendor specifications, not independent frame-rate tests, so they identify the hardware tiers the publisher expects but do not promise a particular resolution, frame rate, or graphics preset.

Both tiers require Windows 11, a 64-bit processor and operating system, DirectX 12, and 25 GB of available storage. The recommended tier is substantially stronger in processing power, graphics capability, and memory, but it does not request additional disk space.

Minimum and recommended specifications

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 11; 64-bit processor and operating system Windows 11; 64-bit processor and operating system
Processor Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290X NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600
DirectX Version 12 Version 12
Storage 25 GB available space 25 GB available space

These figures appear in Aspyr’s Steam listing and matching Epic Games Store listing. The processor and graphics cards in each row are alternatives, not components that must be installed together.

How far apart are the two tiers?

  • Memory: the recommendation rises from 8 GB to 16 GB. A PC with 8 GB meets the published floor, while 16 GB leaves more room for Windows, launchers, voice chat, and background applications.
  • Processor: the minimum i5-6400/Ryzen 5 3600 pair is replaced by the newer i5-12400F/Ryzen 5 5600X pair in the recommended specification. A newer CPU can also help when several players, background tasks, or high simulation loads are present, but no independent CPU benchmark is published here.
  • Graphics: GTX 970/R9 290X is the minimum pair; RTX 2060/RX 6600 is the recommended pair. Matching or exceeding the recommended GPU is the sensible target if you want headroom for image quality, resolution, or future driver changes.
  • Storage: both tiers list 25 GB. Keep more free space than the stated requirement so Windows and the launcher can complete updates without filling the drive.

  1. Open Settings > System > About. Confirm that Windows 11 is installed and check System type for a 64-bit operating system. The same page shows the installed processor and RAM.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect the CPU, Memory, and GPU panels. If a system has more than one GPU, note which one games normally use.
  3. In File Explorer, open This PC and verify at least 25 GB of free space on the drive where the game will be installed. Leave additional working room for patches.
  4. Press Win + R, enter dxdiag, and select the System tab to verify the DirectX version. The Display tab identifies the active graphics adapter.

If one component is below minimum, the published requirements do not establish that the game will run acceptably. If every component meets minimum but falls short of recommended, treat the machine as a minimum-tier system rather than assuming recommended-quality performance.

Controller support on Steam and Epic

Storefront or platform Evidence Practical implication
Steam on Windows SteamDB records “Full Controller Support” and “Gamepad Preferred.” A controller is an intended input method, but the record does not guarantee every model, adapter, or wireless mode.
Epic Games Store on Windows Epic’s listing marks controller support and names “Gamepad” as an additional input device. Use a compatible gamepad recognized by Windows and verify the connection mode you intend to use.
Steam Deck/SteamOS SteamDB records the title as Verified and says all functionality is accessible with the default controller configuration. The built-in controls should be available with the default layout; external controllers may need manual activation.
DualSense SteamDB configuration metadata separately lists “DualSense Controllers (USB Only).” This is third-party metadata, not an Aspyr promise that every DualSense setup or wireless connection will work.

SteamDB’s controller categories and Deck status are secondary configuration records, not a substitute for testing your particular controller and connection. The official storefront pages do not name a required controller model.

Connecting a controller on Windows

  1. Choose the connection type. A USB cable is the simplest diagnostic path because it avoids Bluetooth pairing and battery issues. For wireless play, pair the controller in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device before launching the game.
  2. Confirm Windows sees it. Press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, and look for the controller in the Game Controllers panel. Use Properties to confirm that buttons and sticks register.
  3. Start the game from the storefront where it is installed. If you use Steam, open the game’s controller settings and check the active layout before launch. If you use Epic, confirm that the controller remains visible in Windows after the Epic launcher opens.
  4. Test in the title’s menus. Disconnect other gamepads temporarily if the wrong device becomes player one. Reconnect devices in the order you want them assigned for local co-op.

Because the published pages do not enumerate every controller family, adapter, or wireless protocol, compatibility should be treated as setup-dependent rather than universal.

Steam Deck and SteamOS details

SteamDB’s compatibility record marks the game Verified and reports that all functionality is accessible using the default controller configuration. The record was timestamped August 20, 2026, so a later game, SteamOS, or Proton update could change the result.

  • A selection of both Good and Evil army lists and unit profiles to unleash your collection into battle
  • Includes over 150 unit profiles and 46 army lists
  • Go to war with thematic armies to recreate your favourite moments from the movies

The same record warns that an external Bluetooth or USB controller may not become active automatically. If the game continues responding to the Deck’s built-in controls, open the Steam Deck Quick Access Menu, go to the controller section, and switch the active controller to the external device. This is a SteamOS input-selection issue, not evidence that the game lacks controller support.

Online and split-screen co-op

Both storefront descriptions advertise playing with up to two friends online or in split-screen co-op. Aspyr’s product description states: “Play with up to 2 friends online or in split-screen co-op.” That wording means a session can include the player plus as many as two friends; it does not specify that every combination of local and online players is available in every mode.

For a local session, connect and test each controller before entering co-op, then assign devices in the order the game displays them. For online play, make sure each participant is using the storefront and platform arrangement supported by the session and that every PC meets the game’s requirements. The cited listings do not publish a separate network-speed requirement.

Troubleshooting controller problems

The game does not detect a controller

  • Reconnect the device directly to the PC instead of through a hub, then verify it in joy.cpl.
  • Close other games or remapping utilities that may have claimed the controller, and relaunch the game after Windows recognizes it.
  • On Steam, review the game’s controller layout and active input device. On Epic, confirm the controller is visible to Windows before starting the launcher.
  • Try USB even if wireless is your preferred method. If USB works, the issue is likely pairing, battery, adapter, or wireless-mode related rather than a lack of in-game support.

The wrong controller controls player one

Disconnect unused gamepads, restart the game, and reconnect devices in the desired order. On Steam Deck, select the external device manually from the Quick Access Menu when SteamOS keeps the built-in controls active.

Input works in menus but not during play

Return to the controller layout, make sure the analog sticks and action buttons are assigned, and test with a default layout rather than a custom profile. A controller that fails in joy.cpl needs to be fixed at the Windows, cable, battery, or hardware level first.

Performance is poor despite meeting minimum

Meeting minimum specifications is not a measured performance guarantee. Close background applications, install current graphics drivers, confirm the game is using the intended GPU, and lower resolution or graphics options. If the system is close to the minimum CPU or GPU, moving toward the recommended i5-12400F/Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 2060/RX 6600, and 16 GB RAM provides more published headroom than changing the controller.

Which specification should you target?

Your situation Practical target
You only need to establish that the PC meets the publisher’s floor. Every minimum CPU, GPU, memory, OS, DirectX, and storage item must match or exceed the minimum row.
You want less risk from background applications and higher settings. Use the recommended CPU and GPU classes, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, and 25 GB plus update headroom.
You play on Steam Deck. Use the Verified default controller configuration, and be prepared to select an external controller manually.
You plan local co-op. Have the required number of working gamepads connected and tested before starting the session; no specific controller brand is required by the official listings.

The safest buying or upgrade decision is therefore a component-by-component comparison: Windows 11 and 64-bit support first, then CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX 12, and free disk space. Controller support is available on the listed PC storefronts, but individual model and wireless compatibility still depends on the device and connection path you use.
