Earth, an independent Mars and the working-class communities of the Belt form an armed, distrustful three-sided order. The discovery of the protomolecule—an ancient alien technology—turns that cold war into a conspiracy and an existential crisis.
This guide explains who the major factions are, how their politics work, why the setting’s spacecraft behave differently from typical science fiction, and where a newcomer should begin with the books or the six-season television adaptation.

The basic shape of The Expanse universe
Humanity has colonized the Moon, Mars, the asteroid belt and the outer planets, but it has not reached other stars. That distinction defines the setting. The Solar System is large enough that messages, people, fuel and weapons cannot move instantly, so every political decision is constrained by distance and logistics.

Most human society falls into three broad blocs:
- Earth and the United Nations: the demographic and political heavyweight of the system.
- Mars and the Martian Congressional Republic: an independent, militarized society with high technical capability.
- The Belt and its Belter communities: asteroid and station populations that extract resources and keep trade moving while receiving less wealth and political influence.
These categories are useful, but they are not moral teams. Each bloc contains competing interests, and individuals often act from survival, family, professional duty or personal loyalty rather than a simple ideology.
Earth, Mars and the Belt compared
| Faction | Government and leverage | Economic role | Environment and identity | Typical political priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth | United Nations; the largest population and major diplomatic weight. Luna is politically tied to Earth. | Controls the demographic center of humanity and the institutions that regulate the inner system. | An overcrowded home world whose people often experience scarcity and unequal access despite Earth’s central status. | Preserve influence, security and access to system-wide resources. |
| Mars | Martian Congressional Republic; independent, disciplined and heavily militarized. | Smaller population than Earth but described as ahead of Earth and the Belt in wealth and technology. | A deliberately built society shaped by the long project of making Mars independent and habitable. | Protect sovereignty, military readiness and the Martian project. |
| The Belt | No single government represents every Belter; stations, unions, local authorities and political movements compete for influence. | Provides labor, mined resources and transport links that the inner planets need. | Communities born in asteroid stations and colonies, adapted to habitats where life-support systems and gravity are constant concerns. | Gain fair treatment, economic control and political autonomy. |
Earth: population without equal security
Earth has the people and formal political weight to shape system-wide policy, but that power does not mean every Earther lives comfortably. The setting emphasizes overcrowding, scarcity and unequal access. Earth’s leaders can claim to represent humanity while still making decisions that leave distant communities carrying the costs.
The United Nations is therefore both a government and a source of political tension. Its officials must manage Earth’s enormous population, protect Earth’s strategic interests and negotiate with Mars and Belt communities that do not accept Earth’s authority as automatically legitimate.

Mars: independence built around a military project
Mars is not simply “Earth but farther away.” The Martian Congressional Republic governs an independent society whose institutions, wealth and technology developed around the goal of transforming a hostile planet into a home. The project gives Martian politics a long-term, collective focus, while the republic’s military culture makes security and readiness central to public life.
Mars has fewer people than Earth but is described as wealthier and more technologically advanced than both Earth and the Belt. That advantage gives it bargaining power, yet it also creates pressure to defend what has been built. Martian leaders must decide when compromise protects the project and when compromise looks like surrender.

The Belt: the system’s labor and resource frontier
Belters are people born and raised in asteroid-belt stations and colonies. Their communities provide the labor and raw materials that keep the inner planets supplied, but much of the resulting wealth and political authority remains concentrated elsewhere. This imbalance is the emotional and economic foundation of Belter resentment.
Belter society is not one uniform organization. Different stations and movements disagree about tactics, leadership and the meaning of independence. What unites many of them is the experience of being essential to the system while being treated as expendable. Demands for autonomy can therefore mean better wages and representation for one community, full political independence for another, or armed resistance for a third.
Three places that make Belt politics concrete
- Ceres: a major port and a political flashpoint where trade, policing and Belter identity collide.
- Ganymede: a food and medical center whose importance makes its security a system-wide concern.
- Tycho: a mobile construction and shipbuilding hub, demonstrating how Belt communities can create strategic infrastructure outside the control of the inner planets.
Why the politics are a cold war rather than a simple good-versus-evil story
The three blocs possess different kinds of leverage. Earth has population and institutional reach. Mars has military and technical capacity. The Belt controls strategically important extraction, transport and industrial work while bearing much of the social cost. No faction can safely ignore the others, but none trusts the others enough to create a stable settlement.
That produces a cold-war structure. Governments maintain deterrence, intelligence networks and military readiness while trying to avoid a conflict that could damage trade or destroy habitats. Alliances change when the immediate calculation changes. A faction may cooperate with a former rival because food shipments, evacuation routes or access to a repair facility matter more than old slogans.
The politics become explosive when a new technology alters the balance. A discovery that cannot be controlled by existing treaties or military doctrine turns a tense system into a race for information and influence. The central question is not only who is right; it is who can survive, who gets to decide and who will pay for the decision.

