The Galaxy Z Fold8’s unfolded 4:3 inner display makes a natural fit for Nintendo DS emulation: hold the phone in portrait orientation and the two game screens can sit one above the other. Android Authority reviewer Hadlee Simons found that layout comfortable for games including Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Trauma Surgeon. But the Fold8 is not a universal DS player: games that depend on button inputs were less successful in Simons’s experience, and the phone does not support Samsung’s S Pen.
Why the Fold8’s inner screen suits DS games
A Nintendo DS presents two screens in a vertical arrangement. Unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 4:3 inner display, while its cover display is 10:16. The larger inner screen’s shape makes it practical to stack the two emulated DS screens in portrait orientation, rather than shrinking them into a cramped side-by-side layout. Samsung lists these display proportions in its Galaxy Z Fold8 product information and 2026 product materials.

That fit is more than a theoretical advantage: in a hands-on review, Android Authority’s Hadlee Simons said the stacked screens did not feel cramped and that Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Trauma Surgeon felt at home on the wide Fold. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a test of every game or a measured comparison against other phones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere the experience falls short
Button-heavy games may be less comfortable
Simons also found that games requiring button inputs did not work as well on the Fold8. The observation matters because a good screen layout does not by itself solve the control problem: the DS library includes games that rely on frequent button presses. The review does not establish which games are affected or whether a particular controller would improve the experience, so treat this as a caution rather than a compatibility verdict. Read the Android Authority hands-on review for the reviewer’s account.

It does not support Samsung’s S Pen
Do not buy or bring an S Pen expecting it to work as a Fold8 stylus. Samsung’s US product page says the phone does not support S Pen, and Android Central explains that the device lacks the digitizer layer needed for Samsung’s proprietary pen input. That limits options for games where precise stylus interaction is central; it does not establish that every touch-focused DS game is unusable. See Samsung’s product information and Android Central’s explanation of S Pen support.
The hinge is not an adjustable gaming stand
Samsung says the hinge is designed for fully open or fully closed use and that the Fold8 does not support FlexMode. Do not assume you can prop it securely at arbitrary angles for a tabletop play setup; the supported arrangement described here is the unfolded phone held open.

Choose an emulator for the system you want to play
The screen arrangement does not change which consoles an emulator supports. DraStic’s FAQ describes it as a Nintendo DS emulator, not an emulator for 3DS or 2DS. A Fold8 demonstration or discussion that combines “DS/3DS” should not be taken as evidence that one DS app runs both systems. DraStic also says GPU speed makes little difference to DS rendering in its app, while multi-threaded rendering can introduce graphical glitches or instability. Those statements apply to DraStic, not every emulator. See the DraStic FAQ.
What battery and performance figures do—and do not—tell you
Samsung advertises a 4,800 mAh battery and up to 26 hours of continuous playback. The 26-hour figure is a manufacturer playback claim, not an estimate of Nintendo DS emulation runtime; the available sources do not establish a DS-specific battery result. Details appear in Samsung Mobile Press’s 2026 Fold8 feature overview.

Android Authority reported 46–49% stability across three GPU stress tests. That figure describes those stress tests, not DS compatibility, gameplay frame rate, or the likelihood that DraStic will throttle. DraStic says GPU speed has little effect on DS rendering in its app, so the stress-test result should not be treated as a prediction of DS play. The sources do not establish sustained heat or comfort during long emulation sessions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the Fold8 for DS emulation?
- A promising fit: You value a large unfolded display that can show the two DS screens stacked, and the games you want to play work well with your preferred touch or control setup.
- Think carefully first: Your favorite games depend on frequent physical-button inputs, or stylus precision is essential. The review flags button-driven play as a weaker point, and Samsung does not support S Pen on the phone.
- Check the system requirement: If you want 3DS or 2DS games, DraStic is not the answer; its stated scope is Nintendo DS.
- Weigh the price against other uses: Android Authority cited a $1,899.99 MSRP in its 2026 review-period coverage. That is not a current local-price check; confirm the price and availability where you live, and consider whether the Fold8’s everyday foldable-phone uses justify its cost for you.
The Fold8’s strongest case for DS emulation is its screen geometry, backed by a positive hands-on account for two named games. The evidence does not establish that it is the best phone for every DS player, nor does it provide a complete comparison with dedicated handhelds. For a purchase decision, judge the games you actually want to play, their control needs, and the phone’s cost—not display shape alone.
