What does the “1 in 10” figure measure?
In a survey of 5,119 U.S. adults conducted February 17–23, 2026, Pew Research Center found that 10% said they ever use AI chatbots for emotional support or advice. Four percent said they use them for companionship. Those are the measured categories; neither is a measure of prophecy or spiritual belief. Pew Research Center’s report provides the survey details.
So the headline’s “reviving prophecy” is an analogy, not a description of what one in ten Americans reported doing. It does not establish that people consult ChatGPT to predict the future, regard it as divine, or follow it as a religious authority.
Why can a chatbot seem oracular?
Webb Keane and Ambuj Tewari, University of Michigan professors, argue that opacity may help explain why people experience AI answers as authoritative. A language model’s underlying operations include additions, multiplications, and simple mathematical functions. But those operations occur at enormous scale, using parameters learned from data, and the resulting answers can be difficult to explain—even when a model’s weights are available.

That difficulty can make an answer feel as if it came from beyond ordinary judgment. This is an interpretation of how people may perceive a system, not proof that opacity causes that response or that the system has hidden insight. The authors put the boundary plainly: “Our argument is not that ChatGPT is the new Delphic oracle, or that most people believe AI is divine.” Their essay, republished by Fortune from The Conversation, compares the experience of seeking guidance from AI with varied traditions including the Delphic oracle, I Ching divination, Ram Shalaka, and Christian bibliomancy. These are comparisons in the human search for guidance from enigmatic sources—not evidence that AI is religious or supernatural.
What kind of advice are people asking AI for?
Fortune summarizes a National Bureau of Economic Research study of 1.1 million ChatGPT conversations, reporting that 49% of messages involved seeking information or advice. That figure concerns messages in the study, not the share of people who use ChatGPT for advice; Fortune’s account does not state the study year. The essay gives examples of moral questions people might pose, such as “Is it OK to lie to protect someone’s feelings?” and “Exploding a nuclear bomb to save your child.” These are illustrative examples, not survey responses or representative prompts.

The gap between asking for help and treating an answer as authoritative is important. A chatbot can supply a fluent response to a moral dilemma, but fluency alone does not make that response wise, reliable, or binding. The cited figures describe use and message content; they do not show how much users trust the answers or what decisions they make as a result.
Could AI become a moral authority?
A 2021 example shows that designers have worried about this possibility. Ask Delphi, an AI-based website built to answer ethical questions, reportedly received 3 million queries in a few weeks. Its designers said they did not intend the system to be a moral authority, while acknowledging concern that users might treat it as one. GeekWire reported the launch and query volume.

That episode does not prove that users generally regard AI as an oracle. It does illustrate a design tension: a tool can be intended as a prompt for reflection yet received as a source of verdicts. The same caution applies to contemporary chatbots, whose answers can sound decisive even when the underlying question is contested or the response is wrong.

Fortune also points to Anthropic’s Claude 4 system card in connection with a machine-to-machine conversation that reportedly developed spiritual, metaphysical, or poetic themes, which the essay calls a “spiritual bliss” attractor. Anthropic’s system card is the primary source for that material. The episode concerns reported conversation patterns; it does not establish that a model has spiritual experience, religious belief, or supernatural knowledge.

When readers ask whether AI can give spiritual advice, the careful answer is that a chatbot can generate language about spiritual subjects, just as it can discuss moral or personal ones. The cited evidence does not show that it has spiritual insight or that its answers should be treated as guidance from a sacred source.

How to use AI advice without mistaking it for prophecy
- Separate a useful prompt from a final answer. Treat a chatbot’s response as material to examine, not an authoritative verdict on a moral, personal, or spiritual decision.
- Ask what supports the answer. Request evidence, assumptions, and alternative views, then check consequential factual claims against reliable sources.
- Use human judgment where stakes are high. A chatbot cannot replace qualified professional advice or the people who understand the circumstances and consequences of a decision.
- Notice confidence without confusing it for knowledge. A polished answer may still be incomplete, mistaken, or poorly suited to the situation.
