Choose Mario Kart World if you want recognizable kart racing, connected courses, Grand Prix, elimination races, battle modes and substantial multiplayer. Choose The Crew Motorfest if you want an open-world driving festival set in Hawaii with cars, motorcycles, planes, boats and many other vehicle types. They are not two versions of the same racing formula: Mario Kart World is a course-and-mode-focused kart racer, while Motorfest is a connected open-world vehicle game.
One practical difference matters before you buy. Ubisoft says an internet connection is required to play The Crew Motorfest. Nintendo documents Mario Kart World’s local and online modes, but the official materials considered here do not establish that every Mario Kart World mode works offline.

| Open-world driving and many vehicle categories | The Crew Motorfest | Nintendo describes a Hawaiian open world and more than 700 vehicles spanning cars, bikes, planes, boats and more. The figure is Nintendo’s product-listing claim, not an independent count. |
| Traditional kart racing | Mario Kart World | Nintendo lists Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, Free Roam and other modes built around interconnected courses. |
| Several people on one console | Mario Kart World | Nintendo lists one-system play for 1–4 players. |
| Large online races | Mario Kart World has the clearly stated scale | Nintendo lists online play for 1–24 and races for up to 24 drivers. The sources here do not provide a directly comparable Switch 2 player cap for Motorfest. |
| Playing with no internet connection | No winner established | Ubisoft explicitly requires a connection for Motorfest. Nintendo’s reviewed Mario Kart World pages do not settle offline availability for every mode. |
These are feature-based conclusions from official Nintendo and Ubisoft descriptions, not the result of controlled testing. No independent frame-rate, resolution, handling, review-score or performance comparison is established by the available material.
What kind of game is The Crew Motorfest?
An open-world vehicle festival
The Crew Motorfest is presented as a driving festival in Hawaii rather than a menu of isolated tracks. The setting is a major part of the proposition: you explore a large island environment, move between activities and use different kinds of vehicles. That makes it a fit for players who enjoy choosing where to go and what to drive as much as they enjoy crossing a finish line.

Nintendo’s current Nintendo Switch 2 listing says Motorfest includes more than 700 vehicles. The listing names cars, bikes, planes, boats and additional categories. Because this is a publisher description, treat “more than 700” as Nintendo’s advertised catalog size, not as a separately audited inventory. It nevertheless identifies the game’s defining breadth: you are not restricted to karts or even to four-wheeled vehicles.
What the open world changes
An open-world structure favors unscripted driving and variety. A player who wants to cruise, change vehicles, discover activities or approach a festival from different directions is looking for a different rhythm from a player who wants three laps on a carefully bounded circuit. Motorfest’s appeal is therefore strongest when exploration and a broad garage are priorities.
That format also means it should not be judged solely by the standards of a kart racer. Mario Kart World’s core question is how a race, item set or battle plays on a course. Motorfest’s core question is what you can do across its world and how its many vehicle categories support that festival format. The available official descriptions do not establish which game has better handling, graphics or performance, so those should not be inferred from the feature lists.

Ubisoft’s announcement for the Switch 2 version states that an online connection is required to play The Crew Motorfest. Plan on reliable internet access whenever you intend to launch or use the game. That requirement is broader than simply saying that online multiplayer exists; Ubisoft’s wording makes connectivity a condition of play.
Nintendo’s listing also describes the account and platform-subscription arrangements associated with online multiplayer and features. The exact requirement can vary by feature and account configuration, so check the current Nintendo product page and your region’s subscription terms before purchase. Do not assume that an internet connection alone guarantees access to every online feature.

