The PlayStation Store describes the Legacy Edition as an action role-playing game. Its story follows a new Fellowship defending the North against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron, while Frodo and Samwise travel toward Mount Doom.

Push Square characterizes the 2011 original as a linear hack-and-slash dungeon crawler and notes its mixed reviews and bugs.
