For a sensible starting point, use your desktop display’s native resolution and borderless mode. On Steam Deck, start at 1280×800 in borderless mode. Then test the same repeatable scene while aiming for a stable 60 frames per second. This is a third-party baseline, not an official benchmark or a guaranteed best preset for every PC.
The Legacy Edition advertises 60-FPS gameplay, but the available evidence does not establish a universal frame rate, a 120-FPS guarantee, or consistent frame pacing across hardware, operating systems and scenes. Steam’s requirements indicate hardware eligibility; they do not promise a resolution, graphics preset, average FPS, minimum FPS or VRAM target.

What settings should you use first?
Begin with the least complicated configuration so that later changes are measurable. Hone’s August 31, 2026 guide recommends native desktop resolution and borderless mode, or 1280×800 on Steam Deck. Treat that recommendation as a starting point rather than a definitive optimization profile: the available guide content refers to observed Maximum and On choices but does not provide a complete, independently verified setting-by-setting matrix.

- Set the game to your monitor’s native output resolution.
- Choose borderless display mode.
- Leave other quality options at their existing values until you establish a baseline.
- Use one repeatable scene, such as the same area and camera movement, for every comparison.
- Check whether the game can hold your chosen target, beginning with 60 FPS rather than chasing a brief peak.
Steam Deck starting point
Use 1280×800 with borderless mode as the initial test configuration. The official Steam community page says the game is now Steam Deck Verified, but that status is a compatibility designation, not a measured promise of a particular frame rate or frame-time pattern. You can confirm the announcement and patch history on the official Steam community page.

How to establish a useful 60-FPS baseline
A repeatable baseline is more valuable than a random high reading. Record the display mode, output resolution, graphics settings, hardware, operating system, graphics driver and, on Linux or SteamOS, the Proton or other compatibility-layer version. Capture the same scene and camera path before and after each change.
- Start the game with native resolution on desktop, or 1280×800 on Deck, and borderless mode.
- Play the selected test scene long enough to include movement, combat and any loading transition that normally causes a hitch.
- Record the observed frame rate and visible stutter. If you use an overlay, note whether its number is an instantaneous reading, an average or a low percentile.
- Change only one graphics option, display setting or environment variable.
- Repeat the identical scene and compare the result with the baseline.
- Keep the change only if it improves the target you actually care about, such as steadier frame times or fewer drops, rather than a short-lived peak.
This method is general diagnostic practice, not a documented game-specific fix. It prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the cause of an improvement or a new problem.
What are the War in the North Legacy Edition PC requirements?
The following specifications are the Windows requirements listed by Steam and reproduced in Hone’s guide. They identify a minimum and recommended hardware tier, but Steam does not attach a resolution, preset, average or minimum FPS, VRAM requirement, driver version or frame-pacing target to either tier.
| Tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | DirectX | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 11, 64-bit | Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 8 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290X | Version 12 | 25 GB |
| Recommended | Windows 11, 64-bit | Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600 | Version 12 | 25 GB |
Meeting the recommended row does not mean 1080p/60, 1440p/60 or 4K/60 is guaranteed. It also cannot prove that replacing a graphics card will cure a particular hitch caused by a driver, compatibility layer, loading event or game-side issue. If your system is below the listed tier, the table is a useful eligibility comparison, not a prediction of your exact performance.

Can the game run at 60 FPS or higher on PC?
Aspyr advertises 60-FPS gameplay, as reported in Hone’s settings guide. That supports describing 60 FPS as an advertised capability, not as a measured result that every PC, scene or configuration will sustain. The reviewed material contains no controlled, named benchmark with averages or low-percentile results across a defined test system.
Why 100-plus FPS is not a safe target
The guide describes a brief result above 100 FPS as unstable rather than a dependable target. It treats 120 FPS as something to test on an individual system, not as a universal promise. A high instantaneous counter reading can coexist with dips during combat, traversal or loading, so evaluate consistency in the same repeatable scene.
What the user reports show
A Steam discussion opened on August 11, 2026 contains conflicting anecdotes. One Linux user reported drops to roughly 3–4 FPS on a Ryzen 7 3700X with a Radeon RX 6800 after trying several display modes and Proton versions. Another user described stutter on Windows, while a later Windows commenter reported no stutter at 144 FPS and suggested the game might have been patched. These are individual reports, not controlled comparisons; the thread does not establish a common cause or a universal fix. Read the discussion at Steam’s Game Stuttering thread.
Does the Legacy Edition change the performance question?
The Legacy Edition returned the game to Steam with the same War in the North action-RPG story rather than a new campaign or ground-up remake, according to the vendor coverage summarized by PC Gamer. Reported changes include hot-swappable characters, refined enemy-target locking, interface improvements, autosave changes and bug fixes. The return and feature context were reported on August 11, 2026 by PC Gamer.