What kind of game is Mario Kart World?
Interconnected courses and familiar race formats
Mario Kart World is a kart racer built around a world of connected courses. Nintendo’s product listing describes it as “The whole world is your racetrack in the Mario Kart World game, a massive evolution of the series.” That is Nintendo’s promotional wording, but it accurately signals the game’s emphasis on linked routes and a broader sense of place than a simple list of disconnected tracks.
The principal modes Nintendo lists are Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle and Free Roam, along with other activities. Grand Prix is the traditional competitive structure for players who want a sequence of races. Knockout Tour adds an elimination format, making progress dependent on surviving successive checkpoints rather than merely accumulating points across a conventional cup. Battle provides a different objective from lap racing, while Free Roam is for exploring the connected world without the same race structure.
Local and online player counts
Nintendo documents three useful multiplayer scales:
- One system: 1–4 players.
- Local wireless: 1–8 players.
- Online: 1–24 players.
For online features, Nintendo says an internet connection, Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required. The one-system figure is the clearest reason to choose Mario Kart World for a household or gathering where several people will share a Switch 2. The local-wireless range is useful when players have multiple systems nearby, while the 1–24 online range is the largest explicitly stated race scale in the material available for this comparison.
How the formats differ in everyday play
Choose Motorfest’s structure when variety matters more than a fixed race loop
Motorfest makes sense for a player who wants to alternate between types of driving. You might prefer a road car one moment, a motorcycle the next, and an aircraft or boat after that. The Hawaiian setting and open-world design are intended to make the environment itself part of the activity, not merely a backdrop around a track.
- You want a festival setting and the freedom to travel around it.
- You value a very large advertised vehicle catalog.
- You are interested in several vehicle categories instead of kart racing alone.
- You have dependable internet access for play.
Choose Mario Kart World’s structure when races and social play come first
Mario Kart World is the more direct fit for players who want to select a mode, choose a character and compete on courses with familiar kart-racing goals. Grand Prix, Knockout Tour and Battle cover distinct types of sessions, and Free Roam offers an option outside standard races without turning the entire game into an open-world vehicle simulator.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You want recognizable kart racing and battle modes.
- You regularly play with three other people on one system.
- You want an officially stated online scale of up to 24 players.
- You prefer a course-and-mode structure to a broad vehicle festival.
Multiplayer: local groups, wireless play and large races
Why Mario Kart World is the safer local-multiplayer recommendation
Mario Kart World’s one-system support for up to four players is explicitly listed by Nintendo. That removes an important uncertainty for couch multiplayer: one Switch 2 can accommodate a group of four according to the product information. Nintendo also lists local wireless play for up to eight and online play for up to 24.
The version 1.8.0 update introduces a separate participant detail. Nintendo says a group can contain up to 26 participants, consisting of up to 24 drivers plus two spectators. This does not increase the race to 26 drivers. If you are planning an event, count 24 as the maximum number of racers and treat the two additional places as spectator slots.
What is and is not established for Motorfest multiplayer
The official material confirms that Motorfest requires an online connection and supports online multiplayer or features, but the source set does not establish a directly comparable maximum number of Switch 2 players in a race. Do not transfer Mario Kart World’s “24” figure to Motorfest, and do not claim that one game supports a larger online field unless a current platform listing gives that number.
Offline access and internet planning
The Crew Motorfest
Ubisoft’s Switch 2 release announcement says an online connection is required to play. If your primary use case is travel, a weak connection, or a location where the console cannot reliably go online, this requirement is a material disadvantage. It applies even if you are not specifically seeking a competitive online race.

Mario Kart World
Nintendo clearly documents online requirements for online features: internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online. However, the reviewed official pages do not establish that every mode is available offline or define the offline behavior of each activity. The responsible conclusion is narrower than “Mario Kart World is fully offline”: its online requirements are documented, but complete offline coverage is not established here. Check Nintendo’s current support information for the exact mode you plan to use.
Current content and the version 1.8.0 update
Mario Kart World is not limited to the launch configuration. Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 announcement describes two new Knockout Tour routes and SNES-inspired courses in certain modes. Because update contents can change, verify the live update page when you purchase or install the game; the version number and included courses may be superseded by a later release.
The same announcement explains the 26-person group limit: 24 drivers and up to two spectators. This distinction matters for tournament or party planning. It is a group-participant limit, not evidence of 26 racers appearing in one event.

Nintendo’s US Mario Kart World listing showed a regular price of $79.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026. That is a region-specific, time-sensitive price and may change, so confirm the live US listing before buying. The available source set does not establish a comparable current Motorfest price for the same edition and region; avoid treating Mario Kart World’s figure as a price comparison.
Both products discussed here are the Nintendo Switch 2 editions. A listing for another platform, edition or territory can have different terms, content or pricing.

Decision guide: which one should you buy?
Pick Mario Kart World if these statements describe you
- You want a traditional kart-racing identity rather than a general driving game.
- You need one-system multiplayer for up to four people.
- You want several distinct formats, including Grand Prix, Knockout Tour and Battle.
- You are interested in online races with an explicitly documented ceiling of 24 drivers.
- You prefer selecting a course or mode instead of roaming an open-world festival.
Pick The Crew Motorfest if these statements describe you
- You want an open-world festival setting in Hawaii.
- You value a vehicle catalog advertised by Nintendo as more than 700 entries.
- You want to switch among cars, bikes, planes, boats and other vehicle categories.
- You are comfortable with Ubisoft’s requirement for an online connection to play.
- You want exploration and vehicle variety to be as important as individual races.
If you are buying for a mixed household
Start with the type of session your group actually repeats. A family or friend group that sits around one Switch 2 and wants immediate races has a clear documented fit in Mario Kart World because Nintendo lists one-system play for four. A solo player who treats driving as exploration and wants many categories of vehicle may get more value from Motorfest’s open-world format, provided the required connection is available.
If your group alternates between local gatherings and online events, Mario Kart World’s published player ranges provide more concrete planning information. If your group is excited specifically by aircraft, boats, motorcycles or the scale of a festival world, Motorfest addresses that desire in a way a kart racer does not.
What the official information cannot tell you
Feature lists can establish formats, vehicle categories, release dates and stated player limits, but they cannot answer every quality question. The material available for this comparison does not provide controlled tests of frame rate, resolution, loading times, steering response, visual quality, battery use or network stability. It also does not provide independent review scores, sales figures or survey data showing which game players prefer.

Motorfest is the more appropriate choice for the open-world, multi-vehicle festival concept. Mario Kart World is the more appropriate choice for course-based kart racing, battle modes and clearly documented local and large-scale online play. Their designs target different reasons to race.
Final recommendation
Buy Mario Kart World when your priority is recognizable kart competition, multiple race and battle formats, or multiplayer on one Switch 2. Buy The Crew Motorfest when your priority is a Hawaiian open world and a very broad selection of vehicle types. Before choosing Motorfest, make sure the console will have the internet connection Ubisoft requires. Before assuming Mario Kart World will work without internet in a particular mode, verify that mode’s current Nintendo support information.
