Googlebooks have begun reaching stores, and Chrome Unboxed’s October 5, 2026, first impressions offer an early look at both the hardware and Googlebook OS. Robby Payne’s initial hands-on was with the ASUS Googlebook 14, not the full launch lineup. He liked much of the laptop’s design and feel, but found the new operating system a genuine adjustment—and had one clear hardware reservation: its 1080p webcam.
What is the Googlebook platform?
Google describes Googlebook OS as a new laptop platform built on the Android technology stack, with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. Android-phone integration and Gemini Intelligence are also central to Google’s positioning. That makes Googlebook more than a cosmetic update to ChromeOS, but Google’s description of the platform should be distinguished from what one reviewer experienced during a brief first session.

Payne says the difference became apparent after signing in. In his initial use, window management, multitasking, file handling, local AI integration and native Android apps involved new workflows. He found the experience exciting but somewhat overwhelming. As someone who had used a Chromebook full-time for more than a decade, he also encountered expectations that were not met on day one. He stresses that this was only the beginning of his time with the system.
What did the ASUS Googlebook 14 feel like?
The device Payne used was the ASUS Googlebook 14, model family CX9406CAA. ASUS identifies Googlebook OS as its operating system. Payne’s first impressions of the hardware were broadly positive: he describes the chassis as light yet rigid, and praises the 14-inch OLED display’s brightness, color and anti-glare treatment. He also liked the keyboard response, haptic trackpad and speakers.

Those are subjective observations from short initial use, not standardized measurements. Payne says he had seen no stutter or hesitation during that time, but that is not a benchmark or a finding about every Googlebook model. His main complaint was the 1080p webcam, which he felt was disappointing for the $1,299 price he cited for the ASUS at launch. That figure is Payne’s October 2026 account, not a guarantee of the current price, configuration or availability in every market.
Which manufacturers and models are available at launch?
Google’s September 21, 2026, announcement named five initial hardware partners. The ASUS laptop in Payne’s article is one example, not a proxy for the entire range.

Google said devices would reach shelves starting October 4, 2026, in the United States, followed by October 5 in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Google’s launch overview gives figures for the lineup, not independent measurements of the ASUS model Payne used. Google says dedicated NPUs can deliver over 45 TOPS, and publishes battery-life figures of up to 14 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of web browsing. These are vendor capability and battery claims; Payne did not report testing them. They should not be read as guaranteed results for every configuration or as a substitute for model-specific independent testing.

Who is Googlebook for—and what is still unknown?
Payne’s article is explicitly an early first-impressions piece, not a comprehensive review. He notes that the review units had only just arrived and that the team would spend more time with them before publishing full reviews. As he put it: “We don’t believe in rushing out reviews after 48 hours with a completely new platform.” The initial article therefore gives a useful sense of his first reactions, but it cannot settle longer-term questions about battery life, performance under sustained workloads, compatibility or the experience across different devices.
Google says Googlebook OS devices will receive regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years. Its ChromeOS support FAQ also says the 2026 launch is intended for personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. That makes the current launch a less straightforward fit for schools or organizations that need centrally managed fleets. The launch does not establish whether existing Chromebooks can upgrade, nor does it mean ChromeOS is being discontinued.
