The End in Minecraft: How to Reach It and Beat the Ender Dragon

In Survival, reaching The End requires three linked tasks: craft Eyes of Ender from Ender pearls and blaze powder, use those eyes to locate an underground stronghold, and fill all 12 frames in the stronghold’s End Portal room. Once inside, destroy the End Crystals on the obsidian pillars before making a sustained attack on the Ender Dragon.

Bring more eyes than the portal itself needs, preserve arrows with snowballs when practical, keep cover between yourself and the dragon, and put irreplaceable loot in an Ender chest before entering. Defeating the dragon completes Minecraft’s main progression and leads to the game’s ending sequence.

What The End is—and why the Ender Dragon matters

The End is a separate dimension reached through a naturally generated End Portal inside an Overworld stronghold. It is not a place you can enter by building a portal in the open world. You must find the stronghold, locate its portal room, and activate the frame structure there.

Minecraft’s official Stronghold article describes defeating the Ender Dragon as necessary to complete Minecraft and reach the credits screen. The dragon is therefore the game’s central Survival objective, not an optional boss hidden behind a side quest.

The route has two uses for the same item:

  • An Eye of Ender points you toward a stronghold when thrown in the Overworld.
  • An Eye of Ender activates one frame in the End Portal room.

Those uses create the main planning constraint. Eyes can be consumed or lost while you are locating the stronghold, and the portal room requires 12 filled frames. A player who carries exactly 12 eyes can arrive at the stronghold without enough left to open the portal.

Materials and preparation before you search

Collect the ingredients for Eyes of Ender

Each Eye of Ender is made by combining one Ender pearl with one unit of blaze powder. The official description calls the result an Ender pearl imbued with the Nether’s blaze powder.

Gather a reserve rather than stopping as soon as you can craft a few eyes. You need enough for repeated locating throws, possible losses, and all 12 portal frames. The exact number you should carry depends on how many eyes are lost during the search, so there is no universally safe minimum beyond the 12 required at the portal itself.

Prepare equipment for the stronghold and The End

Bring equipment that lets you explore underground corridors safely and fight at range. A shield, blocks for emergency cover, food, a pickaxe, and a light source are practical choices for navigating a stronghold. Your combat loadout should include a bow or other ranged option, a melee weapon for close attacks, and enough ammunition for the dragon.

An Ender chest is especially valuable before the final transition. It keeps stored items accessible and protected across dimensions, so place irreplaceable loot inside before you enter the End. Do not rely on a single recovery run if your first attempt fails.

Use a written checklist

  • Ender pearls and blaze powder for Eyes of Ender.
  • More Eyes of Ender than the 12-frame portal requirement.
  • Food, blocks, a pickaxe, and a light source for the stronghold.
  • Ranged and melee weapons.
  • Arrows, plus snowballs if you want to conserve ammunition.
  • An Ender chest and only the supplies you are willing to risk.

How to craft and use Eyes of Ender

Craft the eyes

  1. Open your crafting interface.
  2. Combine an Ender pearl with blaze powder to make an Eye of Ender.
  3. Repeat until you have a reserve for both navigation and portal activation.

The eye is not merely a key for the final portal. It is also your navigation tool, so treat every throw as a consumable decision.

Throw an eye in the Overworld

  1. Stand in the Overworld and use an Eye of Ender.
  2. Follow the direction in which it travels.
  3. Move a substantial distance, then throw another eye to correct your course.
  4. Continue until the throws lead you to the stronghold area.

Some eyes disappear or break during this process. That is why the number you carry at the start matters more than the number you can craft at the moment you begin.

Finding the stronghold’s End Portal room

Eyes of Ender lead to an underground stronghold, not directly to the portal room. Once underground, you must explore the structure and locate the room containing the portal frame.

Search methodically

  1. Mark the corridor where you entered so you can return to it.
  2. Light explored passages and block off dead ends or unsafe openings.
  3. Check connected corridors, stairways, and rooms rather than assuming the first branch contains the portal.
  4. Keep a reserve of eyes for activation; do not use your last eye on navigation unless you have already found the portal room.

The portal room is recognizable by its 12-frame End Portal structure. The frames form the complete outline of the portal, with each frame needing an Eye of Ender.

What to do if the room seems inaccessible

Strongholds can be confusing because corridors intersect and some sections may be separated by walls or blocked passages. Retrace your marked route, inspect alternate branches, and mine only when necessary to reconnect areas. Preserve enough supplies to survive a long search; reaching the stronghold does not guarantee that the portal room is immediately visible.

Activating the End Portal

When you find the portal room, place one Eye of Ender into each of its 12 frames. The official Stronghold article states that every frame must be filled before the portal activates.

  1. Stand at an empty portal frame.
  2. Use an Eye of Ender on that frame.
  3. Repeat for all remaining empty frames.
  4. Verify that no frame is empty before stepping into the activated portal.

Do not count on recovering the eyes after placement. The safe assumption is that the eyes you insert are committed to the portal, which is another reason to carry spares during the search.

Choose a preparation plan before you enter

There are two broad ways to approach the dragon fight. A cautious plan spends time removing the dragon’s healing sources and preserving supplies. A speed-focused plan commits to damage sooner, but it gives the dragon more opportunity to remain healed while you are exposed. The cited combat guidance supports the crystal-first approach; it does not establish win rates or time advantages for either plan.

