Iron Road, Hinterland’s new Survival Expansion for The Long Dark, launches in Early Access for Survival Mode on October 27, 2026. It moves the game beyond Great Bear Island to Cauldron Island, a five-island caldera built around more than 100 kilometres of railway, a hidden prototype train and a mystery tied to the McLeod family.
When does Iron Road release?
The Long Dark: Iron Road releases on October 27, 2026, as digital Early Access DLC sold through Steam. The launch version is for Survival Mode. Because it is Early Access, the October release is the first stage of a larger expansion rather than the complete Cauldron Island experience.

What is Cauldron Island?
Cauldron Island is a volcanic island chain introduced by Iron Road. Hinterland describes five islands in the caldera:

A hydraulic train bridge connects the islands. At launch, players begin on Anna Island, where more than 30 kilometres of railroad are available. Later Early Access updates are planned to open the remaining islands, eventually extending the setting to more than 100 kilometres of railway.

How the train changes survival
The expansion’s central vehicle is a Prototype Train that has remained hidden for a century. Players must locate it, repair it, activate it and upgrade its components before using it to travel along the railway. The train is designed specifically for Cauldron Island; it is not a replacement for ordinary travel across every region of the base game.
Railway infrastructure at launch
Anna Island’s launch infrastructure includes train repair sheds, fuel and water stations, track switches, track sections and surrounding exploration areas. These facilities turn maintenance, fuel management and route planning into part of the survival loop rather than treating the train as a simple fast-travel menu.
Boat connection from Great Bear
The Fulmar Autopilot Boat provides the launch connection between Desolation Point on Great Bear Island and Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. That route is how players reach the new region from the existing world.

What is the Iron Road story?
Cauldron Island’s history centers on industrialist Hamish McLeod, who used its properties in an industrial plan powered by whale oil. The enterprise failed and its history was erased. Hamish’s great-granddaughter, Alice McLeod, arrives to investigate the family legacy; the player continues that investigation while exploring the railway and the abandoned industrial sites.
Hinterland frames the main objective as restoring and activating the century-old train, then travelling deep into the forgotten caldera to uncover the mystery of McLeod’s failed empire. The story therefore unfolds through movement, repairs and exploration instead of being presented as a detached quest hub.
What is included at launch?
| Element | Launch status |
|---|---|
| Cauldron Island | Access begins on Anna Island |
| Railway | More than 30 kilometres available on Anna; more than 100 kilometres planned across the full chain |
| Islands | Five named islands planned; later islands unlock as Early Access develops |
| Prototype Train | Find, repair, activate, upgrade and operate it on Cauldron Island |
| Great Bear connection | Fulmar Autopilot Boat from Desolation Point to Port Remnant |
| Facilities | Repair sheds, fuel and water stations, switches and track sections |
| Survival content | New clothing, food, tools, safehouse customization items and train cosmetics |
| Wildlife and hazards | Stronger Aurora effects and a new Harpoon hunting option |
Some Iron Road systems and items are intended to return to the base game and Great Bear Island. The train itself remains a Cauldron Island feature, so players should distinguish portable additions from region-specific infrastructure.

How Iron Road differs from Tales from the Far Territory
Both expansions extend The Long Dark, but Iron Road is defined by its transport system and staged development. Its setting is a linked island chain with a railway that players restore and operate. Its launch map is deliberately smaller than the eventual route because Anna Island opens first and other islands arrive through Early Access updates.

What “Early Access” means for buyers
The October 27 build should be treated as the starting release. The confirmed launch scope is Anna Island and its available railway, while the other islands are planned additions. Features, balance and the order in which areas open can change as development continues. The expansion is therefore best suited to players comfortable with a growing Survival Mode experience rather than anyone expecting the entire five-island chain on day one.
Is Iron Road a physical product?
The confirmed product is digital Early Access DLC distributed through Steam. There is no confirmed physical edition, guide, accessory or model kit associated with the expansion in the announced material.
