Bruce Straley, director of the original The Last of Us, said before the 2013 launch: “Nobody’s making that game and we have that opportunity.” He was not claiming that no one had made a zombie game, survival-horror game or serious story. He meant that the team was pursuing a particular combination: grounded survival horror, intimate character development, gameplay tied to story conflict and morally difficult choices that the player had to inhabit.

Who said “nobody’s making that game”?

The line belongs to Bruce Straley, the game director, rather than to an anonymous joint statement by Straley and Neil Druckmann. Druckmann was the creative director. Their conversation was recorded for pre-release coverage roughly a week before the original game launched on PlayStation 3 in 2013.

Druckmann expressed the same ambition in different words: “Let’s make the game we really want to play. Let’s make the game that’s not out there but we really want to play.” The pair were describing a creative gap as they saw it at the time, not announcing that every ingredient of the project had been invented from scratch.

What the directors meant by “that game”

A character-centered survival-horror story

Straley said, “Nobody had really done that in video games yet,” referring to using survival horror as a setting in which to develop characters. The intended focus was not simply surviving monsters. The danger, scarcity and isolation were meant to reveal who Joel and Ellie were and how their relationship changed.

A grounded alternative to cartoonish zombie spectacle

The directors acknowledged that zombies and horror already had a long history in games. Their distinction was tonal and structural. They wanted to ground the genre and move away from what Straley described as cartoonish B-movie treatments that were common in the period. Violence, fear and loss were supposed to carry personal consequences rather than function only as spectacle.

Story conflict expressed through play

The project aimed to connect what the script was about with what the player was doing. Stealth, limited supplies, combat and the vulnerability of the protagonists were intended to make the themes of dependence, fear and compromise tangible. This is why the claim concerns a blend and an execution, not a single feature that had never appeared in another game.

How Joel and Ellie embodied the idea

Joel’s progression

Druckmann described Joel’s arc as a movement from risking his life, to risking his friends, to risking his soul by potentially damning humanity. That progression gives the phrase “morally difficult decisions” a specific meaning: the stakes expand from personal survival to the lives of people close to him and finally to a choice with implications for everyone.

Ellie’s coming-of-age story

Ellie’s story was conceived as a coming-of-age arc. Her relationship with Joel changes both characters, so the journey is not merely an escort scenario or a sequence of infected encounters. The evolving partnership is the narrative engine that makes the survival setting intimate.

Was The Last of Us the first serious zombie story?

No. Straley and Druckmann were not claiming absolute priority for serious storytelling, zombies or survival horror. They acknowledged influences from other media and from Naughty Dog’s own Uncharted work. The narrower claim was that few games had combined a grounded survival-horror setting with sustained character development, story-driven gameplay conflict and player-embodied moral pressure in the way they intended.

That distinction also explains why “nobody” should be read as conversational shorthand for an opportunity the team believed was open, not as a literal survey proving that no comparable game existed anywhere.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

What made the proposed combination different?

Comparison axis What Straley and Druckmann were emphasizing What the statement did not claim
Narrative intimacy Survival horror used to develop Joel and Ellie and transform their relationship. That no earlier game had developed characters seriously.
Gameplay and moral choice Player actions and survival pressures should communicate the characters’ compromises. That moral decisions had never appeared in games.
Tone A grounded, emotionally serious alternative to cartoonish B-movie zombie treatment. That every earlier zombie game was superficial or comedic.
Player embodiment The player should feel involved in difficult decisions rather than observe them only in cutscenes. That the game invented interactive storytelling or stealth.

Why the 2013 context matters

The quote came during publicity for the original PlayStation 3 release, before players had experienced the finished work. It therefore records an intention and a design argument, not a later claim that the game had objectively surpassed every predecessor. Contemporary coverage identified Straley and Druckmann in their respective director roles and presented the project as a PlayStation 3 game approaching launch.

Reading the quote in that context avoids two common errors. First, it should not be recast as Druckmann alone saying that nobody made games like The Last of Us; the most direct wording is Straley’s. Second, it should not be inflated into a “first ever” declaration. The evidence is creator testimony about a specific creative combination.
