The 1994 Street Fighter earned a lasting critical backlash, while 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li failed with critics and audiences. Capcom and Legendary’s third attempt, scheduled for October 16, 2026, has a more focused premise and major franchise support—but it cannot be called a success before release.
Why the Street Fighter movie curse exists
There have been two earlier Hollywood live-action adaptations: Street Fighter in 1994 and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009. Both damaged the property’s reputation, creating the “curse” label used by fans and entertainment coverage.

The pattern is unusually easy to document. The first film became notorious for its reviews, and the second performed even worse by the available critical and box-office measures. That history means the 2026 production is judged against more than ordinary video-game adaptation expectations: it must demonstrate that the characters, tournament structure and tone can work in a live-action feature.

What happened to the 1994 film?
The first Hollywood live-action adaptation
The 1994 movie was the first Hollywood attempt to turn Street Fighter into a live-action feature. Film historian Leonard Maltin later recorded an especially severe assessment: “The 1994 picture was one of the worst movies ever inspired by a video game.” That judgment helped define the film’s legacy even though the franchise itself remained popular in games.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes 26 fighters and 20 dynamic stages from Years 1 & 2 content.
- Unlock Outfit 1 Colors 3–10 and access full base game content.
- Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive modes: Gyro Battle, Calorie Contest & more.
- Play using any control style—Classic, Modern, or Dynamic on Joy-Con.
- Supports local wireless, online multiplayer, and Tabletop Mode for portable play.
The available record does not establish a detailed, scene-by-scene measure of its fidelity to the game’s tournament and character framework. What is clear is that the adaptation became the baseline example of how a successful fighting game could be poorly received when transferred to film.
Was the 2009 Chun-Li movie really that bad?
The critical record
Yes. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is documented as both a critical and commercial failure. Rotten Tomatoes recorded only 3% positive reviews from 59 critics, while Metacritic listed a score of 17 out of 100. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus called it “The combination of a shallow plot and miscast performers” and described it as “a perfectly forgettable video game adaptation.”
The financial result
The film grossed $12.8 million worldwide against a reported $50 million production budget. That total was far below the budget before marketing and distribution costs, making the sequel-like attempt a serious commercial setback as well as a critical one.
How the three films compare

| Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | Centered on Chun-Li; the cited record does not establish a full comparison with the game’s tournament structure. | 3% positive from 59 Rotten Tomatoes critics; 17/100 on Metacritic. | $12.8 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. | Second Hollywood live-action adaptation. |

What the 2026 Street Fighter movie is about
The official premise
The new story is set in 1993. Ryu and Ken Masters are estranged when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy then forces the two fighters to confront each other and the histories that separated them.
This setup uses the franchise’s most recognizable competition format while keeping its three best-known characters at the center. It also gives the film a single narrative engine—the tournament and the conspiracy—instead of treating the game’s roster as a collection of disconnected cameos.

Cast and release plan
Capcom’s announcement named Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. The announced ensemble also includes Joe Anoai, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Jason Momoa, among others.
Capcom said filming had commenced in 2025 and listed October 16, 2026, as the theatrical release date. Because the film has not opened in the documented information, there is no verified audience response, review average or box-office result to use as evidence that the curse has ended.
Can the 2026 film finally get it right?
It has a plausible route to improvement, but the evidence is prospective rather than conclusive. The film’s announced strengths are:
- A clear central trio: Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li carry the premise rather than serving as interchangeable fighters.
- A recognizable structure: the World Warrior Tournament supplies an immediately legible goal for viewers who know the games.
- Franchise-level backing: Capcom and Legendary are jointly financing the production, aligning the game owner with the studio making the adaptation.
- A defined period setting: placing the story in 1993 can connect it to the era and mythology associated with the original games.
Those choices address the basic adaptation problem, but they do not guarantee a good film. Casting, choreography, screenplay quality, visual effects, pacing and the handling of the conspiracy will determine whether the movie earns strong reviews and repeat viewing. Until critics and audiences see the finished feature, calling it a curse-breaker would be speculation.

The movie failures did not erase the game franchise’s commercial reach. Capcom reported more than 49 million cumulative Street Fighter units shipped worldwide as of December 31, 2022. The company has said that film and television adaptations are intended to broaden awareness beyond existing players and increase the value of its intellectual property.
Rank #3
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
That installed audience gives the 2026 film a substantial starting point, but it also raises expectations. Long-time players will look for recognizable relationships, fighting styles and tournament stakes, while newcomers need a coherent story that does not require knowledge of decades of game lore.
Merchandise and the audience beyond opening weekend
On February 2, 2026, Hasbro announced a licensing partnership with Legendary for Street Fighter action figures, toys and collectibles timed to the film’s announced October 16 theatrical release. The announcement confirms the product category and movie tie-in, but it does not establish final retail assortments, launch timing or any affiliate terms.
The clearest current game entry is Street Fighter 6. Capcom lists it for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. That active release gives audiences a way to engage with the franchise while the film campaign builds, and it provides the studio with characters and visual references that are familiar to current players.
What would count as breaking the curse?
A successful release would need more than a recognizable cast or a profitable opening weekend. The useful tests are whether critics find the story and performances convincing, whether players recognize the tournament and character relationships without the film becoming inaccessible to newcomers, and whether audience interest holds after the initial fan rush.
For now, the accurate verdict is narrower: the 2026 production is a serious third attempt with a tournament-centered premise, prominent casting and coordinated franchise support. The live-action Street Fighter curse remains unbroken until the finished film proves otherwise.
