Neither game’s official Steam listing, as documented for this article, confirms a permanent free-to-play release. The Forest and Ravenswatch normally appear as paid Steam games; a free weekend, giveaway, or regional promotion would be temporary and must be checked on the live store listing before you download. If an offer is active, these are very different experiences: The Forest is first-person crash-survival horror, while Ravenswatch is a top-down action roguelike built around repeatable runs.

The Forest: survive a crash and build a way out
In The Forest, you are the lone survivor of a passenger-jet crash in a hostile forest. Endnight Games Ltd. developed and published the game, which released on April 30, 2018. Its central threat is a society of cannibalistic mutants, but staying alive also depends on ordinary survival work.

The result is a persistent survival sandbox rather than a sequence of short matches. Your shelter, stockpiles and discoveries matter from one play session to the next, and the horror comes from trying to maintain a foothold while mutant enemies pressure your plans.
Ravenswatch: fairy-tale heroes in repeatable runs
Ravenswatch is a top-down roguelike action game from Passtech Games, published by Nacon and released on September 26, 2024. Its heroes come from tales and legends, reinterpreted for battles against nightmarish creatures.

The Steam listing advertises three open maps, more than 50 enemy types, more than 200 talents, 50 magical items and four difficulty levels. Those are developer-provided feature counts, not independent measurements. Regular free content updates are also listed, but free updates do not mean the base game is permanently free.

Because the free wording is time-sensitive, check the live offer rather than relying on a headline, old post or search snippet.

- Inspect the purchase panel. A temporary free event should replace or alter the normal purchase prompt and identify the promotion.
- Read the end date and time, then check whether the terms apply to your country or Steam region.
- Confirm what remains playable after the event. A free weekend may stop launching when the window closes, while a giveaway may add a license permanently.
- Start the installation only after checking the exact edition and any separate downloadable content requirements.
If the listing shows only a normal price and no dated promotion, the game is not confirmed free at that moment. Steam prices and promotions can change by region and date, so the status should be recorded with the date you checked.

Choose The Forest if you want survival systems
Pick The Forest when the appeal is building a defensible home, gathering materials, learning a dangerous map and making careful decisions about food, equipment and nighttime threats. Its first-person presentation and persistent shelter make it the closer match for a plane-crash survivor game or a co-op survival-horror session.

The two games match the searches behind the claim—“plane crash survivor game on Steam” and “roguelike with heroes from fairy tales”—but the available official listings do not establish that either is permanently free. Treat any free access as a dated, possibly regional Steam promotion and verify the live store terms. If access is free when you check, The Forest delivers persistent first-person survival horror; Ravenswatch delivers run-based dark-fantasy action.
