Samsung’s published Galaxy A36 5G and Galaxy A56 5G documentation currently describes One UI 7, One UI 8.0 and One UI 8.5. It does not provide a model-specific One UI 9.0 changelog in the available material. Therefore, treat this as a post-update checklist of documented settings to verify on a phone described as running One UI 9.0; do not assume any item is a new One UI 9 feature. Samsung also warns that update behavior can vary by model, country and network operator.

What to check before changing anything
Open Settings and use the phone’s software-information screen to confirm the installed One UI version. If a control named below is missing, the most likely explanations are a different build, country or carrier configuration rather than a fault. Samsung’s A36 and A56 update pages document the controls across several One UI generations, so the exact wording and location can change.
Both phones are 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED models with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 5,000mAh typical battery. The A56 uses Samsung’s Exynos 1580 platform; the A36 uses Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. Samsung states that both support 45W charging and Super Fast Charge 2.0. Those hardware specifications explain why the same battery and display decisions matter on both models, even though performance and update timing are not identical.

1. Hide sensitive lock-screen notification content
Notification previews are the first privacy setting to review because a locked phone can otherwise display message text, one-time codes or account details to anyone who can see the screen.
- Open Settings and go to Notifications.
- Open the lock-screen notification controls. Depending on the build, the label may refer to lock-screen notifications, notification pop-up style or notification details.
- Choose whether notifications are shown at all and whether their content is visible while the phone is locked.
- For apps that handle banking, work or private conversations, keep the alert but hide its detail, or disable lock-screen alerts for that app.
- Lock the phone and send a test notification from a non-sensitive app. Confirm that the preview matches what you are comfortable exposing.
There is no single correct choice. Showing full detail is convenient when the phone is usually in a private place; hiding detail is safer in offices, classrooms, public transport and shared homes.
Turn on stronger failed-authentication protection
Samsung’s update documentation also describes Failed authentication lock. When enabled, the phone automatically locks after repeated failed fingerprint, PIN, pattern or password checks. Review this under the device’s security and theft-protection settings. It is useful if someone repeatedly tries to guess an unlock method, but it can interrupt you after your own repeated mistakes, so keep your recovery PIN or password available.

Quick Share receiving permissions determine whether nearby devices can send sharing requests to your phone. A restrictive setting reduces unsolicited prompts and accidental acceptance, while a broader setting is easier when you regularly exchange files with people whose accounts you do not know.
- Open Settings and search for Quick Share, or open Quick Share from the share sheet or quick settings.
- Open the receiving or visibility options.
- Choose the option that limits receipt to devices signed in to your Samsung or Google account when that is your preferred privacy posture.
- Ask a trusted person to send a small test file. If the request does not appear, confirm that the sender is using an allowed account or temporarily select a broader receiving option for that exchange.
The account-only choice is not a universal best setting: it trades convenience for fewer unexpected requests. Change it back after a one-time transfer if you do not need open receiving.
3. Keep Auto Blocker on and check Knox Matrix
Auto Blocker is Samsung’s control for blocking certain risky app-installation and connection behaviors. Leave it enabled unless a specific, trusted task requires a temporary exception.
- Open Settings and search for Auto Blocker.
- Confirm that the main switch is on and review the individual protections listed on your build.
- If you must disable it for a known task, use Samsung’s option to turn it back on automatically after 30 minutes.
- Finish the task, then verify that Auto Blocker has returned to the enabled state.
Also open the security area and inspect Knox Matrix status if it is available. Samsung describes Knox Matrix as showing update status for supported devices signed in to a Samsung account. A status screen is not a substitute for installing an update, but it gives you a quick view of whether the account-linked device is current.
4. Choose the right battery and power-saving mode
Open Settings > Battery before selecting a power mode. The redesigned battery page shows estimated remaining time, charging status and weekly usage. Look at weekly usage first: it identifies the apps and habits that matter on your own phone instead of applying a blanket restriction.

