The biggest iPhone Pro Max battery gains come from a short list of controls: check Battery usage to find the real drain, lower excessive brightness, shorten Auto-Lock, use Low Power Mode when you need immediate runtime, enable Adaptive Power when your model supports it, and use Charge Limit or Optimised Battery Charging to slow long-term battery wear. No setting produces a guaranteed percentage improvement: results vary with signal strength, screen brightness, apps, temperature, battery age and your iOS version.
Start with Battery usage before changing settings
A battery setting is useful only if it addresses the cause of your drain. Open Settings > Battery and review the daily battery graph, then inspect App and System Activity Usage. Look for the labels Apple uses to explain unusual consumption:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Background Activity: an app was doing work while you were not actively using it.
- No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal: the phone used extra power searching for or maintaining a weak cellular connection.
- Location: an app or system service was using location data.
- Streaming, video or camera use: sustained screen, processor, speaker and network activity can dominate a day’s usage.
Tap an app in the list to see whether its battery use occurred on screen or in the background. If one app accounts for an unusually large share, change that app’s notification, location, refresh or download behavior before applying system-wide restrictions. A weak signal can also explain rapid drain even when no single app looks excessive; Wi-Fi or a location with better reception can help more than repeatedly toggling settings.

| Find the actual culprit | Battery usage details and system activity labels | Requires checking patterns over a day or more |
Use Low Power Mode for immediate endurance
How to turn it on
- On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- On models or iOS releases that show the control directly, open Settings > Battery and turn on Low Power Mode.
- For faster access, add Low Power Mode to Control Center through Settings > Control Center, then tap its control when needed.
Low Power Mode reduces brightness, sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, turns off Background App Refresh and email fetch, pauses some iCloud Photos activity and automatic downloads, and reduces visual effects. These changes explain why it can extend runtime without you individually finding every setting.
What you give up
On ProMotion iPhones, Apple says Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second. Scrolling and animations can therefore feel less fluid than usual. Background mail and app updates may wait until you open the app, and some photo syncing or downloads may pause. Treat it as a deliberate runtime trade-off: enable it for travel, long days, emergencies or heavy navigation rather than leaving it on permanently if you rely on immediate background updates.
Low Power Mode switches off automatically after the iPhone charges above 80 percent. If you want the restrictions again after charging, turn it back on manually.

Enable Adaptive Power when your model supports it
Apple’s current Power Modes guidance lists Adaptive Power for iPhone 15 Pro or later, but the supported-model list and default behavior can change with an iOS release. Check your own menu rather than assuming every Pro Max has it.

- Open Settings > Battery > Power Mode.
- Look for Adaptive Power and read the description shown for your iPhone and iOS version.
- Turn it on if available, then monitor Battery usage over normal days.
Adaptive Power can lower screen brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments. On supported devices it can automatically turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. Because Apple may change availability or defaults by model and software version, the switch appearing in your menu is the reliable test. If it is absent, use Low Power Mode and the individual controls below.
Reduce the display’s constant power demand
Set brightness for the room
High brightness is one of the most persistent battery loads, especially on a large Pro Max display. Open Settings > Display & Brightness and move the brightness slider down until text remains comfortable to read. You can also adjust it from Control Center. Automatic Brightness can help adapt to changing light; find it under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.
Do not treat the dimmest possible screen as the goal. A readable, moderately bright display is more practical than repeatedly raising brightness because the screen is hard to see. Check brightness outdoors, indoors and at night, since the setting that is excessive in a dark room may be necessary in sunlight.
Shorten Auto-Lock
Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter interval, such as 30 seconds or one minute, if the screen often remains on after you stop using it. A shorter timer saves power whenever you forget to lock the phone. If 30 seconds interrupts reading or recipes, choose one or two minutes and rely on the side button when you finish.

Control background work without breaking useful notifications
Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh lets apps update content before you open them. If Battery usage identifies a high background consumer, open Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can turn the feature off globally, restrict it to Wi-Fi, or disable it only for apps that do not need preloaded content. Messaging, navigation or work apps may be more useful with it enabled; games, shopping apps and rarely used services often are not.
Mail fetch and automatic downloads
Low Power Mode turns off email fetch and pauses some automatic downloads. Outside Low Power Mode, review mail accounts under Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data on current iOS versions; older releases may place Fetch New Data directly under Settings > Mail. Push delivers mail as it arrives where supported, while scheduled fetch checks periodically. Less frequent fetching reduces background work but delays messages.
For downloads and updates, inspect Settings > App Store and disable automatic downloads you do not need immediately. If you use iCloud Photos, a pause can postpone synchronization rather than delete photos; allow the phone to finish later while connected to power and Wi-Fi.

