What happened in The Last of Us before Part II?
At the end of the first game, Joel finds Ellie in a Salt Lake City hospital run by the Fireflies. They plan to operate on her in an attempt to develop a cure, but the procedure would kill her. Joel rescues Ellie, killing the surgeon and other Fireflies, then tells her the Fireflies could not make a cure. Why does Abby kill Joel?
Years later, Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson, Wyoming. Abby and her companions find Joel, and Abby kills him while Ellie is forced to watch. Abby is the daughter of the Firefly surgeon Joel killed at the hospital. Ellie leaves Jackson for Seattle with Dina, determined to find Abby and take revenge. What happens during Ellie’s three days in Seattle?
Ellie searches for Abby across Seattle, first with Dina and later with Jesse. They encounter the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites, two groups fighting for control of the city. Ellie kills several members of Abby’s circle as her search unfolds; the story gives the people on both sides their own relationships and reasons for fighting rather than presenting the conflict as a simple hero-versus-villain struggle.

At a theater, Abby confronts Ellie and her companions. She kills Jesse and wounds Tommy, then overpowers Ellie and Dina. Lev intervenes before Abby kills Dina. Abby lets Ellie live, warning her to stay away.
Why does the game switch to Abby’s perspective?
After that confrontation, the story rewinds to Abby’s three days in Seattle. The player sees her connections with Owen, Mel and Manny, her place in the WLF, and her growing bond with Lev and Yara, Seraphite siblings. The shift gives context to the people Ellie has been pursuing: Abby and her companions see Ellie’s side as a threat, just as Ellie sees theirs as one. The two storylines overlap, and Abby’s account eventually returns to the theater confrontation.

What happens after Seattle?
After the Seattle events, Ellie is living with Dina and their baby, JJ, at a farmhouse. She remains troubled by trauma and memories of Joel. Tommy arrives with information that Abby may be in Santa Barbara. Ellie leaves to pursue her again, despite Dina’s plea that she stay.
In Santa Barbara, Abby and Lev have been captured by the Rattlers. Ellie finds them and cuts them down from the stakes where they have been left. She still demands a final fight with Abby. During the struggle, Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers. Ellie stops before killing Abby and lets her leave with Lev.

How does The Last of Us Part II end?
A final flashback shows Ellie telling Joel that she wanted to try to forgive him. When Ellie returns to the farmhouse, Dina and JJ are gone. Ellie tries to play Joel’s guitar but can no longer fret it normally with her injured hand. She leaves the guitar behind and walks away. The game does not specify where she goes next.
The events are clear, but their meaning is open to interpretation. GameSpot reads the ending as Ellie relinquishing revenge and anger, while emphasizing the losses caused by her pursuit. Naughty Dog’s launch post, written by the game’s author Neil Druckmann, describes its focus as “a character driven story, focusing on flawed individuals and the difficult choices that they make.” Read the launch post.

Which version is the sequel, and what is its age rating?
The original The Last of Us Part II was released for PS4. Naughty Dog later announced The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PS5, describing the campaign alongside technical improvements, new modes, behind-the-scenes features, DualSense features and additional accessibility options. Those announcements establish the editions’ original platform context, not their current store availability; check the relevant store listing for current platform and edition details. PlayStation’s game page and Naughty Dog’s Remastered announcement provide the platform information.