Approach Priority Main trade-off
Crystal-first, cautious Destroy every accessible End Crystal, including crystals behind iron bars, before sustained dragon damage. More time is spent climbing, aiming, and moving around the island, but the dragon loses its healing support.
Speed-focused Attack the dragon as soon as possible and accept that some crystals may remain active temporarily. Can expose you to repeated healing and a longer fight if the crystals are not removed quickly.
Ranged-heavy Use arrows while the dragon is airborne and during safe lines of sight. Requires ammunition management and leaves you dependent on clear shots.
Melee-heavy Concentrate damage when the dragon perches. Produces close-range opportunities but places you nearer to the dragon and the island’s edge.

What happens when you arrive in The End

The Ender Dragon appears after you arrive in The End. The arena is an island surrounded by the void, with obsidian pillars rising around it. End Crystals on those pillars heal the dragon, so the fight is not simply a matter of attacking the boss’s health bar.

First objective: destroy the End Crystals

Make the crystals your first sustained objective. Use arrows for crystals that are easy to target from the ground or from a safe position. Some crystals are protected by iron bars; you must account for that protection rather than assuming every crystal has a clear shot.

If arrows are limited, snowballs can destroy many crystals and preserve arrows for the dragon itself. This is an ammunition-management technique, not a claim that snowballs are the strongest damage option in every situation.

Use cover and control your position

Keep cover available around the island. Obsidian pillars, blocks you place, and terrain around the central area can interrupt dangerous lines of sight and give you time to heal or change weapons. Always track your distance from the island’s edge: a missed step can send you into the void, where ordinary recovery is impossible.

Attack according to the dragon’s position

  • When the dragon is airborne: use ranged attacks and conserve shots for clear opportunities.
  • When the dragon perches: move in for melee damage if the approach is safe, then retreat before you lose control of your position.
  • When you are exposed: return to cover instead of continuing to trade damage in the open.

Do not stand in one location simply because it offers a good angle. The dragon’s movement, the active crystals, and the void make repositioning part of the fight.

An Ender chest changes the risk calculation

Put valuables you cannot replace in an Ender chest before entering the portal. Its contents remain accessible across dimensions, so the chest functions as a protected reserve while you fight.

Keep the items you need for the actual battle in your inventory, but avoid carrying unrelated rare loot into a high-risk arena. If the attempt goes badly, you want a recovery plan that does not also lose everything you brought from the Overworld.

Survival, Creative, and command-assisted routes

Survival

Survival is the full progression route described above: gather pearls and blaze powder, craft eyes, locate the stronghold, find its portal room, fill all 12 frames, and defeat the dragon. It tests resource collection, navigation, preparation, and combat.

Creative or command-assisted play

Creative mode and command-assisted worlds can bypass some or all of the resource-gathering and exploration work. They are useful for practicing the arena, testing equipment, or reaching The End without completing the Survival progression. They do not provide a Survival completion challenge, however, so decide which goal you are pursuing before choosing the shortcut.

Common problems and fixes

“I ran out of Eyes of Ender before finding the portal.”

Eyes can be lost during stronghold location, and the portal still needs 12. Return to resource gathering, craft a larger reserve, and resume the search from your marked route. Do not spend every remaining eye on repeated throws once you are already in the stronghold area.

“The portal does not activate.”

Inspect all 12 frames. One empty frame prevents activation. Place an Eye of Ender into every frame, then check the ring again before entering.

“The dragon keeps recovering health.”

Look for surviving End Crystals on the obsidian pillars. Destroy accessible crystals first, including those behind iron bars, then return to dragon damage. Attacking the dragon while its healing sources remain active wastes ammunition and exposure time.

“I used too many arrows on crystals.”

Use snowballs for many crystal targets when available, reserving arrows for the airborne dragon. Select shots based on safety and visibility rather than firing continuously.

“I keep falling toward the void.”

Reposition toward the island’s interior, keep blocks ready for emergency cover, and avoid chasing the dragon across an exposed edge. Cover is a survival tool, not just a place to hide from attacks.

“I lost important items during an attempt.”

Store irreplaceable items in an Ender chest before the next entry. Carry only the equipment and supplies needed for the fight, and prepare a second attempt instead of treating one death as the end of the world.

What defeating the dragon accomplishes

Defeating the Ender Dragon completes Minecraft’s central progression objective. The victory activates the exit portal and leads into the game’s ending sequence, including the credits progression. These outcomes are normal game behavior; the official Stronghold article’s direct point is that defeating the dragon is required to complete Minecraft and reach the credits screen.

Final pre-entry checklist

  • Have you crafted a reserve of Eyes of Ender rather than only the 12 portal eyes?
  • Have you marked your route through the stronghold?
  • Have you found the portal room and filled every frame?
  • Are your ranged and melee weapons ready?
  • Do you have arrows, with snowballs available if you want to conserve them?
  • Have you stored irreplaceable loot in an Ender chest?
  • Do you have blocks, food, and a way to maintain cover?
  • Is your first combat objective the destruction of the End Crystals?
  • Are you prepared to use ranged attacks in the air and melee attacks during a safe perch?
