The rumored iPhone 17 Slim did become a real product, but Apple launched it as iPhone Air—not iPhone Ultra. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, as a new iPhone family member focused on extreme thinness and lightness. The “Slim” reports were directionally right about a thin replacement for the Plus model, but wrong about the final name and uncertain on several specifications.
What “iPhone 17 Slim” was supposed to be
“iPhone 17 Slim” was an unofficial pre-launch name for a very thin iPhone expected to replace the iPhone 17 Plus. Reports described a new form factor with a larger-than-standard display, a design distinct from both the regular iPhone and Pro models, and pricing that could range from Plus-like to higher than the Pro Max.
Those reports were not an Apple announcement. Display estimates ranged from about 6.1 to 6.6 inches, while coverage disagreed about the frame material, camera layout, chip and price. See the contemporary reporting from MacRumors, Tom’s Guide and Macworld.
Why the rumor became linked to “iPhone Ultra”
Apple already uses Ultra branding for products such as Apple Watch, and commentators have long imagined an iPhone positioned above the Pro Max. A radical new design with a possible premium price therefore looked like a candidate for that role.
#1 Best Overall
- Universal Carrier Compatibility: This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.)
- Carrier Verification Required: Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility
- Simple Activation Process: When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service
- Package Contents: The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable
- Battery Health Guarantee: Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%
That was an inference, not evidence of an Apple plan. A higher price or unusual shape does not automatically make a phone an “Ultra”; the label would imply Apple’s highest overall capability and positioning.
What Apple actually launched
Apple announced iPhone Air on September 9, 2025, with initial availability beginning September 19 in its first markets. Apple describes it as the thinnest iPhone ever and a new member of the iPhone family. Its confirmed specifications are:

Is iPhone Air an Ultra in everything but name?
There is a reasonable argument for calling Air “Ultra-like,” but it remains analysis rather than an Apple classification.
Why the theory is plausible
- Its $999 starting price is $200 above the standard iPhone 17.
- It introduces a major industrial-design change and a titanium frame.
- It uses the A19 Pro chip rather than the standard A19.
- It occupies a new position instead of simply repeating an existing screen-size tier.
Why it is not a true top-end Ultra
- Its official rear-camera system has one 48MP Fusion Main camera, while the iPhone 17 includes Main and Ultra Wide cameras.
- Apple’s Pro and Pro Max models remain the flagship performance-and-camera choices.
- Apple named it “Air,” emphasizing thinness and portability rather than maximum capability.
- Apple never used “Ultra” branding for the product.
Apple’s own launch language centers on thinness, lightness and efficiency, not an ultimate iPhone tier. Read the announcement.

What happened to the iPhone 17 Plus?
Pre-launch reporting expected Apple to remove the Plus model and replace it with an ultra-thin device. Apple’s announced lineup—iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max—supports that broad replacement theory, even though Apple presented Air as a new family member rather than calling it a Plus successor.

The early reports were therefore useful for identifying a thin, new model, but not reliable as a final product sheet. Older articles that still call it “iPhone 17 Slim” are describing pre-September 9, 2025 coverage.

The separate iPhone Ultra rumor
Current rumor coverage treats a future iPhone Ultra as a different concept, often associated with Apple’s first foldable iPhone and a possible 2026 timeframe. The name, design, specifications, price and launch date remain unconfirmed. Reports do not establish that Apple will use “Ultra” at all. Tom’s Guide’s roundup is rumor reporting, not an Apple product announcement.
Who should consider iPhone Air?
- Thinness and comfort first: Its 5.6mm titanium design is the central reason to choose it.
- A larger display without the Pro Max proposition: Air has a 6.5-inch screen.
- Pro-level chip performance: It includes A19 Pro, although a premium chip alone does not make it an Ultra.
- Single-camera users: The 48MP Fusion Main camera may be sufficient if an Ultra Wide camera is not essential.
Before buying, check real-world battery testing, case and screen-protection options, and repair costs. Apple’s launch materials do not establish comparative battery endurance against every other iPhone.
Who should choose something else or wait?
- Camera-first buyers: The standard iPhone 17 already includes Main and Ultra Wide cameras, while Pro models are Apple’s higher-end camera choices.
- Value-focused buyers: iPhone 17 starts at $799 in the U.S., compared with Air’s $999.
- Buyers seeking Apple’s absolute top tier: Air’s design priority is thinness, not the broadest camera system.
- Readers waiting for a foldable or true Ultra: Waiting means accepting unconfirmed timing, pricing and specifications.
Official product information is available on Apple’s iPhone Air page and iPhone 17 store page. Apple’s buying and trade-in page lists current offers, which can change by region and date.
Bottom line
The iPhone 17 Slim rumor was partly right: Apple did introduce a dramatically thinner model in place of the expected Plus slot. But the finished product is iPhone Air, announced on September 9, 2025, and it is not Apple’s first iPhone Ultra. Air is a premium thin-and-light iPhone with an A19 Pro chip, but the separate Ultra idea—often linked to a future foldable—remains unconfirmed.
