There is no single official answer to the greatest PlayStation game of every era. For a consistent starting point, this list uses Sony’s Japan-and-Asia player-voted generation awards for PS1 through PS4, then Sony’s latest cited PS5 game poll for a current-generation pick. That produces five choices: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Elden Ring and Ghost of Yōtei. The first four won Sony’s 2024 PlayStation Generations Awards; Ghost of Yōtei won Platinum for Best PS5 Game in Sony’s 2025 annual poll. These are informed, evidence-based picks—not a universal ranking.
How this list defines a PlayStation era
“Era” means each numbered PlayStation home console: PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5. Handheld systems are outside this list. The method is deliberately consistent where the evidence allows it: Sony’s 2024 PlayStation Generations Awards supply the PS1–PS4 winners, and Sony’s 2025 PlayStation Blog Game of the Year poll supplies a current PS5 pick.

The methods are not identical. Sony says its 2024 generation awards were selected by users in Japan and Asia from games that had previously won a PlayStation Partner Award. They are not an unrestricted worldwide ballot of every game released for each console. Sony’s PS5 result is an annual game poll, not an all-time generation award. Those boundaries matter when interpreting “greatest.”

Why these picks—and what their awards do not prove
PS1: Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII is the PS1 generation award winner in Sony’s Japan-and-Asia poll. That makes it a strong representative choice for this list, while the award’s preselected pool and regional voter base mean it should not be mistaken for a vote of every PlayStation player worldwide. Sony’s Classics Catalog editorial also highlights legacy games including Resident Evil Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon and Tekken 2, showing that interest in revisiting PS1-era titles extends beyond one award result. Catalog availability can vary by region and date. Generations Award results · Classics Catalog editorial.

PS2: Final Fantasy X
Sony’s generation award names Final Fantasy X as its PS2 winner. It is a player-voted selection through the same Japan-and-Asia award framework, rather than a claim that every player would put it above the console’s other defining games.
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots took Sony’s PS3 generation award. As with the other historical winners, the result records the preference of eligible voters in that award—not a comprehensive ranking across all PS3 releases.

PS4: Elden Ring
Elden Ring won Sony’s PS4 generation award. A separate Sony poll gives useful context for how different the results can be when the question changes: in Sony’s Game of the Decade vote, The Last of Us received Platinum, while God of War and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received Gold and Silver. Its published top 20 also included Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4. A decade-scale poll and a generation award have different time windows and eligibility, so the results need not match. Sony’s Game of the Decade results.
PS5: Ghost of Yōtei
Ghost of Yōtei won Platinum for Best PS5 Game in Sony’s 2025 annual poll. Sony Interactive Entertainment reported nearly 1.5 million votes across all 19 award categories; that is the poll’s overall turnout, not a vote total for Ghost of Yōtei or any one category. In the results post, Gillen McAllister, Manager, Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Today, we reveal how your votes shaped the PlayStation Blog Game of the Year awards for 2025.” The poll makes Ghost of Yōtei a grounded current-generation choice, but an annual award cannot settle which game will ultimately define a generation that is still underway. Why other award lists point to different answers
“Best PlayStation game” changes meaning with the scope of a poll. Sony’s 2020 annual awards named The Last of Us Part II PS4 Game of the Year and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 Game of the Year. Those are year-specific winners, not generation champions. Sony’s decade poll instead compared games across a longer period, while its 2024 awards asked users to select among previously recognized titles for individual PlayStation generations. Each is valid evidence for its own question, not a substitute for the others. Sony’s 2020 award results.
Reviewer-curated lists are a different kind of evidence again. TechRadar’s 2026 recommendations page reflects its staff’s reviews and includes games with differing platform availability; it is useful as a current editorial snapshot, not a formal PlayStation award or definitive all-time ranking. Finding the original games to play
If you want to try the PS1 pick, check the edition carefully: a modern Final Fantasy VII remake is not the original PS1 game. Sony’s Classics Catalog editorial is one place to see legacy games it has chosen to spotlight, but it does not establish availability in every region. For physical copies, verify the console platform and whether a listing is an original, remaster or remake before buying; no particular retailer’s stock, price, condition or regional availability is established here.
