The Five Gaming Laptop Accessories Worth Buying First

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The right five accessories are a gaming mouse, a headset, a cooling pad, a USB hub or dock, and (for a desk setup) an external keyboard. They are not universal winners: each solves a different problem, and compatibility matters more than a badge on the box. Start with the limitation you actually have—imprecise control, shared-room audio, heat and blocked vents, too few ports, or an uncomfortable keyboard—then buy only the accessory that addresses it.

This shortlist is organized by use case rather than by a claim that every laptop needs the same products. The only specifically named model here is the Kootek Cooler Pad Chill Mat 5, whose specifications are reported by TechRadar’s 2026 cooling-pad guide; the other picks are categories because current evidence does not establish independently tested, region-specific winners for them.

Quick shortlist: five accessories by the problem they solve

Pick Best when you need What to check before buying Bulk and portability
Gaming mouse More precise, comfortable control than a trackpad or small built-in mouse Grip shape, size, weight, sensor controls, button layout, cable or wireless receiver Small; easy to travel with
Gaming headset Private game audio, a microphone, or team chat 3.5 mm, USB, or wireless connection; console and laptop compatibility; microphone controls Moderate; protect the earcups in a bag
Cooling pad Desk use with a hot chassis, low stand, or vents that need more clearance Laptop dimensions, vent alignment, stand stability, fan noise, USB requirements Usually desk-bound
USB hub or dock More USB, display, network, or card-reader connections Host-port capabilities, video standard, power delivery, data speeds, operating-system support Hub is travel-friendly; dock is larger
External keyboard A preferred layout, key spacing, or switch feel at a desk Layout, switch type, rollover, connection, desk space, laptop hotkeys Bulky; primarily for a fixed desk

An external SSD is a useful sixth, optional purchase when you need more game capacity. The available guidance does not establish a general game-loading-speed advantage for every laptop, so treat it as storage expansion rather than a guaranteed performance upgrade.

1. Gaming mouse: the most broadly useful control upgrade

A laptop trackpad is convenient for menus and travel, but a dedicated mouse gives games a stable sensor, a consistent surface, and controls you can position independently of the keyboard. Lenovo, Intel, Dell and HP guidance all place a mouse among the core gaming-laptop accessories. That makes it a sensible first purchase when aiming feels imprecise or your hand becomes tired.

  • Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter

Choose shape before headline specifications

  • Grip: Palm, claw and fingertip grips need different curves and rear heights. A shape that fills a palm can feel slow for a fingertip grip; a short, flat shell can leave a palm grip unsupported.
  • Size: Compare the mouse length and width with your hand, not only the product label. Large models can be uncomfortable for smaller hands, while compact models may cramp larger hands.
  • Weight: A light shell is easy to reposition in fast games; a heavier one can feel planted. Neither is universally better.
  • Buttons: Side-button placement should let you reach them without shifting your grip. Programmable buttons help only when their assignments are useful in your games.
  • Tracking controls: Adjustable sensitivity, a reliable lift-off setting and a sensor that does not skip matter more than an unsupported claim that one model is the best.

Wired or wireless?

Wired mice avoid battery charging and receiver pairing. Wireless models reduce cable drag, but add a battery, a receiver or Bluetooth setup, and another item to pack. If you travel with the laptop, check whether the receiver needs an adapter for your available USB port. For a desk, route a cable so it cannot catch on the laptop or cooling pad.

Set up a mouse without losing laptop controls

  1. Connect the mouse by USB, its receiver, or Bluetooth according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Install configuration software only if you need button remapping, profiles, firmware updates, or sensitivity controls. Basic pointing works without vendor software on most operating systems.
  3. Set one sensitivity level in the operating system and a manageable in-game value. Change one control at a time so you know which setting helped.
  4. Assign side buttons to actions you can reach safely. Keep an unmodified profile for troubleshooting.

2. Gaming headset: private audio and team communication

A headset earns its place when speakers would disturb other people, when directional game audio matters to you, or when you need a microphone for team chat. The key decision is not a gaming label; it is the connection and device compatibility.

Connection choices

Connection Advantages Checks and trade-offs
3.5 mm analog Simple, low-latency connection and no battery Confirm the laptop has a combined headset jack or that you have the correct splitter; microphone and headphone wiring must match.
USB Often includes its own digital audio controls and mute functions Uses a USB port and may need an operating-system driver or application; check whether your hub supplies stable data power.
2.4 GHz wireless Freedom from a cable while gaming Requires a receiver, charging routine and a free compatible port; verify the receiver works with your laptop and operating system.
Bluetooth Convenient for general audio and travel Pairing and battery are additional steps; microphone behavior and latency can vary by operating system and profile.

