Short answer: neither game is a universal performance winner. In DSOGaming’s historical tests, The Callisto Protocol could hold 60 fps more consistently than the Dead Space remake in some demanding, high-end 4K scenes, while both games suffered stutter and severe drops on slower or older hardware. The comparison is useful, but it is not a controlled 2026 ranking: the games were tested in different scenes, on different dates, with different drivers, and on different builds.
What the published comparison actually measured
The closest like-for-like evidence comes from two DSOGaming PC analyses. The Callisto Protocol test was published on December 5, 2022. The Dead Space remake test followed on January 30, 2023. Both used an Intel Core i9-9900K and 16GB of DDR4-3800 memory, and both tested several of the same graphics cards: Radeon RX 580, RX Vega 64, RX 6900 XT, GeForce GTX 980 Ti, RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 3080 and RTX 4090.

That overlap makes a cautious comparison possible, but the tests were not a laboratory head-to-head. They used different game versions, graphics drivers and test scenes. Callisto was measured with its built-in benchmark, which DSOGaming described as particularly taxing. Dead Space had no built-in benchmark, so the outlet used the prologue and called it a worst-case stress test. Less demanding Dead Space areas can run faster than the prologue results suggest.

Because the scenes and software conditions differ, a statement such as “Callisto is always faster” goes beyond the evidence. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Callisto’s tested high-end results looked better in some worst-case comparisons, but both games were demanding and neither result guarantees performance on a current PC.

How The Callisto Protocol performed
1080p and high-end graphics cards
With maximum settings at 1080p and ray tracing disabled, DSOGaming reported that the RTX 4090 was the only tested card delivering a constant 60 fps in the Callisto benchmark. The RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 3080 and RX 6900 XT generally produced high frame rates, but each dropped frames in two scenes. That distinction matters: a card can show a high average while still failing to maintain a fixed 60-fps target in the hardest moments.
The benchmark was more severe than ordinary play in many areas. DSOGaming said normal gameplay seemed better overall, although some scripted or demanding sequences could be similarly heavy. Therefore, the 1080p result should be read as a stress-case floor rather than a promise that every corridor will run below 60 fps.
1440p and native 4K
At 1440p and native 4K, DSOGaming said only the RTX 4090 produced smooth results in its Callisto test. The outlet did not establish a universal average-frame-rate figure for every other card at each resolution; the important finding was the loss of consistently smooth delivery as pixel count increased.
FSR 2 changed the outcome for some cards. In the tested build, enabling the upscaler allowed the RTX 3080 and RX 6900 XT to reach 60 fps in the outlet’s scenarios. That is a test-specific result, not a guarantee for every FSR mode, quality setting, driver or later patch. It does show why native-resolution results and upscaled results should never be mixed in one ranking.

DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and graphics APIs
Callisto’s API behavior varied by GPU generation. DSOGaming found that the GTX 980 Ti, RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 3080 ran faster with DirectX 11 in its test, while the RTX 4090 was significantly faster with DirectX 12. The AMD cards tested performed better in DirectX 12. These observations came from launch-period drivers and a specific game build, so they are not blanket advice that one API is always superior.
If you are troubleshooting Callisto on a current system, the useful lesson is to treat the API selector as a diagnostic option. Measure the same repeatable section with each available API, keep resolution and upscaling unchanged, and choose the version that produces steadier frame delivery on your hardware. Do not assume that an API result from a 2022 RTX 3080 applies unchanged to a modern driver.
Ray tracing and stutter
DSOGaming reported substantial CPU and GPU costs for ray tracing and recommended avoiding it in the tested build. Ray tracing therefore belongs in a separate comparison from maximum settings without RT; turning it on can change the performance class of a graphics card.
Recommended Free Tools
The analysis said shader-compilation stutters had been addressed, but it still observed hitches while exploring and during scripted events. In a simulated dual-core CPU test without Hyper-Threading, Callisto struggled; enabling Hyper-Threading brought that setup close to 60 fps at 1080p maximum non-RT settings. That is a historical experiment, not a minimum-CPU specification for current processors, but it demonstrates that frame-rate problems were not purely a GPU issue.

How the Dead Space remake performed
1080p maximum settings without ray tracing
In the prologue stress test, only half of DSOGaming’s tested GPUs delivered a constant 60 fps at 1080p maximum settings with ray tracing disabled. The RTX 2080 Ti did not run the sequence smoothly, and the GTX 980 Ti crashed. Because the prologue was deliberately selected as one of the heaviest sections, these results describe a difficult ceiling rather than the performance of every room aboard the Ishimura.
1440p maximum settings
At 1440p maximum settings without ray tracing, the RX 6900 XT, RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4090 were the smooth performers in the tested prologue. Other tested cards failed to maintain the same consistency. The RX 7900 XTX was tested with Radeon Adrenalin 23.1.2, while the other Radeon cards used 22.11.2, another reason not to treat the table as a perfectly controlled contest.
Native 4K
No GPU in DSOGaming’s Dead Space test maintained a constant 60 fps at native 4K maximum settings. Gameranx’s contemporaneous summary of the RTX 4090 comparison said Dead Space dipped as low as 50 fps in demanding 4K Ultra scenes while Callisto maintained 60 fps in its comparison. That is a secondary account of one high-end setup, not proof that Callisto always wins at 4K or that every Dead Space area drops to 50 fps.

DSOGaming measured a little over 8GB of VRAM at 1440p and more than 12GB at 4K in its tested Dead Space scenes. Those are observations from that build, settings and locations, not universal memory requirements. A card with less VRAM may still run the game, but it can face texture-streaming or frame-time problems that the cited test does not quantify.

