If you use hearing aids, a compatible TV streamer may route sound to them. Persistent difficulty—especially in conversations too—can be a reason to arrange a hearing assessment, not proof that the TV or your hearing is at fault.
Why TV dialogue can be hard to follow
Speech can become difficult to pick out when it competes with music, sound effects, room noise, or other voices. Hearing changes can also make speech—particularly speech in background noise—harder to understand. Needing to raise the TV until others complain and struggling to follow conversation in noisy places are among the signs the National Institute on Aging says may warrant attention; neither sign alone diagnoses hearing loss. NIA’s signs of hearing loss include further guidance.

Listening effort can be tiring. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) advises using captions for TV and recommends reducing background noise in communication settings. ASHA’s communication guidance puts it simply: “Turn on captioning when watching TV or talking over video platforms such as Zoom.”
Try these no-cost changes first
- Turn on captions. Check both the television’s accessibility or caption settings and the streaming app’s playback controls; captions may be controlled in either place. Closed captions can show dialogue and relevant sounds. If available, adjust their size, style, or position for readability.
- Check the audio options. In the TV’s audio or sound settings, look for terms such as dialogue, voice, clear speech, or speech enhancement. Streaming apps may also offer audio options. Names and availability vary by device and service, so consult the menus and manual for the equipment you actually use.
- Lower competing noise. Pause other audio, close a noisy window, or move away from a fan or appliance when practical. This costs nothing and may make speech easier to distinguish without raising the TV volume.
Captions are not always available or usable for every program. If they are missing, inaccurate, delayed, incomplete, or cover important content, HLAA provides guidance on reporting a TV captioning problem. Its captioning guide explains caption access and formats.

Compare the options before buying anything
| Option | What to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Captions | Whether the program has them; readability, accuracy, timing, and any available styling or repositioning. | Captions can be absent, inaccurate, delayed, incomplete, or obstructive. |
| Built-in dialogue enhancement | Whether your TV or streaming app has the feature and whether you like its effect. | It may alter music or sound effects in ways you do not prefer. Availability and results vary by model and service. |
| Soundbar with dialogue controls | Dialogue features, compatibility with your TV connections, and setup requirements. | It changes the sound heard in the room, which may not suit everyone sharing the TV. No particular model or performance ranking is established here. |
| TV streamer for hearing aids | Compatibility with the exact TV and hearing-device models, separate volume control, whether room sound remains audible, and pairing ease. | Compatibility and benefit are not universal; confirm the setup with the device maker or your hearing-care professional. |
| Hearing care | Access to a qualified evaluation and individualized support. | It is an assessment and care pathway, not a TV setting or a device purchase. |
When a soundbar or dialogue setting is worth checking
Some TVs and soundbars include features intended to make speech easier to distinguish. The Hearing Loss Association of America’s Spring 2024 Hearing Life magazine notes that smart TVs may provide some dialogue enhancement through adjustable audio settings or accessories such as soundbars. That is a general observation, not a promise that a particular model has the feature or that every viewer will like its effect. HLAA’s Spring 2024 issue also describes Amazon Prime Video’s Dialogue Boost, introduced in spring 2023; availability and controls can change, so check the current app.
A soundbar is most relevant when you want to change the sound for everyone in the room. Before buying, verify its speech or dialogue controls and how it connects to your TV. No product-to-product test establishes a universally best setting or soundbar.

How TV streamers work with hearing aids
A TV audio streamer can send television audio to compatible hearing aids, either directly or through an intermediary. The connection depends on the hearing devices and TV setup. Ask the hearing-care professional who supports your aids, or check the manufacturers’ compatibility guidance, before choosing a streamer. Cleveland Clinic’s overview of hearing assistive technology describes TV streaming devices.
Streaming is not guaranteed to improve understanding in every listening situation. A 2024 study abstract in the American Journal of Audiology reported improved performance in noise when hearing-aid microphones were muted, but no benefit from TV streaming in quiet; the sample was 20 experienced hearing-aid users. That limited result should not be generalized to every listener or setup. The journal issue is the source for the study abstract.

If difficulty continues across programs or also affects ordinary conversation—especially when there is background noise—consider asking a qualified hearing-care professional about an evaluation. The NIA lists needing to turn up the TV so others complain and trouble understanding speech in noise among possible signs of hearing loss. Those clues can justify attention, but they do not establish a diagnosis. Its infographic, last updated June 5, 2025, says about one-third of older adults have hearing loss; that population figure is not the share of TV viewers who struggle with dialogue. NIA’s page provides the signs and infographic.

Over-the-counter hearing aids are intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss, according to HLAA. They may not help when other symptoms or medical concerns are present, so a TV-volume complaint alone is not a sound basis for choosing one. See HLAA’s OTC hearing aid tip sheet for its guidance.
