The assignment may look routine; the risk lies in trusting or executing code you cannot verify. Treat interview materials from an unverified contact as untrusted, and use an isolated environment if you need to test them.
How a fake interview turns into a malware infection
The approach starts with a plausible job pitch. People behind these schemes may pose as recruiters or prospective employers, sometimes claiming to represent AI, cryptocurrency, or NFT companies. They reach candidates through social media, job platforms, gig-work services, and freelance marketplaces.

The technical screen then supplies a reason to run code. A candidate might be asked to clone an NPM package, download a project, add a feature, fix a bug, troubleshoot software, or run the project to check a change. Malicious code can be hidden in dependencies or in parts of the project that seem unrelated to the requested task.
There are other variations. Microsoft describes an attack in which trusting an unfamiliar VS Code repository can allow its task configuration to fetch and load a backdoor. Other fraudulent screening sites show a fake technical error and tell candidates to paste a command into a terminal. An interview, coding task, repository, or package is not automatically malicious; the warning is being pressured to trust or execute material you have not vetted.

What the malware may do
Reported payloads can give an operator remote access or collect information from an infected device. Depending on the malware and intrusion, stolen material may include browser credentials, passwords, cryptocurrency wallet keys or seed phrases, files, source code, clipboard contents, keystrokes, and screenshots. Some intrusions also establish persistence or provide a foothold into an employer’s or client’s environment. These are possible capabilities reported across different activity, not a list of actions every infection performs.
The September 18, 2026 joint government advisory lists BeaverTail, InvisibleFerret, OtterCookie, OtterCandy, and StoatWaffle. Microsoft describes OtterCookie as a JavaScript backdoor with remote-command and data-theft capabilities, and Invisible Ferret as a Python backdoor used as a follow-on payload in more recent intrusions. ESET’s February 20, 2025 report describes BeaverTail as an infostealer and downloader, and InvisibleFerret as an infostealer and remote-access trojan.

What the reported figures cover—and what they do not
The September 18, 2026 joint advisory reports figures supplied by Japan’s National Police Agency for activity from approximately December 2025 through July 2026:
- At least 30,000 devices in more than 100 countries were affected.
- Funds or account credentials had been transferred from more than 7,000 cryptocurrency wallets.
- At least 1.7 billion Japanese yen—approximately US$10.71 million—was exfiltrated from victims as cryptocurrency on behalf of the DPRK.
These figures describe the activity covered by that advisory and period. They are not a count of all fake job scams, nor should they be combined with figures for separately named activity reported by other organizations.

Names vary by source
The September 2026 joint advisory calls the activity WaterPlum and says it is commonly referred to as Contagious Interview. Microsoft reports on Contagious Interview. ESET calls the activity it analyzed DeceptiveDevelopment and explicitly says it did not attribute that cluster to a known threat actor. These are source-specific reporting labels; the available reporting does not establish that every label refers to one definitively identified actor or that every campaign uses the same tools.
How to assess a coding assignment before you run it
Use the workflow—not just the recruiter’s tone or the apparent sophistication of the task—to judge risk. These indicators are reasons to slow down and verify, not a guaranteed fraud test.

A legitimate employer should be able to explain what the task does and offer a safer way to discuss or review it. If you are uncertain, stop and verify the opportunity using an independently located company contact—not just a link or phone number supplied in the message.

Safer ways to complete a technical screen
- Verify the opportunity. Check the company and recruiter through contact information you find independently. Treat inconsistencies or unverifiable claims as reasons to pause.
- Inspect before execution. Read the project instructions, scripts, dependencies, and editor task configuration. Do not paste terminal commands or enable scripts just because an interview page says they are needed.
- Keep untrusted work isolated. Do not run recruiter-supplied code on your everyday computer if it holds sensitive files, accounts, or cryptocurrency. If execution is necessary, use an isolated sandbox or virtual machine and inspect the code first.
- Use editor protections. Keep an unfamiliar VS Code repository in Restricted Mode and examine
.vscode/tasks.jsonbefore trusting the workspace. - Ask for an alternative. Request a code walkthrough, a review-only task, or an exercise in an environment you control if you cannot establish that the supplied materials are safe.
What to do if you already ran the code
- Disconnect the affected device from the internet. This can limit further communication with an operator, though it cannot undo information already copied.
- Assume sensitive material on that device may be exposed. From a separate, trusted device, secure important accounts and seek incident-response help if work systems, customer data, or employer networks may be involved.
- If cryptocurrency may be at risk, move it carefully. The joint advisory recommends creating a new wallet on a separate device, transferring assets, and storing the new seed phrase offline. Do not create the replacement wallet on the potentially infected computer.
- Back up essential files, then reset the operating system. The advisory recommends a full OS reset because malware may remain undetected. Preserve essential personal data, but avoid carrying suspicious programs or scripts into the reset system.
- For organizational devices, involve security staff. The advisory recommends that organizations use endpoint detection and response (EDR) to monitor behavior.
What hiring teams can check
Employers can verify claimed skills, certifications, contact details, and work history against reliable records, and look for inconsistencies in applicant information. The joint advisory describes a case where suspicious inconsistencies were found and the applicant was not hired; it also cautions that one behavioral clue by itself is not proof of malicious intent. Use verification as a process, not as a conclusion drawn from a single signal.
