The same evidence-first approach applies to pet longevity: there is no universal dog lifespan or proven miracle supplement, but body condition, preventive veterinary care and safe living conditions are practical ways to improve an animal’s odds.
Why social-media bans keep getting blocked or contested
A law can address a genuine safety concern and still fail a constitutional test. Courts ask whether the government has chosen a lawful, sufficiently tailored way to pursue that goal, especially when speech, privacy and access to information are involved.

Florida’s child-account restrictions were enjoined
In June 2025, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker blocked enforcement of Florida’s 2024 child social-media law. The measure would have barred accounts for children under 14 and required parental permission for 14- and 15-year-olds. Walker acknowledged sincere concerns about harms to children but wrote that the law was “likely unconstitutional” (Associated Press, 2025).

That ruling is an injunction, not a finding that online risks are imaginary. It means the state could not enforce this particular structure while the constitutional challenge proceeded. Broad age cutoffs, compelled verification and restrictions on lawful users can create free-expression and privacy problems that lawmakers must address with narrower methods.

The federal TikTok measure survived appellate review
The outcome was different for the federal law aimed at TikTok. In December 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld the divest-or-ban statute. The Justice Department said the law focused on “breaking the ties that bind TikTok to the regime in Beijing” (U.S. Department of Justice, 2024).
That decision did not mean every user immediately lost access. It upheld Congress’s national-security framework, while implementation, ownership questions and enforcement remained politically volatile. The case illustrates why “the TikTok ban” is an imprecise phrase: a law can survive judicial review without producing an immediate, permanent shutdown.
Australia’s under-16 rule took effect amid evidence disputes
Australia’s under-16 social-media law came into force in December 2025 for major services including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok and YouTube. More than 140 experts and organisations criticised the policy in reporting by the BMJ. Clinicians questioned the strength of evidence for a blanket age rule, the reliability and privacy implications of age verification, and the possibility that removing online communities could cut young people off from beneficial social connection (BMJ, 2025).

Unlike Florida’s blocked statute, Australia’s rule began operating. Enactment, however, does not establish that a policy reduces harm. Governments still need measurable outcomes: fewer serious incidents, better mental-health indicators, workable compliance and no disproportionate loss of support for vulnerable young people.
How the three approaches compare
| Measure | Legal status | Stated objective | Evidence and implementation questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida child-account law (2024) | Enforcement blocked in June 2025; Judge Mark Walker called it “likely unconstitutional” | Child safety | Whether broad age limits and parental-permission rules are sufficiently tailored; how they affect speech and privacy |
| U.S. divest-or-ban statute targeting TikTok | Upheld by the D.C. Circuit in December 2024 | National security and reducing control by a foreign adversary | How divestiture, ownership changes and enforcement work in practice; political volatility around implementation |
| Australia under-16 law | In force from December 2025 | Child safety | BMJ-reported criticism from more than 140 experts and organisations concerning evidence, age assurance and loss of beneficial connection |
Across all three, age assurance is a practical obstacle. A system that is easy to evade may not protect children; a system that demands identity documents or biometric data can create new privacy and security risks. Policymakers also have to distinguish platform design problems from the lawful exchange of ideas, support and health information.
Is there a universally safe age for social media?
No single age has been established as universally safe. The laws above use different thresholds, and Australia’s under-16 rule remains contested on evidence and implementation grounds. A safer household decision depends on the child’s maturity, the specific service, privacy settings, contact risks, sleep and school effects, and whether a trusted adult can provide supervision.

These steps are risk reduction, not proof that a particular platform is safe. Families should check current rules in their country because legal requirements can change.
Why social media matters to pet health
Social platforms are now a major channel for animal-health information. A 2025 JAVMA viewpoint warned that nonexperts can gain influence despite lacking veterinary training and urged veterinarians to debunk rumours and provide transparent, science-based guidance.
For an owner, popularity is not evidence. Treat claims about cancer cures, raw diets, detoxes or “longevity” powders as unverified until a veterinarian can identify the ingredients, dose, interactions and relevant clinical evidence. A post that cites a single animal or testimonial cannot establish that a product extends life.

