Start with the High preset at your monitor’s native resolution, turn ray tracing off, and test a representative gameplay area. If frame-rate consistency is still below your target, lower demanding options in small steps and try AMD FSR 2 in Quality mode before using a more aggressive setting. This is a practical baseline rather than a universal benchmark: your GPU, CPU, resolution and frame-rate target determine the final result.
What to change first
The most reliable way to tune The Callisto Protocol is to establish a quality-focused baseline, measure it in the areas where you actually play, and then change one variable at a time. Set the game to the High preset and your display’s native resolution. Disable ray tracing initially. High preserves the game’s lighting, materials and geometry better than immediately dropping to a low preset, while disabling ray tracing avoids a large and hardware-dependent rendering cost during the first pass.

Load a repeatable section of gameplay rather than judging performance from the title screen or a quiet corridor. Walk through a room with several light sources, combat effects and enemies, then repeat the same route after every change. Watch average frame rate and, more importantly, hitching or uneven frame delivery. A setting that raises the displayed number but introduces visible temporal artifacts may be a poor trade for your monitor and target.

Check requirements before tuning
Steam’s published requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or frame rate. They are also dated relative to current PC hardware and software. Confirm that the game is updated and that Windows, your graphics driver and available storage are in good condition before changing visual settings.

An SSD can reduce loading friction and asset-streaming delays, but it should not be presented as an automatic FPS or stutter cure. A 1 TB NVMe drive may be convenient for a larger game library, yet neither NVMe storage nor 1 TB capacity is a stated requirement for this game.
Recommended tuning sequence
1. Update and establish a baseline
- Install the latest game update available through your store client.
- Close overlays, recording tools and background applications that consume CPU, GPU or memory while you establish a baseline.
- Select the High preset, native display resolution and ray tracing Off.
- Play the same representative route for several minutes. Note frame-rate consistency, obvious hitches, image shimmer and any shader-compilation pauses.
Do not change several options at once. If you lower five settings together, you cannot tell which one solved a hitch or softened the image.

2. Lower expensive-looking options in small steps
If the baseline misses your target, reduce the options that visibly affect lighting, shadows, reflections or volumetric effects one step at a time. Keep the preset as a reference, but use individual controls when the game exposes them so you can preserve details that matter most to you. Re-run the same route after each change. The official material does not establish a universal ranking of these controls, so judge the result on your hardware rather than assuming a particular setting always costs the most.
3. Try AMD FSR 2 Quality
When native rendering remains below your target, test AMD FSR 2 in Quality mode before moving to a more aggressive mode. Quality is the least disruptive starting point because it gives the reconstruction process more source pixels than Balanced or Performance modes. Look for thin-wire shimmer, ghosting behind moving characters and loss of fine texture detail while comparing the same scene.
If Quality still cannot meet your target, move down one mode only after deciding that the softer image and temporal artifacts are acceptable. Upscaling can create performance headroom, but the game’s official information does not promise a fixed FPS gain for any FSR mode. Your result changes with resolution, GPU load, CPU limits and the selected frame-rate target.

4. Add ray tracing only after the non-RT target is stable
Ray tracing is available on PC when the system supports DirectX 12. It can improve selected lighting and reflection effects, but its cost is hardware- and scene-dependent. Enable it only after the non-ray-traced setup already meets your desired level of smoothness. Then compare the same route with ray tracing on and off, watching frame pacing as well as image quality. If combat becomes uneven or traversal hitches return, turn it off or reduce other quality settings to preserve consistency.

Does The Callisto Protocol support DLSS?
No. KRAFTON’s official PC support information states that the PC version does not support DLSS. Do not expect a native DLSS toggle in the graphics menu, and do not treat third-party injection tools as official support. The supported upscaling experiment documented for this setup is AMD FSR 2.
The same support information describes 30 FPS Fidelity and 60 FPS Performance modes for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Those are console modes, not PC settings, so they should not be used as evidence that an equivalent locked mode exists in the Windows version.

How to reduce stuttering
Allow shader work to finish
Some stutter comes from shader compilation or pipeline-state work rather than a single quality slider. The publisher’s patch history includes a December 6, 2022 entry adding shader compile dialogs and a December 2, 2022 PC patch note that says, “Updated PSO cache to further reduce stuttering during gameplay.” These changes show that post-launch optimization addressed compilation behavior, but they do not guarantee a hitch-free experience on every current system.
After an update, let any shader-compilation process complete before judging performance. If a first run is uneven, restart the game and repeat the same route once the cache has been built. Avoid clearing shader caches repeatedly unless you are troubleshooting corruption; doing so can force the expensive first-run work again.

- Test with the same resolution, route and frame-rate cap each time.
- Record whether a hitch occurs during traversal, combat, a lighting transition or a menu change.
- Check whether the GPU is fully loaded. A low GPU load with poor frame rate can point to a CPU, streaming or background-process limit rather than a texture-quality problem.
- Keep a stable cap that your system can hold instead of chasing a fluctuating peak.
Check storage and memory pressure
Keep at least the stated 75 GB available and prefer an SSD where possible, as Steam recommends one. An SSD is not a guaranteed performance fix, but a nearly full drive, heavy background paging or insufficient memory can make traversal and loading behavior less consistent. Systems near the 8 GB minimum have less room for the game and background processes than systems with the recommended 16 GB.

Separate game problems from system problems
Disable one overlay or monitoring hook at a time when diagnosing unexplained hitches. Verify the game installation through the store client if files may be damaged, then retest with the same graphics profile. If stutter appears only with ray tracing, return to the non-RT profile before investigating broader system causes.
Choosing a profile for your target
Image quality first
Use High at native resolution with ray tracing Off as the starting profile. Add FSR 2 Quality only if native rendering cannot hold the desired consistency. This approach keeps the original pixel detail until you have evidence that upscaling is necessary.
Balanced smoothness
Keep High where possible, lower individual demanding options in small increments, and use FSR 2 Quality. Leave ray tracing disabled unless your measured route still has comfortable headroom. This is the most practical choice for players who prefer stable frame delivery over optional lighting effects.

Performance first
Start from High, then reduce the options that affect your measured bottleneck, move to FSR 2 Balanced or a more performance-oriented mode only when Quality is insufficient, and consider lowering output resolution. Check the image at normal viewing distance after every change; a higher counter is not an improvement if motion clarity and detail become distracting.
What the patch history tells you
Striking Distance Studios and KRAFTON documented several PC-focused changes after launch: the PSO-cache update to further reduce gameplay stuttering, shader-compilation dialogs, an AMD lighting-performance change dated January 17, 2023, a Steam Deck rendering profile intended for smooth gameplay, and ray-tracing crash and performance work dated July 17, 2023. The Steam Deck note says the profile was created with “the best settings for smooth gameplay” for that device. These are historical improvements, not proof that every current Windows configuration behaves identically.
If the game is fully updated and still stutters, use the controlled sequence above rather than assuming a single old patch note applies to your hardware, resolution or current build.
