The rumored iPhone SE 4 was not delayed into an uncertain future. Apple delivered the expected redesign on February 19, 2025, but released it as the iPhone 16e. It replaced the third-generation iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch OLED phone featuring Face ID, USB-C, an A18 chip, Apple Intelligence and a 48MP camera.
As of August 18, 2026, the current entry-level equivalent is the iPhone 17e. The useful conclusion for buyers is simple: do not wait for an “iPhone SE 4” launch. That name never became official.
What the iPhone SE 4 rumor predicted
Before Apple’s announcement, “iPhone SE 4” was the shorthand used for a long-awaited replacement for the third-generation iPhone SE. Rumor reports described a modern full-screen design rather than another phone built around the iPhone 8 chassis.
- A 6.1-inch OLED display instead of a 4.7-inch LCD
- Face ID instead of Touch ID and a Home button
- USB-C instead of Lightning
- A newer A-series processor and at least 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence
- A single 48MP rear camera
- Apple’s first internally designed 5G modem
- A body broadly related to newer full-screen iPhones, with some reports pointing to an iPhone 14-style design
Those were unconfirmed expectations, not an Apple specification sheet. The eventual product matched many of the broad predictions, but its name, camera layout and other details differed from a standard iPhone 16.

Why a redesign was overdue
The third-generation iPhone SE launched on March 8, 2022, with a body that still had the defining weaknesses of the iPhone 8 era: thick bezels, a 4.7-inch screen, a Home button, Touch ID, an LCD panel and a Lightning connector. A 2025 replacement would have followed the roughly three-year gap between the second- and third-generation SE models.
A newer enclosure could give Apple a larger OLED screen and current internal hardware while reusing an established manufacturing design. For SE owners, however, the change also meant giving up the unusually small physical size that made the phone attractive.
Was the launch actually delayed?
Not in any publicly confirmed Apple sense. January 2025 reports disagreed about the timing: some expected an early-year announcement, while others placed availability as late as April. That is evidence of uncertain rumor schedules, not an announced Apple delay.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| March 8, 2022 | Apple announced the third-generation iPhone SE. |
| January 10, 2025 | Reports discussed competing launch windows for its successor. |
| February 19, 2025 | Apple announced the iPhone 16e. |
| February 21, 2025 | Preorders began, according to contemporary coverage. |
| February 28, 2025 | The iPhone 16e went on sale. |
| March 2026 | The iPhone 17e became available as the next entry-level model. |
Apple therefore did not “delay the iPhone SE 4” as an official product. It changed the product’s branding and launched the redesign in February 2025.

Apple described the 16e as “a new member of the iPhone 16 family,” not as a fourth-generation SE. It started at $599 in the United States, compared with the third-generation SE’s final $429 starting price. The redesign was substantially more modern, but it was not a same-price replacement.

Display and authentication
The 16e uses a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display in an edge-to-edge body. The Home button is gone, and Face ID operates through the TrueDepth camera system.
Chip, modem and Apple Intelligence
An A18 chip brings Apple Intelligence support to the lower-priced tier. The phone also introduced Apple’s C1, described by Apple as its first cellular modem designed in-house. That does not mean Apple immediately stopped using outside modem suppliers in every product.
USB-C and camera
USB-C replaces Lightning. The rear camera is a single 48MP system with a 2x optical-quality crop option. It is not a separate telephoto lens and does not provide an ultrawide camera.
Battery claim
Apple claimed up to 12 additional hours of video playback compared with all generations of iPhone SE. That is an Apple controlled-test result, not a guarantee of identical real-world battery life.
Apple’s announcement is available in the Apple Newsroom.

Why Apple used the name “iPhone 16e”
The name placed the phone inside the iPhone 16 generation and emphasized its current A18 platform rather than its SE heritage. It also distinguished a major chassis and software change from a routine SE refresh.
Some reporting suggested Apple might establish an annual “e” tier. The arrival of the iPhone 17e supports that interpretation, but Apple has not publicly promised a permanent yearly schedule. The important confirmed fact is that the SE name was retired from the current entry-level line.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What the iPhone 16e did not include
- No Dynamic Island; it retained a notch-style front design.
- No ultrawide rear camera or second rear lens.
- No Camera Control button.
- Less advanced display and camera hardware than the standard iPhone 16.
Calling it simply an “iPhone 16-like” phone misses those differences. It modernized the front, connector and internals without matching the full iPhone 16 feature set.

Which option makes sense for an SE owner?
Buy the iPhone 17e
This is the clearest choice for someone wanting the lowest-priced current iPhone with a modern screen, USB-C, Apple Intelligence and 256GB of starting storage.
Consider a discounted iPhone 16e
The 16e can make sense when remaining or refurbished stock is meaningfully cheaper. At the same or nearly the same price, the 17e is more compelling because it has the newer A19 chip and twice the 16e’s original base storage.
Keep or buy a used iPhone SE 3
A used SE 3 remains the cheapest route into iOS, but buyers accept its small LCD, bezels, Home button, Lightning port and lack of Apple Intelligence.
Spend more on the iPhone 17
Apple’s U.S. buying page lists the iPhone 17 from $799 for 256GB and $999 for 512GB. The extra $200 buys a more advanced display and camera system, making it the better fit for buyers who need features the 17e omits.
The 17e is a poor fit if you require an ultrawide camera, ProMotion or another high-refresh-rate display, Dynamic Island, Camera Control, pro-level photo and video tools, the smallest possible phone, or faster wired transfer than USB 2. Depending on region and carrier, physical SIM support may also differ; Apple’s U.S. listings are eSIM-based.
Costs beyond the advertised price
- Carrier financing may require activation or a qualifying plan.
- Trade-in credit depends on model and condition; use Apple’s Trade In tool for an estimate.
- Monthly payments are financing offers, not automatic discounts.
- Sales tax and AppleCare+ are separate. Apple’s purchase flow displayed AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year until canceled; coverage and pricing vary by country.
- iCloud+ can help with backups and photos. Apple listed U.S. plans from $0.99 per month in its 2025 announcement, but current tiers should be checked on Apple’s iCloud+ page.
The bottom line for the old headline
The rumored redesign did arrive in 2025, but “iPhone SE 4” was never its official name. Apple replaced the SE with the iPhone 16e, then followed it with the iPhone 17e in 2026. If you are deciding what to buy now, compare the current 17e with the standard iPhone 17 and treat any remaining 16e or SE stock strictly as a price-driven alternative.
