MIT Technology Review’s October 8, 2026 edition of The Download highlights two separate stories: why advances in language and image AI may not translate quickly into capable humanoid robots, and how WaveSave describes its SlamDam portable flood barrier. The robotics discussion is a debate, not a verdict that humanoids cannot work; the dam’s specifications are newsletter-reported, not independently verified here.
Why AI progress may not quickly produce useful humanoid robots
The newsletter examines an appealing analogy: chatbots imitate aspects of human language, so perhaps advances in AI could help robots imitate human movement. It cautions that physical environments vary in ways that language and image systems do not, making the move from digital capabilities to reliable action in the world a difficult one.

Researchers described in the item are skeptical of claims that current AI advances will soon deliver general-purpose robots. The newsletter reports disagreement in robotics labs about whether today’s approaches can make all-purpose humanoids or whether a different direction is needed. That is a live debate, not evidence that humanoid robots are impossible or that one particular technical obstacle has been conclusively established.

The issue warns against treating “humanoid robots” and “generalist machines” as interchangeable labels. A humanoid describes a robot’s human-like form; general-purpose describes breadth of capability. The newsletter does not provide a comparison of named robot systems, tasks, autonomy levels, or reliability, so it does not establish which designs can perform a given job or in what settings.

What the newsletter says about WaveSave’s SlamDam
In a separate climate-technology item, MIT Technology Review identifies WaveSave as one of its 2026 Climate Tech Companies to Watch and describes the company’s SlamDam as a portable rubber barrier. The stated deployment concept is to unfurl it along a riverbank or shoreline, then pump it full of water so it swells into place to shield nearby property or structures as water rises.
The newsletter says the barrier can stand up to 1.3 meters high. That is the maximum height reported in the accessible newsletter copy, not an independently verified measurement. The item does not establish how well the product performs in particular flood conditions.

What the available description does not establish
The accessible issue does not state a price or regional availability, and it gives no independent efficacy data, deployment limits, or performance comparison with other flood barriers. It also does not establish that the SlamDam meets a particular standard or will prevent flooding to a specified depth. The description is useful for understanding the product’s basic format, but not enough to judge whether it suits a specific site.

How to read this edition
The two items have different implications: the robotics story tempers expectations about turning AI progress into adaptable machines, while the SlamDam item introduces a specific portable flood-protection concept. The accessible newsletter text was reproduced by a secondary source that attributes it to MIT Technology Review; the official page could not be accessed, so the product and robotics details here are reported as newsletter claims rather than independent verification. The robotics item is signed by Jamie Condliffe and notes collaboration with the nonprofit research foundation Aventine.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Complete Flood Protection Kit: Includes (1) 5ft Quick Dam Flood Barrier and (2) 4ft Indoor Water Dams for both indoor and outdoor water control
- Fast Water Activation: Barriers swell and activate on contact with water; no sand, tools, or labor required
- 5ft Flood Barrier Performance: Creates a 3.5" high flood wall in under 10 minutes; absorbs up to 4 gallons of water to block and divert incoming floodwater
- Indoor Water Dam Protection: Each 4ft dam absorbs 1.85 gallons; grows to 2.5" high for leaks, spills, and condensation control
- Multi-Use Water Defense: Suitable for doorways, garages, basements, pipes, appliances, hot water tanks, and water-prone areas
Rank #4
- Flexible Design for Corners and Curves: unlike rigid tube barriers, this flood barrier bends and curves to fit around doorways, garage entrances, corners, and uneven surfaces; Simply shape it along any layout to create a continuous water seal without gaps, giving you reliable coverage in areas where straight barriers fall short
- Extended Reach with High Barrier Protection: the 12 ft length spans standard garage entrances and wide doorways, while the 12 inch height provides a substantial wall against rising water levels common during heavy storms or coastal flooding events; Fill with water for a stable, weighted seal that holds position without anchoring or additional hardware
- Easy Three Step Setup: unfold the tube, connect a garden hose to fill it with water, then place it where protection is needed; No heavy lifting of sandbags, no special tools, no complicated installation; When the weather clears, simply drain the water, fold the tube flat, and store it in a compact space until next use
- Reusable and Designed to Last Multiple Seasons: made from reinforced PVC material, this water barrier can be filled, drained, and reused season after season; It holds up against sun exposure, moisture, and repeated handling; Store it flat in a garage or closet between uses and it will be ready when flooding threatens again
- Important Notes on Handle Use: the fixed handles on each end are designed for positioning and moving the tube when it is empty or partially filled; Do not lift or carry the tube by the handles once it is fully filled with water, as the weight can cause stress on the attachment points; Always drain before relocating
Rank #3
- RAPID ACTIVATION: Dams expand to 2.5 inches high within 5 minutes of contact with water, providing quick flood protection
- HIGH ABSORBENCY: Each 4-foot dam absorbs up to 1.85 gallons of water, effectively containing spills, leaks, and minor floods
- EFFECTIVE BARRIER CREATION: Once activated, the dams form a strong, flexible barrier that prevents water from spreading, keeping areas dry and protected from leaks and spills
- PORTABLE & COMPACT: Stored in a high-visibility orange bucket with a handle for easy transport and quick deployment wherever needed
- NON-TOXIC & SAFE: Made from non-toxic materials, these dams are safe for use in homes, workplaces, and industrial settings
