Apps are not disappearing; their interfaces may be becoming less central. AI assistants are beginning to let people describe a task in ordinary language, then connect to services or display app features inside a conversation. That shifts where some interactions happen, but the available evidence does not show that people have abandoned standalone apps at scale.
Are apps going away because of AI?
Not literally. The more precise change is at the interface layer: instead of opening a service, finding the right screen and tapping through controls, a user may ask an assistant to do something with that service. The service and its underlying app capabilities can remain in place even when the conversation becomes the front door.

The article that popularized this title argues that apps could persist as infrastructure while traditional interfaces remain useful in some situations. That is a thesis about how software may be used, not evidence that apps or software companies have already disappeared. The sources available here establish new product features, not a market-wide shift in usage or a decline caused by AI.

What can assistants do with other apps?
Apps inside ChatGPT
OpenAI’s October 6, 2025 announcement described apps that users can chat with inside ChatGPT. They can respond to natural-language requests and present interactive interface components in the conversation. Users could call an app by name, or ChatGPT could suggest one when relevant. OpenAI also described an Apps SDK preview for developers, built on MCP. Read OpenAI’s announcement.

That launch announcement gave specific geographic and account rollout conditions for October 2025, including exclusions and plan details. Those are historical launch terms, not a reliable statement of current availability; access can change. At launch, the first use of an app prompted a connection step and explained that data might be shared. The announcement also described privacy requirements for developers.
Gemini Connected Apps
Google says Gemini Apps can connect to other apps to complete requests and, with permission, take actions in them. Its examples include creating calendar events, searching productivity apps, playing media, shopping for groceries, booking reservations and sending messages. The service being acted on remains an underlying app or account; Gemini provides another way to request some of its capabilities. Google’s Connected Apps documentation says supported apps vary by location, language, device and Gemini app, and that some connections depend on settings such as Keep Activity. Users can connect or disconnect apps.

These descriptions do not constitute a standardized reliability comparison. They establish different feature designs and conditional access, not that either assistant can handle every task or is universally better.
Will AI assistants replace apps?
They may replace some trips through app menus with a conversational request, but that does not mean the app itself is obsolete. A conversation can be convenient for a clear, bounded task; a dedicated interface may still be better when a person needs to browse, compare options, inspect detailed information or correct a series of choices. The sources do not establish how often users choose one route over the other.

There is no independent comparable usage data in the available sources showing that assistant use has caused standalone app use to decline. Product features demonstrate that companies are building conversational routes into services; they do not prove mass adoption, displacement or a causal change in user behavior.
What is MCP, and why does it matter for apps?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants with external systems and data. Anthropic introduced it on November 25, 2024, describing a model in which MCP servers expose data or capabilities and AI applications connect to those servers. The announcement called it “an open standard that enables developers to build secure, two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools.” Read Anthropic’s MCP announcement.

MCP helps explain one way an assistant can connect to software beyond its own chat window. It is an integration mechanism, not evidence that all apps use the protocol, that connected actions always work reliably, or that conventional interfaces are on their way out.

Permission and connection management are part of the feature designs described by the companies. Google says some actions require permission and users can disconnect apps. OpenAI’s October 2025 announcement described a connection prompt on first use and privacy requirements for developers. The precise prompts and controls depend on the product and can change.

For any assistant that can act on someone’s behalf, a useful design standard is to make the requested action clear, ask for confirmation when the consequences warrant it, and provide a way to understand or recover from mistakes. Those are important design implications, not proof that every product currently handles every action safely.
What the “death of apps” claim really means
The strongest version the evidence supports is that the app interface may no longer be the only, or always the most visible, way to use a service. ChatGPT apps and Gemini Connected Apps show assistants exposing or invoking capabilities from other software, while MCP offers one way to connect AI applications to external systems. Whether this changes app use at scale remains unproven; for now, “death” is a provocative description of an interface shift, not a documented disappearance of apps.