| Mode | When it fits | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Standard power saving | You need moderate savings but still want adjustable limits and normal everyday operation. | Some background activity, display behavior or connectivity limits may apply, depending on the options you select. |
| Maximum power saving | You need the longest possible runtime and can give up non-essential functions. | More aggressive limits can reduce background synchronization, visual effects and other conveniences. |
Use Standard when you are managing a normal day away from a charger. Use Maximum for an emergency, travel day or low-battery situation where extending availability matters more than non-essential features. Neither mode guarantees a particular number of extra hours; radio signal, brightness, refresh rate, camera use and app activity dominate real-world consumption.
Both phones support 45W charging with Super Fast Charge 2.0, but the compatible charger, cable and regional plug still matter. Charging capability does not remove the need to select a power mode when you cannot recharge.
5. Learn the separated quick-settings and notification panels
One UI separates quick settings from notifications. This is easy to miss after an update because the swipe direction changes.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open quick settings.
- Swipe down elsewhere along the top edge to open notifications.
- From quick settings, tap the pencil or edit control to reorder buttons and place the controls you use most on the first page.
Put Airplane mode, Mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Power saving and Screen recorder where you can reach them without searching. Remove buttons you never use so an accidental tap is less likely. If the old single-panel gesture is important to you, check the panel-edit or layout options on your build; Samsung’s labels can differ by region.
Set notification pop-ups per app on the A56
On the Galaxy A56 running the documented One UI 8.5 behavior, notification pop-up style can be selected separately for each app. Open an app’s notification settings and choose the pop-up behavior you want. Use a prominent pop-up for time-critical tools and a quieter style for shopping, games or social apps. Availability can change with a later build, so do not assume every A36 release exposes the same per-app control.
6. Tune motion, brightness and reading comfort
Open Settings > Display and review these controls together rather than changing only one:
- Motion smoothness: choose the higher refresh-rate behavior for smoother scrolling, or a lower-demand configuration when endurance is more important.
- Adaptive brightness: let the sensor adjust brightness as lighting changes, then correct it manually when the phone repeatedly chooses a level you dislike.
- Eye comfort shield: schedule or enable the warmer display tone if it is more comfortable at night.
- Screen timeout: shorten it to reduce unattended screen-on time, or lengthen it if you frequently read without touching the display.
- Font size and screen zoom: increase either when text or controls are difficult to read; reduce them only if you can still operate the interface comfortably.
The A36 and A56 both have 120Hz displays, but choosing maximum smoothness all day is a preference, not a requirement. Revisit the setting after a day of normal use and compare comfort with the battery estimate shown in Battery settings.
7. Decide what a press-and-hold of the Side button does
Samsung’s A36 update notes say that holding the Side button can open Google Gemini or another digital assistant, and that the action can be changed in Settings. If you expect the hardware button to show the power menu, change this before you need to restart or shut down the phone.

- Review the action assigned to press-and-hold.
- Select the assistant you actually use, or choose the power-menu behavior if that is your preference.
- Lock the phone and test a short press and a press-and-hold so you know which action is triggered by each gesture.
A press-and-hold assignment is easy to forget after an update, especially when the phone has been reset or migrated from another device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Reconfigure the camera preview
The documented camera update reorganizes controls, adds a default 2x zoom button and separates grid-line controls from horizontal and vertical level controls.
- Open Camera and enter its settings.
- Review the zoom controls and confirm that the 2x button appears where you expect it.
- Turn on grid lines if you use them to align horizons or apply a rule-of-thirds composition.
- Turn on the horizontal or vertical level indicator when you need straighter architecture, product shots or landscapes.
- Leave guides off if you prefer an uncluttered preview; they do not change the captured image.
These are framing aids, not image-quality modes. The useful choice depends on whether you value a clean viewfinder or alignment assistance.

Live notifications can show ongoing progress for timers, recordings and exercises on the lock screen, status bar and notification panel. They are useful when you need to check progress without opening an app, but they can make a lock screen busy and reveal what you are doing.
- Open Settings > Notifications and review live or ongoing-notification controls.
- Inspect the apps allowed to surface live activity.
- Keep the feature for timers, workouts or recordings that you actively monitor.
- Disable or reduce it for apps whose ongoing status is not useful, or whose activity you do not want visible on the lock screen.
After changing the list, start a short timer and confirm where its progress appears. If lock-screen privacy is your priority, combine this review with the notification-detail choice in the first section.
What is different between the Galaxy A36 and A56?
The settings paths are broadly shared because both phones use Samsung’s One UI. The meaningful differences are hardware, update timing and feature availability by model, country and carrier.

If a setting is missing after the update
- Search Settings using the feature name and its shorter synonym, such as “lock screen,” “Side button” or “Quick Share.”
- Check the installed software version and update notes; a feature may be staged by model, country or operator.
- Look for the same control inside the app that owns it. Camera guides are inside Camera settings, while Quick Share receiving is exposed through sharing controls.
- Restart the phone after a major update, then check the setting again.
- If a control still does not appear, do not substitute a third-party app or assume the phone is defective; Samsung may not enable that function for the specific build.
