The publisher’s core description is the safer way to identify the edition: three hardbacks, Alan Lee artwork, an illustrated slipcase, sprayed edges, art cards and foldout maps.

Nothing in the publisher’s listed contents identifies The Hobbit as part of this ISBN. If a marketplace photograph shows four books, or the listing names The Hobbit, check that it is not using the ISBN for a different set.
Why the phrase “box set” causes confusion
Publishers and retailers use similar promotional wording for several products. The number of books is the quickest first check, but it is not enough on its own: one four-volume set contains The Hobbit, while another four-volume set contains a companion book instead. Illustrator and cover treatment provide the next level of confirmation.

These are different products, not interchangeable names for one package. Use the ISBN printed in the listing or on the back of the box to confirm which contents you are buying. Similar phrases such as “illustrated,” “gift set” and “boxed set” do not establish the volume count or the illustrator.

This is the four-book Alan Lee set. Its defining difference is the inclusion of The Hobbit; the three Lord of the Rings volumes are joined by a separate Hobbit volume. The listing describes Alan Lee’s watercolour illustrations throughout. Choose this edition when reading order, rather than premium 2024 packaging, is the priority and you want Bilbo’s story in the same box.

The 60th Anniversary package also has four hardbacks, but its fourth volume is The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion, not The Hobbit. Its visual identity comes from Tolkien’s unused 1950s jacket designs, reworked for the anniversary edition. A listing that says “four volumes” and mentions a companion book is describing this set, even if it also uses the broad phrase “Lord of the Rings box set.”
Single-volume illustrated edition (ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6)
This edition puts the complete novel in one hardback. HarperCollins’s 2021 listing specifies 30 colour illustrations, maps and sketches by Tolkien himself. That makes it materially different from an Alan Lee set: the artwork is by the author, and the format is one volume rather than three or four. It is not a box set, so a listing that shows one book should not be evaluated against the deluxe boxed sets on volume count.

Film tie-in gift set (ISBN 978-0-00-880239-4)
The film tie-in gift set contains four books covering The Hobbit and the complete Lord of the Rings work. Its covers use film images. The movie presentation is therefore the key identifying feature; it should not be confused with the 2024 Alan Lee set, even when both listings describe four books or use “gift set” language.

Alan Lee illustrations versus Tolkien’s own artwork
Illustrator credit is one of the most useful checks on a listing. Alan Lee’s watercolour work appears in the 2024 three-volume deluxe set and in the separate four-book Hobbit-plus-Lord of the Rings set. Those are both illustrated editions, but only the first has the 2024 combination of sprayed edges, removable art cards and two foldout maps stated in the publisher description.
The single-volume ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6 instead uses Tolkien’s own illustrations, maps and sketches. “Illustrated” alone does not tell you who made the art. Look for “Alan Lee” or “J. R. R. Tolkien” in the listing and compare that credit with the ISBN.

- Count the books shown and named. Three books usually indicates the LOTR-only 2024 deluxe format; four books require a second check because the extra volume may be The Hobbit or the Reader’s Companion.
- Read the included-book line. Confirm whether it explicitly names The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion, or only the three LOTR titles.

Choose the single volume for a one-book library footprint
The Tolkien-illustrated ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6 edition keeps the complete text together and supplies 30 colour illustrations, maps and sketches by Tolkien. It sacrifices the separate-volume layout and boxed-set extras in exchange for a single hardback.
