For most Windows users, 7-Zip is the best free WinRAR alternative for opening RAR files. It is free, open source, lightweight and supports RAR extraction, including from its command-line tools. Choose PeaZip instead when you need one archive manager across Windows, Linux, macOS or BSD, portable packages, support for more than 200 archive types, multi-volume handling and built-in security utilities. Neither program should be treated as a guarantee that an archive is safe: download the extractor from its official project, extract unfamiliar files into a separate folder and scan them before opening or running anything.
Which WinRAR alternative should you use?
The right choice depends mainly on your operating system and whether you only need to unpack RAR files or want a broader archive-management toolkit.

RAR is an archive format that can bundle many files into one container and compress them. RAR5 is a newer revision of the format. An extractor reads the archive metadata, reconstructs the compressed data and writes the original files to a destination folder. It does not need to create a new RAR archive to perform that job.

Many downloads are split into volumes. A set may contain names such as part1.rar, part2.rar or a first file ending in .rar followed by files such as .r00 and .r01. All volumes are required for a complete extraction. Start the operation by opening the first volume and keep every part in the same directory.
Password protection changes what the extractor can read, not whether the contents are trustworthy. An encrypted archive can prevent security software from inspecting files until you supply the password, and a password supplied by a stranger is not evidence that the archive is benign.
7-Zip: the best default for Windows
What it supports
The 7-Zip project describes the program as a free, open-source file archiver with a high compression ratio. Its format list places RAR under unpacking-only formats. In practical terms, 7-Zip is a strong choice for opening and extracting RAR files, but you should not describe it as a native RAR creator on the basis of that support.

The Windows graphical shell is intentionally simple: install the utility, right-click a RAR file and choose the 7-Zip commands, or open the archive and select an extraction destination. The same project also provides a command-line version, useful when you need consistent extraction in a script, build process or support runbook.
When 7-Zip is the better choice
- You use Windows and want a free utility focused on extraction rather than a large suite of archive-management features.
- You need to automate unpacking and want a command-line executable instead of GUI-only operation.
- You prefer open-source software and do not need a portable, cross-platform archive manager.
- You only need to open RAR files and create archives in another format when necessary.
Important limitation
RAR extraction and RAR creation are separate capabilities. A program can unpack a RAR archive without being licensed or designed to produce one. Use 7-Zip for extraction as documented by its project, and choose another format such as 7z or ZIP when you need to create an archive yourself unless you have a specific, properly licensed RAR creation tool.

PeaZip is free and open source. Its official site lists builds for Windows, Linux, macOS and BSD, and states that it opens and extracts both RAR and RAR5. The project documents support for more than 200 archive types, making it useful when your files arrive in several formats rather than only RAR.

PeaZip also documents multi-volume archive handling and portable packages. A portable build is useful on a shared or managed computer where you cannot install software, although you should still obtain it from the official project and follow the owner’s policies before running anything from removable media.
Security and file-management features
The project lists AES, Twofish and Serpent encryption, an encrypted password manager, optional two-factor authentication, secure deletion and hashing/checksum tools. These features address different jobs:
- Encryption: protects archives you create when the format and settings support it.
- Password manager: stores archive passwords in an encrypted vault rather than leaving them in plain text.
- Two-factor authentication: adds an additional control to the password-management feature where enabled; it does not make an incoming archive safe.
- Hashing and checksums: let you compare a file’s calculated digest with a trusted value to detect corruption or unexpected changes.
- Secure deletion: helps remove selected temporary or sensitive files, subject to the limits of your operating system, storage device and backups.
These tools reduce avoidable exposure and help verify files, but they are not an independent malware audit. A correctly hashed malicious file is still malicious, and an encrypted archive can still contain harmful programs.

How to open a RAR file safely
Step 1: obtain the extractor from the project
Use the official 7-Zip or PeaZip project page rather than a download mirror, repackaged installer or pop-up advertisement. Confirm the publisher shown by your operating system and, where the project supplies checksums or signatures, compare the downloaded file with those values. Do not install an “unlocker,” codec or browser extension offered by a page claiming that the archive cannot otherwise open.
Step 2: prepare a destination
Create a dedicated folder such as Downloads on Windows or an equivalent folder in your home directory on another system. Keeping extracted content separate makes it easier to inspect, scan and delete. For an archive from an unknown sender, use a disposable virtual machine or quarantine directory when your organization provides one.

Look for all parts before starting. A multi-volume archive cannot be reconstructed from only the first file. Keep the parts together, preserve their original names and avoid opening a later volume as though it were a complete archive.