The outlet distinguished Dead Space’s traversal stutters from shader-compilation stutters. Shader-related pauses appeared at first launch, while traversal hitches occurred at particular locations as the game streamed new areas. This is a different pattern from Callisto’s reported exploration and scripted-event hitches, even though the player experiences both as uneven frame delivery.
Callisto versus Dead Space by the question you actually care about
| Question | What the historical tests show | How to qualify it |
|---|---|---|
| Which is more likely to hold 60 fps at 1080p maximum, no RT? | Callisto’s RTX 4090 was the only constant-60 result in its benchmark; Dead Space had only half of tested GPUs at constant 60 in its prologue. | Different scenes and test dates prevent a universal ranking. |
| Which is harder at 1440p? | Callisto required an RTX 4090 for smooth native results in its test; Dead Space’s smooth prologue performers were RX 6900 XT, RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4090. | The games used different stress scenes, so “harder” is scene-dependent. |
| Which handles native 4K/60 better? | Callisto’s RTX 4090 was reported smooth; no tested Dead Space GPU held constant 60 fps at 4K maximum. | This is the clearest high-end advantage reported, but it is still historical. |
| Does upscaling help? | FSR 2 let the RTX 3080 and RX 6900 XT reach 60 fps in Callisto’s tests. | The cited Dead Space comparison does not provide a directly matched upscaling result. |
| Which stutters more? | Both stuttered, but the reported causes differed. | There is no population study or matched frame-time test establishing a winner. |
| Is ray tracing practical? | Callisto’s test found substantial CPU and GPU cost and advised avoiding RT in that build. | The evidence does not establish a current Dead Space-versus-Callisto RT ranking. |
Why stutter comparisons are easy to misread
“Stutter” is not one measurable problem. A first-launch shader compilation pause, a traversal hitch while a new area streams, and a scripted-event frame-time spike have different causes and may respond to different fixes.
- Callisto: shader-compilation stutters were said to be addressed, but exploration and scripted events could still hitch. CPU thread limits also mattered in the simulated dual-core test.
- Dead Space: the test described first-launch shader-compilation stutters and traversal stutters at specific locations.
- What is not known: the cited sources do not provide a population statistic showing what percentage of players experience either issue, nor do they offer a matched frame-time capture on the same patch and driver.
Consequently, a smoother average in one benchmark does not prove smoother traversal in the other game. If hitching is your priority, look for frame-time consistency in the exact areas you play rather than relying on a single average-FPS number.

Callisto was not frozen at its December 2022 state. Striking Distance Studios’ official notes record a PC update on December 2, 2022 that “Updated PSO cache to further reduce stuttering during gameplay.” The notes also list general performance optimizations in January 2023, continued performance optimizations in July 2023, and a July 2023 PC fix for a ray-tracing-related crash.
Best Value
Patch notes confirm that those changes shipped; they do not quantify the frame-rate or frame-time improvement on every graphics card. The DSOGaming numbers remain useful historical measurements, but launch reviews should not be presented as measurements of an unpatched 2026 installation. The supplied benchmark record does not establish a current 2026 retest for either game.
What the listed PC requirements do—and do not—tell you
Steam lists the following requirements for Callisto. They describe whether a configuration is within the storefront’s supported range, not the frame rate it will deliver.
| Callisto listing | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics card | GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580 | GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX 5700 |
| Memory | 8GB RAM | 16GB RAM |
| Storage | 75GB | 75GB |
| Storage type | Not stated as a minimum in the cited listing | SSD recommended |
Those requirements cannot be converted into a Dead Space comparison because the cited material does not provide an equivalent, matched Dead Space requirement table or a guaranteed target such as 60 fps. They also do not prove that adding an SSD will erase the relative performance gap; the benchmark evidence does not establish that outcome.
A practical way to choose between them on your PC
- Identify your target. Decide whether you need a locked 60 fps, are comfortable with a variable rate, or are targeting native 4K. The historical results show that the hardest scenes, not the headline average, determine whether a fixed target holds.
- Separate native and upscaled tests. For Callisto, compare native output with FSR 2 enabled as separate profiles. The cited test reached 60 fps on an RTX 3080 and RX 6900 XT with FSR 2, but that result should not be mixed with native-resolution figures.
- Keep ray tracing off while establishing a baseline. Callisto’s tested RT cost was substantial. First find a stable non-RT frame rate, then test RT independently if image quality matters more than consistency.
- Test the same repeatable route. In Callisto, repeat a demanding benchmark or scripted sequence. In Dead Space, include the prologue only as a stress case and then check ordinary traversal, because the prologue is explicitly unusually heavy.
- Watch frame-time behavior, not only the average. Note drops, traversal hitches and scripted-event pauses separately. A high average with frequent low-percentile spikes can feel worse than a lower but steady frame rate.
- Try the available graphics API when Callisto offers the choice. The historical API preference changed by GPU. Compare DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 on your own build rather than importing the 2022 result unchanged.
- Allow for patches and drivers. Record your game version and driver when comparing results. Callisto received documented optimizations after the benchmark, and the cited Dead Space test used a different driver set.
Verdict
If your only question is which game looked faster in the published high-end stress comparisons, Callisto has the stronger showing: its RTX 4090 result held 60 fps at native 4K in DSOGaming’s test, while no tested GPU held constant 60 fps in Dead Space’s 4K maximum-settings prologue. Callisto also benefited from FSR 2 on the RTX 3080 and RX 6900 XT in that analysis.
That advantage is conditional, not universal. Dead Space’s prologue was intentionally a worst-case scene, Callisto used a different benchmark, and both games exhibited stutter on their tested builds. The fairest 2026 buying or upgrade decision is therefore based on your GPU, resolution, ray-tracing preference and tolerance for traversal or scripted-event hitching—not on a single cross-game FPS claim.
