Two technologies highlighted in the October 14, 2026 edition of MIT Technology Review tackle very different logistics problems: a DARPA program is trying to keep blood products usable for years instead of days or weeks, while China’s WeLion New Energy is developing semi-solid batteries that could store more energy in electric vehicles, boats and drones. The blood project is targeting battlefield deployment by 2029 but still faces fundamental safety questions. WeLion has already reported a Nio-associated battery pack with more than 1,000 kilometers of range, although cost and mass production remain unresolved.
Why the US military wants blood that lasts longer
Blood is difficult to move in a war zone because donated components spoil, require controlled storage and may be unavailable when a unit is cut off from normal supply lines. The newsletter points to a February 2007 incident in Iraq, when a helicopter carrying blood to a field hospital was shot down and all seven crew members were killed. The tragedy illustrated how a fragile supply chain can become a medical risk as well as a transport mission.

DARPA, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is funding a $73 million effort to make plasma, platelets and red blood cells shelf-stable. The basic approach is to dry the blood products so they can be stored for long periods, transported without the same dependence on refrigerated logistics and reconstituted for use near a battlefield.

“Fake blood” is an informal description, not a claim that one universal synthetic liquid is ready to replace donated blood. The program is focused on dried versions of real blood products and on synthetic alternatives whose safety and performance still have to be demonstrated. Plasma, platelets and red cells perform different biological jobs, so each product presents its own technical and clinical requirements.

What the project could change
- Storage: Dried products could remain available for much longer than ordinary donated blood, reducing losses from expiration.
- Transport: Supplies could be moved and held closer to troops without relying on the same fragile cold-chain network.
- Response time: A field medical team could potentially reconstitute a product when it is needed instead of waiting for a fresh delivery.
The 2029 target is not a guarantee
DARPA’s stated objective is to have bags of dried blood products available in the field by 2029. That is a development target, not proof that the products will be routinely issued or suitable for every emergency. The newsletter emphasizes that safety and effectiveness remain major open questions. Any product used for transfusion would need to preserve the necessary biological function and perform reliably under battlefield conditions.
How semi-solid-state batteries differ from conventional lithium-ion cells
WeLion New Energy is described as developing liquid-solid hybrid, or semi-solid-state, battery cells. Rather than using the same all-liquid design associated with conventional lithium-ion packs, the technology combines liquid and solid elements inside the cell. The intended payoff is a battery that is safer and stores more energy for its size or weight.

Those advantages matter because vehicle range, payload and charging design are constrained by how much usable energy a pack can carry. A higher-energy cell could let an electric car travel farther without adding a proportionate amount of battery mass. The same logic applies to boats, where weight is especially costly, and to drones, where every gram affects flight time and payload.
What has been reported about WeLion’s range
The newsletter says WeLion released a battery pack with electric-vehicle maker Nio in 2023 that offered more than 1,000 kilometers of range. That figure describes the reported range of that specific pack, not a universal distance for every WeLion-powered vehicle or every driving condition. Real-world range varies with vehicle design, speed, weather, terrain, payload and testing method.

Why semi-solid does not automatically mean “better”
Compared with conventional lithium-ion technology, semi-solid cells are being pursued for higher energy density and improved safety. But a battery is useful only when its performance can be reproduced at industrial scale and at a price vehicle buyers can support. The source identifies scaling production and competing on cost as substantial challenges. Durability, manufacturing consistency and integration into complete vehicle packs also determine whether a promising cell becomes a mass-market product; the newsletter does not establish that those hurdles have been solved.

The comparison is useful because both projects are often described as “future technology,” but they face different tests. The blood effort must prove biomedical performance in urgent, high-consequence use. The battery effort must manufacture cells consistently, preserve their advantages in complete packs and sell them at a viable cost.