The technology that makes the setting feel different
The Epstein drive
Solomon Epstein is credited with developing the drive that makes practical interplanetary travel possible. It does not eliminate travel time or the need for logistics. Instead, it changes the Solar System from a collection of isolated outposts into a connected, contested environment.

Ships can reach distant locations often enough for politics and commerce to operate across the system, but journeys still consume time and resources. A commander must think about acceleration, fuel, crew endurance, spare parts and what happens if the ship cannot make the return trip.
Thrust gravity and “flip and burn”
Most spacecraft scenes use acceleration rather than artificial gravity. While a ship is thrusting, the deck behind the engines feels like “down.” To slow down before arrival, the ship turns 180 degrees and fires its engines in the opposite direction. This maneuver is commonly called flip and burn.
The result is a setting in which direction changes are physical events. A crew that fails to secure equipment can be injured when the ship rotates or changes thrust. A pilot is not merely steering across a flat screen; the pilot is managing a vehicle whose apparent floor depends on acceleration.
Magnetic boots and changing floors
Mag boots let crew members remain attached to a deck when the ship is coasting or when thrust changes the direction of apparent gravity. They are a practical response to the setting’s movement, not a decorative gadget. Characters use them because a room does not always have a reliable natural “down.”

Depressurized combat compartments
Before a fight, crews may depressurize parts of their ship. If a projectile punctures an already empty compartment, the damage does not vent the entire cabin and kill everyone inside. This procedure creates a trade-off: people need pressure suits or another safe environment, but the ship has a better chance of surviving a hull breach.
Combat therefore depends on preparation as much as firepower. Ammunition, missiles, air, heat management and repair options are finite. A victory that leaves a ship unable to return can be strategically worse than a retreat.
The protomolecule and ancient alien technology
The protomolecule is the story’s major technological and political disruption. It is an ancient alien technology whose discovery begins as a mystery and becomes a threat to the assumptions on which human society is built.
Its importance is not limited to what it can do in a laboratory. Whoever understands, controls or weaponizes it could change the balance among Earth, Mars and the Belt. That is why information about it becomes more valuable than ordinary military intelligence, and why a local investigation grows into a system-wide conspiracy.

Where to start: books or television?
Start with the book for the original entry point
Leviathan Wakes is Book 1 of the Expanse fiction and the novel on which the first television season is based. It is the clearest starting point if you want the original prose version of the setting, the investigation involving Miller and Julie Mao, and Holden’s first major decisions.
The full story consists of nine complete novels plus short stories and novellas, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the shared name James S. A. Corey. The series won the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Series, and the publisher’s current catalog describes more than 10 million copies sold. Those figures describe the published fiction, not a promise that every short work is required before beginning the main sequence.
Start with the show for a visual introduction
The television adaptation runs for six seasons and is produced by Alcon. The official series page lists the show on Amazon Prime Video, although availability can vary by country and can change over time. The adaptation also links to The Expanse: A Telltale Series, an interactive companion for viewers who want another story in the same universe.
The show is especially effective at making the technology legible. You can see the consequences of thrust gravity, magnetic boots, pressure suits and limited ammunition rather than having those ideas explained only in narration. It also puts Earth, Mars and Belt characters in the same political crisis early enough that the differences are easy to follow.
A practical order for a newcomer
- Begin with Leviathan Wakes if you prefer books, or Season 1 if you prefer television.
- Continue in publication or season order rather than jumping to later political arcs.
- Use the short stories and novellas as optional expansions after you know the principal characters and factions.
- Try The Expanse: A Telltale Series as a companion experience after you understand the setting’s major tensions.
How to follow the story without getting lost
When a new location or organization appears, ask four questions:
- Who governs it? Is the authority Earth’s United Nations, the Martian republic, a local station administration or an informal movement?
- What does it provide? Food, water, medical care, mined material, shipbuilding, labor or strategic access?
- Who bears the risk? The people making the decision may not be the people exposed to decompression, shortages or military retaliation.
- What changes if the technology works? The protomolecule matters because it can reorder all three answers, not merely because it is mysterious.
Tracking those questions keeps the plot from becoming a list of unfamiliar names. The central conflict is always material: who controls movement, resources, information and the right to decide the future of human settlements.
The central idea to remember
The Expanse is not a story in which humanity has conquered space and left politics behind. It is a story in which the Solar System is close enough to connect and far enough apart to make inequality, distance and mistrust dangerous. Earth, Mars and the Belt need one another, compete with one another and repeatedly misunderstand one another. The Epstein drive makes that tension possible; thrust-based physics makes it tangible; and the protomolecule turns it into a question about whether humanity can survive contact with something it does not understand.
