If returning to an iPhone feels like a downgrade, the reason is often workflow rather than speed, cameras or build quality. Four Android capabilities stand out for people who use their phone as a multitasking tool, a lightweight computer, an open software platform and a file manager: split-screen or floating windows, desktop-style operation, installation sources beyond the default store, and deeper folder-level file handling.
None of these makes Android universally better. Their value depends on what you do every day, which Android manufacturer and model you use, and where you live. iPhone still supports useful multitasking such as Picture in Picture, and iOS 26 adds more Home Screen and Lock Screen customization. The comparison below focuses on the moments when an Android workflow feels harder to reproduce after switching back.

Why these four features feel like a downgrade
The feeling usually appears when a familiar task gains an extra handoff. On Android, you may keep a document and notes visible together, connect a phone to a monitor and work in resizable windows, install a utility from a developer repository, or move an entire folder between phone and computer. On iPhone, an equivalent task may still be possible, but through a different app, a cloud service, a share sheet or a narrower multitasking mode.

Someone who researches while writing, manages downloads, edits files or uses a phone as a travel computer is more likely to notice them immediately.

1. Split-screen, floating windows and bubbles
What Android lets you keep on screen
Many Android phones can show two apps at once in split-screen mode. You can research in a browser while taking notes, check a document while composing an email, or keep a calculator visible while entering figures elsewhere. Supported phones may also offer a pop-up or floating-window view, allowing a smaller app window to sit above the main app. Messaging bubbles provide another compact way to answer a conversation without abandoning the current screen.
On Samsung Galaxy phones, the author of the Android Authority comparison describes saving frequently used app pairs to the Home screen or Edge Panel. That turns a repeated two-app task into a single launch action. The exact controls and supported apps vary by manufacturer, One UI version and device size, so treat these as examples rather than an Android-wide guarantee.
How Android 17 changes the bubble idea
Google’s Android feature documentation describes Android 17 Bubbles as a notification feature that can extend beyond chats. It lets users open and switch among more than two apps, and it introduces a bubble-bar interface for foldable devices. Availability depends on the phone’s software release and the manufacturer’s implementation; a phone running an older Android version may not expose the same interface.
What iPhone does instead
Calling iPhone “non-multitasking” is inaccurate. iPhone supports Picture in Picture for FaceTime or video while another app is in use, among other app-switching behaviors. The cited material does not establish a native iPhone split-screen mode, however. That distinction matters if your routine depends on two full apps remaining visible and interactive rather than one video floating over another app.
Who notices the difference
- Students who read a source while writing notes.
- People who compare a receipt, message or document while entering data.
- Anyone who wants to answer a message without leaving a form, map or video.
- Foldable-phone owners who use the larger display for several simultaneous apps.
If your work requires two complete app surfaces at once, test the exact Android model in a store or return period. App developers can restrict split-screen or floating use, and smaller screens can make the feature technically available but uncomfortable.

2. A Galaxy phone that behaves like a desktop
What Samsung DeX adds
Samsung DeX is a specific Galaxy feature, not a capability every Android phone shares. On a compatible Galaxy phone, DeX presents a desktop-style interface on an external display. The cited hands-on account describes a taskbar, multiple windows and workspaces, resizable windows, and drag-and-drop interactions. Instead of enlarging a phone interface, it gives you a computer-like layout for supported apps.
The basic setup
- Confirm that your exact Galaxy model supports DeX. Support is model-specific and can change by software generation.
- Connect the phone to a compatible external display. The reported setup uses an HDMI cable.
- Pair or connect an external keyboard and mouse.
- Launch DeX when prompted and arrange the windows you need on the display.
- Use the phone as the source for tasks such as editing a spreadsheet, replying to email, or working with photos and video.
The monitor, HDMI cable, keyboard and mouse are accessories rather than requirements for ordinary phone use. They become useful when you want a temporary workstation without carrying a laptop. Performance, app compatibility and display support still depend on the Galaxy model and the apps involved.
Why the switch back is noticeable
After using a phone as a desktop, an iPhone connected to a display may feel less like a full workstation if your expectation is resizable windows and drag-and-drop across several apps. The issue is not whether an iPhone can output or mirror content in a particular situation; it is whether the phone supplies the desktop workspace your routine expects.
DeX is most compelling for travel, a shared office, a hotel room or a home desk where a monitor is already available. It is less useful if you never connect peripherals, or if the apps you rely on do not behave well in the desktop interface.
3. App installation beyond the default store
Android’s broader distribution model
Android can offer software through channels beyond Google Play. The first-person comparison names F-Droid and GitHub repositories, as well as apps installed outside the Play Store. This model can make specialist utilities, open-source projects, test builds or regionally unavailable software easier to obtain when the developer distributes them directly.