Fit and microphone checks

  • Adjustable headbands and swiveling earcups help different head sizes. A tight clamp can become painful during long sessions.
  • Closed earcups reduce sound leakage but can feel warmer. Choose breathable pads if your room is hot.
  • A detachable or flip-to-mute microphone is easier to pack and manage. Check whether the microphone boom blocks a webcam or collides with a chair headrest.
  • Use the laptop’s sound settings to select the headset for both output and input, then make a short recording before joining a voice channel.

Vendor descriptions from Lenovo, Dell and HP explain common headset features, but they are not independent comparative tests. Treat comfort, connection stability and return policy as practical checks when specifications cannot tell you how a particular head shape will feel.

  • Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.

3. Cooling pad: a conditional desk accessory

A cooling pad can raise the laptop, add airflow under its intake vents and provide a more comfortable viewing angle. It is not a guaranteed fix for high temperatures or frame-rate drops. Laptop cooling designs differ, and Intel advises comparing real-world reviews for the specific system rather than assuming one pad works the same way for every chassis.

Named option: Kootek Cooler Pad Chill Mat 5

TechRadar’s 2026 cooling-pad guide names the Kootek Cooler Pad Chill Mat 5 as its overall pick. The guide reports four 70 mm fans and one 120 mm fan, dimensions of 380 × 300 × 35 mm, and support for laptops from 12 to 17 inches. It also describes front stoppers and two USB 2.0 ports. These are guide-reported specifications, not measurements independently verified for your laptop.

Before ordering, measure the laptop’s footprint and inspect the underside. A pad can be the right diagonal size yet place its fans beside the intake vents. Confirm that the front stoppers do not press on a thin chassis and that the raised angle is comfortable with your external keyboard or mouse.

Cooling-pad buying and setup checklist

  1. Measure the laptop’s width and depth, then compare those measurements with the pad’s usable surface—not only the advertised screen-size range.
  2. Locate intake and exhaust vents in the laptop manual or underside. Choose a pad whose fan area can sit under intake openings without blocking exhaust paths.
  3. Check the stand’s front lip, rubber feet and hinge. A pad that slides or flexes can be worse than a flat, stable surface.
  4. Decide whether fan noise is acceptable for your room and microphone. More fans do not automatically mean quieter or cooler operation.
  5. Connect the pad’s USB cable and confirm whether its ports are USB 2.0 pass-through ports. Do not assume they can drive a monitor or fast external SSD.
  6. Test temperatures and clock behavior before and after on the same game, power mode and room conditions. If performance does not change, keep the pad only if its height or stability is useful.

4. USB hub or dock: fix a real port shortage

Gaming laptops often provide several USB types but not every connection you need at once. A hub can add short-term convenience; a dock can consolidate monitors, wired networking, storage and peripherals at a desk. Intel and Dell both stress checking the laptop’s port capabilities and the dock’s actual functions before purchase.

Understand the host port first

  • USB-C data only: A hub connected here may add USB devices but cannot output video or charge the laptop unless the port explicitly supports those functions.
  • USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode: Can drive compatible displays through the port, subject to the laptop, dock and monitor limits.
  • USB-C with Power Delivery input: May accept charging, but the dock’s wattage must match the laptop’s requirement; gaming under load can exceed a small travel charger.
  • Thunderbolt or another high-speed standard: Can support more demanding docks, yet the laptop, dock and cable must all support the claimed mode.
  • USB-A: Useful for conventional peripherals, but it generally cannot provide USB-C video or charging features by itself.

Read the laptop manual or manufacturer specifications for the exact port symbol and supported modes. A USB-C-shaped connector does not prove that every USB-C feature is available.

Hub versus dock

Choose a hub if… Choose a dock if…
You need a few extra USB ports, a card reader or wired network while traveling. You leave the laptop at a desk and want one cable for displays, network, storage and peripherals.
You can accept that video and charging may not be supported. You have confirmed video standards, power delivery and operating-system support.
Low weight and a short cable matter. Stable placement, multiple display outputs and a power adapter matter more than size.

Prevent common dock failures

  1. List every device you will connect simultaneously: monitor resolution and refresh rate, keyboard, mouse, headset, storage and network.
  2. Match each requirement to a dock specification. Look for the exact video connector, supported display mode, USB data speed and network standard.
  3. Check whether the dock includes its own power supply and whether that supply can deliver the laptop’s required wattage.
  4. Use the dock’s recommended cable. A charge-only or lower-speed cable can make a capable dock appear defective.
  5. Install firmware or drivers only from the dock maker when required, then test one device at a time.

5. External keyboard: a desk-first comfort and layout choice

An external keyboard is most valuable when you play at a desk and dislike the laptop’s layout, key travel or switch feel. It can also let you position the screen higher while keeping your hands at a comfortable height. The cost is another full-size object to carry and another cable or battery to manage.