Step 4: inspect before extracting
Open the archive in the utility and review its file list. Be cautious with executables, scripts, shortcut files, documents containing macros and files whose extensions are disguised with multiple dots. An archive that contains only photographs is not automatically safe, but a request to run an unexpected installer deserves particular scrutiny.
Step 5: extract to the dedicated folder
- Choose the archive’s first volume in the file manager.
- Use the extractor’s Extract command and select the dedicated destination, not a system folder.
- Enter the password only if you obtained it through a trusted channel.
- Wait for the completion message and read any CRC, checksum, missing-volume or permission error instead of opening partial output.
Step 6: scan the extracted files
Run your operating system’s security scanner or your organization’s approved endpoint scanner on the destination folder. Password-protected archives can conceal contents from scanners before extraction, so scan after the files are written. Keep potentially dangerous files unopened until the scan finishes and you have confirmed why you need them.
Step 7: open content with the least privilege necessary
Do not run an extracted program as administrator merely because it requests elevation. Open documents in protected or preview modes where available, disable macros unless they are required and verify the sender and expected file purpose. Delete the archive and extracted files when they are no longer needed, using secure-deletion tools only when they fit your storage and retention requirements.
Handling passwords, encryption and unknown senders
A password can protect confidentiality while an archive is stored or transferred, but it does not authenticate the sender. Confirm the password and the expected file through a separate channel. If a message says that security software will complain and instructs you to disable protection, treat that as a warning sign.
PeaZip’s documented encryption and password-management features are most useful when you create and manage your own archives. Select a long, unique password and share it separately from the archive. For highly sensitive data, document who should have access and where the recovery password is stored. Do not put the password in the same email or chat message as the archive unless your risk model explicitly allows it.
Hashing is an integrity check, not a verdict on intent. Compare a calculated checksum with a value published by a trusted distributor or supplied through an authenticated channel. If the values differ, stop and obtain a fresh copy rather than extracting repeatedly.

Multi-volume RAR troubleshooting
“Next volume is required” or “Unexpected end of archive”
Confirm that every volume is present in one folder and that no file was renamed. Start with the first volume. If one part is missing or damaged, the extractor cannot recreate the absent data unless the archive creator included recovery information and you have the required repair tool and parts.
CRC or checksum failure
A checksum error usually indicates corruption, an incomplete download or a damaged volume. Re-download the failing part, compare its size with the sender’s value and verify the archive checksum when one is available. Do not assume that files extracted before the error are complete.
Password rejected
Check capitalization, spaces and punctuation, and make sure you are using the password for this archive rather than a similarly named file. Ask the sender to confirm the password through a separate channel. Do not install a “password recovery” program from an untrusted site.
File names display incorrectly
Different systems may store names with different character encodings. Preserve the original archive and try the current release of the extractor on the operating system used to create it. Avoid renaming volumes while troubleshooting, because the sequence information may depend on the original names.
Extraction is blocked by permissions
Choose a folder you own, such as a directory under your user profile, instead of a protected system location. If the archive came from an organization, follow its policy before requesting elevated access. Elevation should solve a folder-permission problem, not be used to bypass a security warning.

Windows home user
Install 7-Zip when your main task is opening occasional RAR files with minimal overhead. Its context-menu integration and command-line version cover both manual and repeatable extraction. Choose PeaZip when you routinely switch among many archive formats or want portable and security-management features in the same application.
Linux user
PeaZip is the directly documented cross-platform option in this comparison, with Linux builds and RAR/RAR5 extraction. Use the package format appropriate for your distribution or a portable build from the official project, then apply your distribution’s update policy. Keep untrusted archives in a user-owned directory and scan extracted files with the security tools approved for your environment.
macOS or BSD user
PeaZip’s project site lists macOS and BSD support, so it is the clearest choice from these two tools when you need a documented build on either platform. Confirm that the current package supports your system version before installation, because operating-system compatibility changes over time.
Technician or automation workflow
Use 7-Zip’s command-line version when a Windows script must extract archives consistently. In a production workflow, validate the exit status, log the destination, retain the original archive until verification succeeds and reject missing-volume or checksum errors. Never pass passwords in a world-readable command line or commit them to source control; use the secret-handling method approved by your environment.

Can these alternatives create RAR files?
Opening a RAR archive and producing a RAR archive are different requirements. The 7-Zip project’s format list identifies RAR as unpacking-only, so its documented role here is extraction. PeaZip’s published capability is opening and extracting RAR and RAR5, along with many other formats; that statement does not establish native RAR creation.
If you control the archive format, create a 7z or ZIP archive with the utility that supports your recipient’s devices and security requirements. If a business process specifically requires a native RAR file, use a tool and license that explicitly support RAR creation and verify the terms and current compatibility from its publisher.