That flexibility is not a promise that every outside package is safe, current or available in every country. A developer repository may contain several builds, an app may lack automatic updates, and a package from an unknown source can carry security or privacy risks. Check who publishes the software, whether the download is signed or otherwise verifiable, what permissions it requests, and how updates will arrive.
What changes on iPhone
iPhone software distribution is more controlled, and the rules for alternative distribution depend on region. A 2026 secondary account describes different treatment in the European Union and elsewhere, but the cited material does not provide a current primary-source, region-by-region legal account. Do not assume that a rule described for one country applies to your Apple Account, device or travel location.
For a fair comparison, ask a narrower question: can the specific app you need be installed through an authorized channel on your device in your region? If the answer is no, Android’s ability to use a developer repository may be the decisive workflow advantage. If the app is available in both ecosystems, distribution flexibility may make no practical difference.
Safer decision checklist
- Prefer the developer’s own distribution page or a well-established open-source repository.
- Match the package to your Android version and processor architecture when alternatives are offered.
- Review permissions before installation and remove apps you no longer need.
- Keep a record of where the app came from so you can obtain trustworthy updates.
- Do not disable device security controls broadly just to install one package.
4. More direct file access and bulk operations
The Android workflow people miss
In the cited account, Android makes it easier to move files between phone and computer, grant apps access to folders in local storage, perform bulk operations, and use storage-analysis or synchronization apps. Those are concrete workflow differences: selecting many files at once, moving a folder rather than sharing individual items, or allowing an app to work with a chosen directory.
This matters when your phone contains downloads, scans, project assets, recordings or exported media that need to be organized outside a single app’s private library. A conventional file manager can expose folders and let you rename, copy, move or delete groups of items. A cable connection or computer file browser can then become part of the same process.

Keep the comparison precise
iPhone can manage files through its Files app, cloud providers and app-specific sharing. It would be wrong to say that iPhone cannot handle files. The more defensible distinction is that the Android author’s setup offered broader folder-level access and fewer obstacles for the particular tasks listed above.
App sandboxing, permission prompts and provider support still affect Android. Some apps keep data in private locations, and a file manager cannot automatically expose content that an app does not make available. Before changing platforms, list the folders and file types you actually use; a theoretical feature is less important than whether your camera exports, audio projects or work documents move cleanly.
A practical transfer test
- Create a test folder containing several file types and nested subfolders.
- Copy it from the phone to a computer, then copy a modified version back.
- Open the files in the apps you use daily and confirm that names, dates and edits survive.
- Try a bulk rename, move and delete operation, then check the recycle or recovery behavior.
- Repeat the test over the connection you normally use, such as a cable, local network or cloud provider.
This test exposes the difference between “the phone has a file manager” and “the phone supports my file workflow.”

An Android Authority page poll with 1,047 votes asked, “What Android features do you miss when using an iPhone?” It recorded 31% for multitasking modes, 9% for desktop mode, 23% for sideloading and alternative app stores, 28% for a fully accessible file system, and 8% for reverse wireless charging. The percentages total 99% because of rounding.

Reverse wireless charging was included as another plausible hardware convenience, but the four sections above focus on software workflows.

What has changed on iPhone
Apple’s June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement says the Home Screen and Lock Screen gain new customization options for app icons and widgets, including a clear look. Claims that iPhone has no meaningful visual customization are therefore outdated. The announcement says iOS 26 is available as a free update for iPhone 11 and later, while Apple Intelligence features are limited to specified supported devices, languages and regions.
Check your exact iPhone model, software version and region before relying on any particular iOS 26 capability. These personalization changes do not recreate Android split-screen, DeX, alternative distribution or the same folder workflow; they simply keep the comparison fair by acknowledging where iPhone has evolved.
How to decide before switching back
| Question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need two apps visible? | Determines whether split-screen or floating windows are central. | Exact phone model, software version and app support. |
| Will the phone replace a light laptop? | Determines whether a desktop mode has real value. | DeX support, monitor connection, keyboard, mouse and app compatibility. |
| Do you install specialist software? | Determines whether distribution flexibility affects your work. | Authorized sources available in your country and update method. |
| Do you move folders and batches of files? | Determines whether file access will save time every week. | Folder permissions, cable or network transfer and your actual file types. |
| Are you comparing current devices? | Prevents assumptions based on an older phone or operating system. | Model-specific support, current OS release and regional restrictions. |
Android’s own switch-to-Android guidance also shows that transferred data varies by method. Its upgraded flow supports items such as app data, call history, Google Account data, files and folders, eSIM, passwords and passkeys, and Wi-Fi networks on select devices running Android 17, with rollout continuing to more devices. eSIM transfer remains carrier-dependent. Treat migration convenience as a separate decision from the four features above.

Bottom line for a returning switcher
The strongest reasons to miss Android are specific: keeping two apps active, turning a compatible Galaxy into a desktop, obtaining software from a developer channel, and handling folders in a more direct way. If none of those tasks appears in your weekly routine, an iPhone may not feel like a downgrade at all. If even one is central, test that workflow on the exact phone and software version you plan to buy before committing to the switch.