Notifications and location
Every notification can wake the display or trigger network activity. Open Settings > Notifications and disable alerts for apps whose updates are not time-sensitive. For location-heavy apps, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select the app and choose an access level that matches its purpose. Navigation and safety tools may need continuous access; a coupon or game usually does not.

Choose a Charge Limit
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging. The Charge Limit can be selected from 80 percent to 100 percent in five-percent increments. A lower limit can reduce battery wear when you charge frequently or leave the phone connected for long periods. It does not create more energy in the battery; it reduces the time the cell spends at a very high state of charge.
The phone may occasionally charge to 100 percent even when a lower limit is selected. Apple uses those full charges to keep the battery-percentage estimate accurate, so this behavior is expected rather than a failed limit.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Optimised Battery Charging at a 100-percent limit
When Charge Limit is set to 100 percent, Optimised Battery Charging is available in the same Charging area. The iPhone learns your daily charging routine and can hold the charge around 80 percent when it expects to remain connected for an extended period, finishing near the time it predicts you normally unplug.
Best Value
This option suits people who need a full battery at a regular departure time but do not want the phone sitting at 100 percent for hours. It needs a consistent routine to learn; irregular schedules may produce less noticeable delays.
Keep the phone cool while it charges
Apple says iPhone performs best in an ambient temperature of 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F). Temperatures above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Avoid charging in a hot car, direct sun, on a heat-trapping surface or under bedding. If the phone becomes hot, move it to a cooler environment and stop demanding tasks such as gaming or 4K video recording until its temperature falls.
Heat matters more for lifespan than whether you occasionally charge to 100 percent. Keep ventilation around the phone and charger, and do not leave a charging iPhone in a parked vehicle. A cool, ordinary charging location is more valuable than chasing a particular cable or charging ritual.
Pick a setup for your situation
When you need the most runtime today
- Open Settings > Battery and identify an unusually active app or weak-signal condition.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
- Lower brightness to a comfortable level and set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds or one minute.
- Pause unnecessary navigation, video streaming, camera use and downloads.
- Use Wi-Fi where cellular reception is poor, if a trusted network is available.
For a balanced everyday setup
- Leave Low Power Mode off when you need normal refresh rate and background updates.
- Use moderate brightness, Auto-Brightness if it suits your lighting, and a short practical Auto-Lock interval.
- Disable Background App Refresh, notifications or location access only for apps that show meaningful background activity.
- Enable Adaptive Power if it appears on your iPhone 15 Pro or later and you accept its automatic adjustments.
For long-term battery care
- Choose a Charge Limit below 100 percent if your routine keeps the phone plugged in or you can comfortably start the day below full charge.
- If you need 100 percent regularly, leave Optimised Battery Charging enabled.
- Keep charging temperatures moderate, especially during hot weather or intensive use.
- Review Battery Health periodically instead of expecting settings to reverse chemical aging.
When settings cannot solve the problem
iPhone batteries are consumable components. Settings can reduce demand, but they cannot restore capacity lost through chemical aging. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the status shows Service, Apple recommends considering battery replacement to restore full performance and capacity. A service warning is a hardware-health decision, not a signal to keep disabling more features.
If drain began suddenly, compare Battery usage before and after a recent app installation or iOS update, check for persistent Low Signal or No Mobile Coverage entries, and confirm the phone is not routinely overheating. If one app remains abnormal after its settings are restricted and the signal is good, update or remove that app and contact its developer. If the entire phone loses charge rapidly while idle and Battery Health reports Service, arrange battery service rather than relying on Low Power Mode.
Important model and iOS caveats
Menu names are not identical on every iPhone Pro Max. Low Power Mode is nested under Power Mode on iPhone 15 and later, while older iOS releases may show it directly under Battery. Charge Limit is an iPhone 15-and-later feature. Adaptive Power is listed for iPhone 15 Pro or later in Apple’s current guidance, but both availability and defaults can change with software updates. If a control described here is missing, install the latest iOS your model supports and recheck the Battery menus; do not assume the absence means the phone is defective.
The practical order remains consistent: diagnose in Battery usage, reduce brightness and screen-on time, use Low Power Mode for urgent endurance, enable Adaptive Power where offered, then manage charging limits and heat for lifespan. Apple does not publish a universal percentage savings for each control because workload, reception, temperature and battery condition change the result.