What did Patch 1 fix?
The official Steam community page lists Patch 1 as live on September 15, 2026. Its notes report stability fixes, multiplayer-progression fixes, cinematics and asset-loading fixes, loading and inventory optimizations, and a borderless-window correction. The borderless fix makes pending resolution changes revert to the previous resolution when they expire. The announcement also states, in its exact wording, “Now Steam Deck Verified.” See the full notes at Steam’s official community page.
Patch notes describe the developer’s changes; they do not establish that every stutter, low-FPS event or Linux compatibility problem has been resolved. If a problem remains after updating, document the environment instead of assuming that one patch should behave identically on every system.
How to troubleshoot stutter and severe drops
Use a controlled sequence so that you can separate a game setting from an operating-system or driver issue. There is no documented single fix supported by the conflicting reports, so avoid changing several variables at once.

1. Confirm the exact environment
- Write down Windows or Linux/SteamOS and its version.
- Record the CPU, GPU, system memory and display resolution.
- Record the graphics-driver version.
- On Linux or SteamOS, record the Proton or other compatibility-layer version.
- Note whether the game is fullscreen, windowed or borderless and whether an external monitor is involved.
2. Reproduce the symptom
Use the same save, location, camera movement and combat sequence. Note whether the problem is a sustained low frame rate, a short hitch during loading, shader compilation, a resolution change or a repeating frame-time spike. A three-second dip and a constant 3–4 FPS failure require different investigation.
3. Change one variable
Test one display mode, resolution, graphics option, driver setting or compatibility-layer version at a time. Keep a short log with the old value, new value and result. If the result is worse, return to the last known baseline before testing the next variable.
4. Check the borderless behavior
Because Patch 1 specifically mentions a borderless-window resolution bug, retest after updating and verify that a temporary resolution change returns to the prior resolution when it expires. This confirms the patch behavior; it does not guarantee that unrelated frame-time issues are fixed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should Steam Deck owners interpret “Verified”?
Steam Deck Verified indicates that the game passed Valve’s compatibility criteria at the time of the status, and the official Patch 1 announcement reports that status. It does not state a fixed refresh rate, a locked 60 FPS, a particular graphics preset or identical frame pacing in every area. Start at 1280×800 and borderless mode, then use the repeatable-scene method. If you test another resolution or frame-rate cap, change one item and record the result.
For Linux desktop users, Proton version is part of the configuration. The mixed Steam reports show why a result from one Radeon card and Proton setup cannot be generalized to all Linux systems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should you upgrade to the recommended GPU?
The recommended graphics row names an RTX 2060 or RX 6600. Those models are useful reference points when comparing a system below the listed tier, but the requirements do not demonstrate that either card will deliver a chosen FPS at a chosen resolution. Before buying, compare the actual GPU performance tier with your target, then verify power-supply capacity, case clearance, display connectors and CPU balance.
- Define the target first: stable 60 FPS, a higher refresh rate or simply fewer severe drops.
- Match the target to the resolution you will use, because the requirements table does not specify one.
- Check the entire system, not only the GPU: processor, memory, power supply, cooling and driver support all matter.
- Use your own repeatable scene after the upgrade to determine whether the limiting factor changed.
A graphics-card purchase is therefore a conditional hardware decision, not a guaranteed remedy for stutter. If your current card already exceeds the listed tier, investigate display mode, drivers, compatibility-layer behavior and patch state before assuming more GPU power is the answer.
A practical settings checklist
- Update to the current game patch shown in Steam.
- Start at native desktop resolution, or 1280×800 on Steam Deck.
- Use borderless mode.
- Test a consistent scene before changing quality options.
- Use 60 FPS as the first stability target; treat 120 FPS as an experiment.
- Change one setting or environment variable per test.
- Log hardware and software details with every result.
- Do not treat Steam’s minimum or recommended rows as FPS benchmarks.
The Bottom Line
Use native resolution and borderless mode on desktop, or 1280×800 on Steam Deck, then measure a repeatable scene against a 60-FPS target. The game advertises 60-FPS capability, but neither Steam’s requirements nor the available reports guarantee a particular frame rate. Patch 1 improves stability and reports Steam Deck Verified status, while mixed Windows and Linux anecdotes make system-specific testing essential.
