The Cornell case is a civil lawsuit over alleged sexual assault at a fraternity house in October 2024. A complaint is not a court finding, and the reporting also describes a serious mistaken-identity incident: an unrelated man with the same name as a defendant was reportedly served with the lawsuit and targeted online. The “deranged social media mob” framing comes from a Reason opinion article, not a verified count of harassers or a legal finding.
What happened in the Cornell Chi Phi case?
A woman identified in court as Jane Doe filed a civil complaint in New York County on Sept. 16, 2026. The complaint names seven individual students, Cornell University, fraternity and sorority entities, and a bar operator as defendants. It concerns events the plaintiff says occurred at the Chi Phi house on Oct. 19–20, 2024.

The complaint alleges that Doe had consumed alcohol before arriving, was given alcohol and ketamine at the house, and experienced nonconsensual sexual acts. It asserts claims including sexual assault, negligence, and breach of contract, seeks damages, and demands a jury trial. Those are the plaintiff’s allegations; the complaint itself does not establish that they are true.
Why is the lawsuit drawing online attention?
Reason published Robby Soave’s opinion article, “The Cornell Rape Lawsuit Is Fueling a Deranged Social Media Mob,” on Oct. 1, 2026. Soave argues that people online have targeted the seven men named in the complaint as well as unrelated people. The headline’s characterization is an argument about online conduct, not a measured tally of participants or proof that every person discussing the case is harassing someone.

The New York Times reported on text messages that Reason says suggest Doe initially described the sexual encounters differently. Reason also says the messages do not definitively clear anyone and acknowledges that assault could have occurred. The Times report was not independently reviewed for this account, so its contents should be understood here as Reason’s description rather than independent verification of the messages. Messages described in a news article do not, on their own, settle what happened or resolve the lawsuit.
Was the wrong Matthew Ingalls served?
Yes, according to The Free Press: an unrelated 23-year-old active-duty Marine sergeant named Matthew Ingalls, whom the outlet says never attended Cornell, was mistakenly served with a 101-page lawsuit intended for another person of the same name. The report says his family’s home address appeared on the docket. It quotes his mother, Victoria Ingalls: “My family’s been terrorized, threatened, and harassed.” The reported error illustrates how an incorrect identity can expose an uninvolved person to harm; there is no reason to reproduce his address or other private contact information.

Were the Cornell students charged with a crime?
Reason reported on Oct. 1 that the seven men had not been charged with a crime as of that article’s publication. That is a time-specific statement, not a current docket update. Reason’s Sept. 29 commentary also attributed to Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten a statement that Doe’s November 2024 sworn statement described drug use and sexual contact as voluntary, conscious, and consensual, and reported that a new investigation had been opened. The underlying statement was not directly reviewed here; the reported account should not be treated as a determination of guilt, innocence, or what occurred.