Decide which layout you need

  • Full-size: Includes a number pad but consumes the most desk width.
  • Tenkeyless: Removes the number pad for more mouse room while retaining the standard navigation cluster.
  • Compact: Saves space but may hide arrow keys or function-row controls behind shortcuts.
  • Low-profile: Packs more easily and can feel closer to a laptop keyboard.

Mechanical, scissor and rubber-dome switches differ in sound, actuation feel and travel. Select by the feel you can use for hours, not by switch terminology alone. If you rely on laptop brightness, volume or performance hotkeys, confirm that the keyboard offers equivalent functions or that your laptop still exposes them through a function layer.

Keyboard setup at a desk

  1. Place the laptop on a stable stand or cooling pad so the top of the screen is near eye level.
  2. Connect the keyboard directly to the laptop or to a hub whose data capacity is adequate for your other devices.
  3. Confirm the operating-system layout matches the printed keycaps, especially for non-US layouts.
  4. Test every gaming key, rollover behavior and media shortcut before remapping anything.
  5. Keep the built-in keyboard available for firmware menus and recovery. Some laptops do not recognize an external keyboard early in the boot process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Optional sixth purchase: external SSD for capacity

An external SSD is practical when your internal drive is full or you move a game library between machines. The reviewed guidance identifies it as a storage accessory, but does not substantiate a universal game-loading-speed improvement. Buy it for capacity, backup or portability, and check the laptop port and enclosure interface for the transfer speed you actually need.

  • Confirm the drive’s connector and cable match the laptop or your hub.
  • Leave free space for game updates; a drive that is technically large enough can still become inconvenient when nearly full.
  • Use the operating system’s safe-eject function before unplugging it.
  • Keep a separate backup of saves and irreplaceable files; an external SSD is not automatically a backup.

How to choose in the right order

  1. Identify the bottleneck. Is the issue aiming, private audio, heat and posture, missing ports, or desk comfort?
  2. Check the laptop. Record screen size, underside vent locations, available USB-A and USB-C ports, supported display output, charging requirements and operating system.
  3. Decide desk or travel. Cooling pads, docks and full-size keyboards are generally desk equipment; mice and headsets travel more easily.
  4. Buy one category first. Test whether it solves the stated problem before adding another device that consumes the same port or desk space.
  5. Keep return conditions in mind. Fit, clamp pressure, fan noise and cable reach are difficult to predict from a specification sheet.

Compatibility checklist for an ASUS TUF or similar gaming laptop

Forum questions often mention an ASUS TUF laptop with a mobile RTX 5060, but the exact model still determines ports, vent layout, display outputs and power needs. Use the model-specific manual rather than assuming every TUF configuration is identical.

  • Write down the laptop’s exact model code and operating system version.
  • Photograph or sketch the left and right ports before ordering a hub, dock or headset.
  • Measure the closed laptop for a cooling pad or sleeve; screen inches alone do not provide depth and width.
  • Check whether USB-C supports data only, video output, charging, or a high-speed interconnect.
  • Confirm the dock’s supplied power and the laptop’s required input wattage.
  • Reserve a direct laptop port for a wireless receiver if a hub introduces interference or wake-from-sleep problems.

Troubleshooting: symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely checks
Mouse feels erratic Clean the sensor and surface, try a direct USB connection, replace or recharge the battery, and remove conflicting sensitivity profiles.
Headset microphone is silent Select the headset as the input device, verify mute switches and splitter wiring, and test the jack or USB port directly.
Cooling pad is loud but temperatures do not change Compare fan placement with intake vents, ensure the laptop is not blocking exhaust, and test the same workload with identical power settings.
Monitor does not work through a hub Confirm the host port supports video, use a compatible cable, check dock power, and test the monitor directly on the laptop.
USB devices disconnect from a dock Connect the dock’s power adapter, avoid overloading a bus-powered hub, update approved firmware, and test each peripheral separately.
External keyboard lacks function keys Use the keyboard’s function layer, install its configuration utility if needed, or keep the laptop keyboard for device-specific hotkeys.

What not to assume

  • A more expensive accessory is automatically more comfortable or more compatible.
  • A cooling pad guarantees lower temperatures, higher frame rates or longer hardware life.
  • Every USB-C port supports displays, charging and high-speed data simultaneously.
  • An external SSD automatically loads games faster than the internal drive.
  • A product description from a manufacturer or retailer is the same as an independent test.

The practical buying rule is simple: choose the accessory that removes your current limitation, verify the laptop-side specification, and accept the trade-off in cables, noise, desk space or battery management. For most players, start with a mouse; add a headset when communication or privacy matters; consider a cooling pad only after checking vents and stability; buy a hub or dock only for a documented port need; and reserve an external keyboard for a desk where its layout and feel justify the extra bulk.
