The Capricornian’s combined Home Buildings and Contents Plus is advertised with an extra 25% safety net above the building sum insured, up to two years of temporary accommodation and higher limits on selected inclusions. The Capricornian distributes the policy; Insurance Australia Limited issues it as CGU Insurance. The public information supports a review of features, but not a price or claims-satisfaction verdict.
Who issues The Capricornian home insurance?
The Capricornian distributes the home insurance under an agreement with Insurance Australia Limited, which issues the policy as CGU Insurance. The Capricornian’s product page describes the available cover; the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and your certificate set out the policy terms that apply to you.

What does Buildings and Contents Plus cover?
Plus combines cover for the insured home and its contents. The Capricornian says CGU can pay to repair or rebuild a home damaged by a covered event, up to the insured amount, and lists cover for events including fire (including bushfire), theft and vandalism, flood, rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami. These are subject to policy conditions, exclusions and excesses; the event list is not a guarantee that every loss involving those conditions is covered.
The product page also lists emergency repairs, temporary accommodation after a covered event, visitor belongings up to $2,500 and legal liability up to $20 million. The applicable liability cover geography differs depending on whether the relevant cover is for buildings or contents. Check the PDS and certificate for the full terms and limits.

How does Plus differ from Standard?
The Capricornian advertises three notable differences for Plus: an extra 25% above the building sum insured as a safety net if the home needs repair or rebuilding, up to two years of temporary accommodation, and higher limits on selected inclusions, including food spoilage and landscaping. Its page gives up to 12 months of temporary accommodation for the relevant Standard cover.
The 25% safety net is an additional benefit, not a guarantee that the sum insured will cover every rebuilding cost. Consider whether your building sum insured is adequate for your home and check the current PDS and certificate for how the benefit works, its conditions and any applicable limits.

CHOICE’s accessible review is for The Capricornian Home Buildings and Contents Standard, not Plus. It identifies that Standard policy as sum-insured cover and lists Standard-specific limits and event waiting periods. Those details should not be assumed to apply to Plus; use the current Plus PDS for its terms.

What optional cover is available?
The product page lists valuable contents and portable contents as options. Accidental damage and motor burnout are also listed as optional benefits where they are not already included in the selected tier; both are automatically included in Plus, according to the page.
Motor burnout cover is described as applying to motors up to 15 years old, provided they are not covered by warranty or used in a business. Portable contents cover has per-item and geographic limits and exclusions. Check the PDS and certificate for the exact scope, limits and conditions before relying on an option for a particular item.
What should you check before choosing Plus?
- Sums insured: Check that your building and contents sums insured suit your circumstances, and understand how the Plus safety net applies.
- Limits and excesses: Review the limits for the belongings and features that matter to you, along with event waiting periods, exclusions and excesses in the current Plus documents.
- Water-related events: Although the product page lists flood, rainwater run-off, storm, storm surge and tsunami, it says tides and waves—“actions of the sea”—are not covered. Do not treat the listed events as blanket cover for all coastal water damage.
- Optional items: Decide whether you need valuable contents or portable contents cover, and check their item, location and other limits.
- Premium and excess: Compare live quotes for your address using the same sums insured, excess and optional-cover settings.
- Claims and complaints: Consider the claims contact route and escalation process, as well as the policy terms.
How do you make a CGU home insurance claim?
The Capricornian directs home and contents claims to CGU at 13 24 80, with claims lodgement available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its claims and complaints page recommends contacting the insurer promptly and having relevant information ready.

If you are unhappy with a claim decision
The Capricornian outlines a three-step complaint route: first raise the issue with the claims consultant, then request review by Customer Resolution, and then consider external dispute resolution, including AFCA where appropriate. Follow the process and contact details on its current claims page.
Is The Capricornian home insurance Plus good value?
A value verdict is not established by the available public information: no current personalized premium is provided. CHOICE’s accessible review covers Standard and says its rating is for cover only because the insurer does not share its price data; most of its score and regional price-comparison fields are member-only. It is not a Plus-specific price assessment.
Best Value
To judge value for your situation, compare current quotes with the same address, sums insured, excess and optional-cover choices, then weigh the premium against the Plus benefits and the policy limits that matter to you. CHOICE’s Standard review can provide context about that tier, but it cannot establish Plus’s price or rating.