What is known about dog lifespan
There is no single average that fits every dog
A 2024 JAVMA review of studies published from 1981 through 2023 found no veterinary consensus on one average dog lifespan. Mortality records differ by breed, body size, birth cohort and research method. The review found that median lifespan appears to have increased over time, but that trend does not turn a population estimate into a promise for an individual dog.
Size changes the population estimate
Banfield Pet Hospitals’ clinical dataset, published in 2023 and drawn from more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals, estimated life expectancy at birth as follows:
| Dog size | Estimated life expectancy at birth |
|---|---|
| Giant | 9.51 years |
| Large | 11.51 years |
| Medium | 12.70 years |
| Small | 13.53 years |
| Toy | 13.36 years |
| All dogs in the dataset | 12.69 years |
These are U.S. clinical-population estimates, not a guarantee for a particular breed or mixed-breed dog. Genetics, disease, accident risk, access to care and living conditions can move an individual far from the table’s midpoint.

Body condition is one of the clearest modifiable signals
In the same Banfield dataset, dogs classified as obese had an estimated life expectancy at birth of 11.71 years, compared with 13.18 years for dogs at an ideal body condition (Banfield Pet Hospitals clinical dataset, 2023). The difference is an association in medical records, not proof that a specific food, calorie target or weight-loss product will add a fixed number of years.
Keeping a dog at an ideal condition does not mean making the animal underweight. Ask a veterinarian to score body condition, assess muscle loss and set a safe weight-management plan. Calorie needs change with age, activity, neutering status and illness, so an internet formula should not replace an individualized assessment.
Actions with the best evidence-to-risk balance
| Action | Evidence strength for longevity | Veterinary oversight | Typical cost and overclaiming risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintain ideal body condition | Population association with longer life; exact added years for an individual are unknown | Useful for body-condition scoring and calorie planning | Food and monitoring costs vary; risk comes from crash diets or promising a fixed lifespan gain |
| Preventive veterinary care | Evidence-aligned for detecting and managing disease, but no universal lifespan increment is established | Core requirement | Visits, testing and treatment vary by location and illness; avoid claims that one protocol fits every dog |
| Safe housing and accident prevention | Reduces avoidable hazards, though a precise lifespan effect is not quantified here | Veterinarian can identify risks specific to age and disease | Usually modifiable at home; do not market safety devices as longevity cures |
| Individualized treatment for diagnosed disease | Depends on the condition and therapy | Essential | Costs vary widely; outcomes should be discussed for the actual diagnosis |
| Longevity supplements | Insufficient evidence for broad, definitive claims | Review every ingredient with a veterinarian | Recurring expense and interaction or contamination risk; testimonials are not proof |
What the broader longevity evidence says
A 2025 systematic review concluded that genetics, epigenetics and environment all influence lifespan. It also found that evidence for several household and dietary exposures remains too limited for definitive conclusions. That uncertainty is a reason to prioritize measurable basics—body condition, preventive care, safe surroundings and treatment of real illness—rather than stack unproven products.
Owners can make a practical plan by recording weight and body-condition scores, keeping vaccination and parasite-control decisions current with veterinary advice, arranging examinations appropriate to the dog’s age and risk, and asking what symptoms require prompt care. The plan should be revised when activity, appetite, mobility or a diagnosis changes.
Bottom line
Social-media bans fail for different reasons: Florida’s measure was stopped as likely unconstitutional, the federal TikTok statute survived appellate review, and Australia’s rule took effect while experts disputed its evidence and age-verification model. For pets, the strongest defensible advice is less dramatic but more useful: maintain an ideal—not underweight—body condition, use preventive veterinary care, reduce safety hazards and treat supplement promises skeptically. Population data can guide those choices, but they cannot predict exactly how long any individual pet will live.
