AFI describes the book as Crichton’s first novel published under his own name. That wording matters: it identifies his first novel under that byline, not necessarily the first book he wrote. The film is also listed as G-rated by AFI and by Universal Pictures at Home.

A satellite comes down near Piedmont, New Mexico. When a deadly biological threat is linked to the crash, a scientific team investigates and works to understand the danger. The film’s procedural, clinical approach suits a story in which experts must interpret evidence under pressure.

How does the film adapt Crichton’s novel?
Crichton wrote the source novel; Gidding wrote the screenplay. The change from page to screen was not a word-for-word transfer: AFI’s account of a modern interview with Wise notes that the adaptation changed one of the novel’s all-male scientists into a woman. Gidding suggested the change, and Wise initially resisted before agreeing.
The Library of Congress’s Now See Hear! describes the film as “faithful to the novel, striving to present fiction as fact and effectively conjuring its central theme that technology cannot be trusted.” The film’s effort to make its fictional crisis feel like a documented scientific case is a defining part of its adaptation, even though specific character details changed.

Why is it called a sci-fi classic?
The film places scientific investigation at the center of its suspense: the team must make sense of an unfamiliar threat through observation and analysis. AFI records Academy Award nominations for art direction and film editing, reflecting recognition of its visual design and construction. Its G rating is a classification, not a measure of how mild the story feels; the premise itself concerns a potentially deadly crisis.
What to know about the runtime
Runtime listings differ by source. AFI says copyright records list 121 minutes, while reviews it cites report 127, 130, or 131 minutes. Treat a runtime as edition- or source-dependent rather than a single settled figure.
