“The Internet Runs on Cats and Porn” is a memorable description of online culture, not a measured breakdown of global internet traffic. Available figures do not establish what share of internet activity is cat content or adult pornography, or prove that either category is growing. What they do show is that overall traffic is rising and generative AI is becoming more visible—changes that could reshape how online images and video are made, without proving that the internet is about to get “cattier and pornier.”
What does internet traffic data actually measure?
“Internet traffic” can mean the volume of data crossing a network, visits to websites, time spent viewing, or the number of posts and files in a category. Those measures are not interchangeable. A network can carry more data because people stream more video, for example, without any evidence that a particular kind of video accounts for the increase.

Cloudflare reported that global traffic observed through its network grew 19% year over year in 2025. In its preceding annual review, the company reported 17.2% growth for 2024. These figures describe Cloudflare’s network observations, not a census of every internet connection or a breakdown by content category. Cloudflare’s 2025 internet trends and its 2024 year in review do not identify cats or pornography as shares of that traffic.

More traffic overall does not mean everyone is online in the same way. The World Bank reported total data traffic per capita in 2023 of 1,400 GB in high-income countries, 400 GB in upper-middle-income countries, 100 GB in lower-middle-income countries, and 5 GB in low-income countries. These are income-group averages for data traffic, not measures of individual viewing habits or content preferences. The World Bank’s Digital Progress and Trends Report 2025 shows how sharply usage differs across these groups.

AI is more visible, but that does not prove the forecast
Cloudflare listed ChatGPT at the top of its generative AI category in its 2025 trends. That is a ranking within a category tracked through Cloudflare’s network, not a measure of how much of the internet is AI-generated or how much of global use is devoted to AI.
Adoption also varies substantially by income group. In April 2025, the World Bank reported that 24% of internet users in high-income countries used ChatGPT, compared with 5.8% in upper-middle-income countries, 4.7% in lower-middle-income countries, and 0.7% in low-income countries. The denominator is internet users in each group during that period, not all people worldwide.

Generative tools make it possible to create or alter images and video, including depictions of cats and sexual content. That is a plausible reason to expect more synthetic media in some corners of the web, but it is not evidence that cat content or lawful adult pornography is increasing as a share of all online activity. A platform ranking, a national adoption rate, and a count of synthetic-media incidents each answer a different question.

What synthetic-media risk figures do—and do not—show
Two recent measures help illustrate why a clear denominator matters. They document specific kinds of risk, but neither is a count of all sexual content online.

- Media-reported AI incidents: The OECD reported that synthetic media accounted for over 14% of AI incidents and hazards reported by media and captured in its dataset in the third quarter of 2025. That share was 2.5 times its 2022 level. It describes the composition of that dataset, not the share of AI output or internet content that is synthetic media. See the OECD report on media-reported AI incidents and hazards.
- AI-generated child sexual abuse material: The Internet Watch Foundation assessed 3,443 AI-generated videos showing photorealistic child sexual abuse in 2025, among 63,682 criminal videos it assessed. These are the organization’s assessment counts, not an estimate of all such material online. This category is child sexual abuse material; it must not be treated as a proxy for lawful adult pornography. See the IWF’s 2025 AI-generated video findings.
Why pornography studies cannot settle the global share
A 2021 study, Understanding web pornography usage from traffic analysis, examines traffic to pornography portals and user behavior within its study scope. Portal traffic can reveal patterns among the sites and users analyzed, but it is not a census of all pornography across the internet, all platforms where sexual material appears, or all internet use. It also cannot be directly compared with network-wide traffic totals unless the measures, populations, and time periods align. The study’s methods and findings should be read within those limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, is the internet about to get cattier and pornier?
It may be tempting to infer that from the growth of total traffic and the rising visibility of generative AI, but the available measures do not establish it. The cited sources provide no comparable global figures for the share of internet activity attributable to cat content and adult pornography, and no consistent trend showing that both are increasing. The International Telecommunication Union’s Facts and Figures 2024 adds context on global connectivity, but does not supply that content breakdown either.

- Top-Tier Dual Interactive Fun: Qraxond's new indoor cat toy has dual motors, controlling random rotation of butterfly and plush tail swing rod accessories, bringing fun, exciting play for kittens and adult cats. Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
- 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
- Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Right after the play session ends, it switches directly to touch-sensitive standby mode, where the purple indicator light flashes every 20 seconds. Simply tap again to reactivate it for another 5-minute cycle. This smart loop ensures your cat gets sufficient exercise and prevents overstimulation
- Large Rechargeable Battery: Enjoy long-lasting play with the built-in 2500mAh battery. It charges fully in just 2.5 hours via the included USB cable (use a 5V adapter only). The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
- Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves
The careful conclusion is narrower: traffic observed by Cloudflare grew in 2025, AI is a prominent internet category in its rankings, and synthetic-media risks are documented in specific incident and content-assessment datasets. Whether cats and adult pornography are taking up more of the internet remains unmeasured by these sources.
