That does not mean Microsoft makes no good tools. It means useful capabilities are scattered between Windows itself, Microsoft’s optional PowerToys bundle and independent open-source projects. You gain flexibility, but you also inherit installation, update and compatibility decisions that an operating system should handle more gracefully.

Windows’ real feature problem is fragmentation
Microsoft’s core Windows experience covers basic window snapping, screenshots, search and sound controls. The gaps appear when a workflow needs more than the simplest case. Arranging several windows, launching commands, transforming pasted text, recording a scrolling webpage or changing the volume of one application all require extra steps or separate software.

Microsoft describes it as “a set of free, open-source utilities designed to help power users and developers get more out of Windows,” while its product page invites users to “Make Windows work the way you do.” It is an official Microsoft project, but it remains an optional download rather than part of one default Windows installation.

That model has advantages: small teams can ship experiments quickly, and communities can improve focused tools without waiting for a Windows release. The cost is that users must discover, install, trust and maintain a collection of add-ons for capabilities that often feel fundamental.
PowerToys is the broadest first installation
What it adds
PowerToys bundles more than 30 free, open-source utilities. The current catalog includes Advanced Paste, Always On Top, Awake, Color Picker, Command Palette, Crop And Lock, Environment Variables, FancyZones and Keyboard Manager, among many others.

- Command Palette: provides a searchable launcher for commands and actions.
- Advanced Paste: transforms clipboard content instead of pasting it unchanged.
- Keyboard Manager: remaps keys and shortcuts for a workflow-specific layout.
- Always On Top and Awake: keep chosen windows visible or prevent the PC from sleeping when a task requires it.
The project page reported more than 135,000 GitHub stars and over 400 contributors, rounded down from GitHub figures in September 2026. Those numbers show sustained community interest, not a guarantee that every utility is equally mature.
Installation and compatibility
Microsoft lists three installation routes: the Microsoft Store, WinGet and GitHub. PowerToys supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 and Arm64 PCs.

- Choose the Microsoft Store for the simplest guided installation, WinGet if you manage software from a terminal, or GitHub when you need to inspect releases directly.
- Open PowerToys Settings after installation and enable only the utilities you need.
- Review each utility’s startup and keyboard-shortcut settings so new behavior does not conflict with existing applications.
- Keep PowerToys updated through the same channel you used to install it.
PowerToys complements Windows rather than replacing it. If Microsoft later folds a similar feature into Windows, you may need to choose between the built-in version and the PowerToys implementation.
ShareX turns screenshots into a workflow
Windows’ built-in Snipping Tool is convenient for a quick capture. ShareX is aimed at the longer chain of work that follows. Its official description covers full-screen, region, active-window, scrolling-page and monitor capture, along with screen recording, file sharing and automated after-capture tasks.
That distinction matters when a screenshot must be annotated, renamed, uploaded, copied to another service or processed repeatedly. ShareX describes itself as a free, open-source screenshot tool for Windows and reports more than 33 million downloads worldwide, a figure displayed on its site in 2026.
When it complements the default tool
- Use Snipping Tool for a one-off region capture with minimal setup.
- Use ShareX when you need scrolling-page capture, recording or repeatable after-capture actions.
- Keep the two available if different people or projects require different levels of automation.
Because ShareX can upload or share files, its destinations and automation rules deserve the same scrutiny as any other software that handles screenshots. Open-source availability improves transparency, but it does not remove the need to review where captures are sent.

EarTrumpet fixes per-application audio control
Windows can expose output devices and volume controls, but changing the level of individual applications is not always a quick, obvious operation. EarTrumpet focuses on that missing layer. Its official site describes it as a free, open-source volume-control app for Windows.
It is useful when a video call, game, browser tab and music player need different levels at the same time. The project lists the Microsoft Store, Chocolatey and GitHub Releases as distribution channels, giving users a choice between a guided store install, package management and direct release downloads.
EarTrumpet is a focused complement, not a replacement for Windows’ entire sound system. The narrower scope can be an advantage: there are fewer settings to learn and fewer unrelated background features to maintain.
Everything addresses filename-search frustration
Windows Search is designed to cover applications, settings, documents and other content, but that breadth can make a simple filename lookup feel slow or inaccurate. Windows Central’s September 17, 2025 comparison characterizes Everything as a utility that indexes file and folder names and returns results almost instantly.

That “almost instantly” wording is Windows Central’s description, not an independent benchmark. The practical distinction is scope: Everything is optimized for names and paths, while Windows Search attempts a broader information index. If you know part of a filename and need a direct result, a specialized index can be more predictable.

What users pay for the convenience
Discovery and trust
There is no single Windows screen that explains which utility solves which limitation. Users have to identify a project, verify that it supports their Windows edition and processor architecture, and decide whether its permissions and update process are acceptable.
More background software
Utilities that monitor hotkeys, index files or manage audio can add startup items and background activity. No common memory or CPU cost is published for these utilities, so performance impact should be evaluated on the individual machine rather than assumed from the label “lightweight.”

Microsoft can add a built-in replacement at any time. That is good for Windows but creates a maintenance decision: keep the add-on for deeper controls, disable it to reduce duplication, or migrate settings to the new default.
Different support boundaries
PowerToys clearly states Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004-or-later support for x64 and Arm64 PCs. Other utilities may publish different requirements, so compatibility should be checked before deployment on managed or older systems.
A sensible setup order
- Start with the problem, not the catalog. Install PowerToys if you need several improvements; choose ShareX, EarTrumpet or Everything when one workflow is the priority.
- Use a reputable distribution route. Prefer the Microsoft Store or WinGet for PowerToys, and use the official channels identified by each project.
- Enable selectively. Turn on only the utilities, startup behavior and shortcuts that solve a current problem.
- Test conflicts. Check keyboard shortcuts, window behavior, audio devices and search results before rolling the setup to other PCs.
- Review twice a year. Remove tools that duplicate a Windows feature, confirm update status and inspect any sharing or indexing settings.
What Microsoft should make standard
The clearest candidates are not obscure enthusiast tricks. Custom window layouts, reliable filename lookup, per-app volume control and a capture workflow that includes scrolling pages and automation are ordinary productivity needs. They belong in Windows’ first-run experience or in tightly integrated components, with consistent settings and update support.
Microsoft’s optional ecosystem demonstrates that the company understands these needs. PowerToys proves Microsoft can deliver open-source utilities quickly; independent projects prove that focused tools can solve narrow problems elegantly. The weakness is the handoff: users must assemble the experience themselves.
The practical verdict
Install PowerToys first if you want a broad set of improvements and your PC meets its stated requirements. Add ShareX for advanced capture, EarTrumpet for per-app audio and Everything when filename lookup matters more than a universal search index. These tools make Windows substantially more capable, but their necessity is also a product critique: the best version of everyday Windows work is still something users have to build.
